ARCANE + PARALLELS
After Conner finds out about where the other half of his DNA came from, once he knows that Superman might actually find a valid way to hate him one day, it would have been easy for Lex to slip into the shadows and leave the secrets Conner learned to torment him.
He doesnât.
Instead he starts to visit. He texts Conner and asks if he would like to go to a diner after school. He calls Conner to ask how his dayâs going. He smiles when Conner tells him that he taught Wolf a new trick.
If Conner didnât know better, he might think that Lex was trying to parent him.
He assumes that Cadmus must have gotten something wrong. He guesses that he misunderstood what it meant when they put the thought that âparents look out for you and give you advice and forgive you when you yell at themâ because if he didnât then-
Then Lex Luthor would be a significantly better dad than Superman. Which wouldnât make sense. At all.
~
After about a month of visits and kind words and pats on the shoulder that make Conner feel embarrassed but so full of happiness he might burst, he decides to confess to the team. Partly because he hates lying to them more than anything in the world. Partly because he knows this is wrong and he knows that he has to stop before he says something he shouldnât and screws everything up but if heâs ever going to stop he needs someone to tell him he has to.
So he confesses. And very pointedly doesnât look at anyone as he waits for them to start yelling.
âBut-â starts Artemis, soft in a way Connerâs never associated with her before, âbut youâve been happier.â
He finally looks up and instead of angry they just look sad and understanding and Conner loves all of them so much.
âConner,â Kaldur says, calm and measured, âIf Lex Luthor is your blood, and you want to get to know him, I donât think that any of us would feel comfortable taking that away from you.â
Wally steps forward like he wants to reach out. âWe all have adults we can talk to about all of this, itâs not fair that you donât. We wonât tell on you man.â
Conner squeezes his eyes shut because if he keeps looking at all their earnest faces he might start crying.
âIâd never-â he struggles to get the words out, âIâd never choose him over any of you. I like him and sometimes he feels important to me in a weird way. But heâs nothing compared to you guys.â
âWe know.â Mâgann says.
âWe knowâ, they all say with their trust and their kindness and all the ways theyâve tried to make him feel at home since they came together.
Before he can leave to calm down somewhere with fewer people and more things to break heâs swamped by a tangle of limbs and reassurance and forgets why he wanted to leave anyway.
He really does have the best family.

Yâknow that morality thing where youâre a doctor with five dying patients and one healthy one and youâve got to decide whether you harvest the healthy guyâs organs or let the five people die? The fact that Hilbert is the guy that would harvest the healthy personâs organs is a summary of everything thatâs wrong with his sense of morality thank you for coming to my ted talk.

man i love friday
Dan Powell is seven years old and if heâs certain of one thing itâs that he loves stories.
Not quite the same way as Mark. Mark prefers his words drenched in the mud and grit of the reality he thinks is true.
âDoesnât it make the stories taste bad?â Dan asks, âDoesnât it make them grind against your teeth and cut against your tongue?â
Mark just laughs. âI can stomach it. Itâs way cooler than all that unreality fluff you like.â
Dan laughs but inside heâs frowning. The stories he likes are real. Itâs just that what he counts as reality and what Mark does must be very different things.
Dan likes stories about odd things. He likes stories about monsters and cults and old, old gods. He likes weird. The stories donât have to have a hero either, Dan is perfectly happy without a happy ending, just so long as there is an ending. When Dan starts a story leaving it unfinished has never been an option. When his parents read him bedtime stories, always a chapter at a time, he picks the book up once they leave and gets through as much as possible before passing out with the book falling wide open over his face.
Dan like stories and he likes endings and he likes weird. So when he overhears some people on the subway talking about the Visser Building and the odd happenings within, he can hardly not go searching for the endings of that tale.
The next day he walks down seedier streets than any seven year old should really be walking down to get to the Visser Building. He wonders if itâs odd that he didnât need to look at any maps before coming here. Itâs probably normal, he decides, Iâm just good at finding odd things.
Dan is good at finding all the stories at the school library that probably shouldnât be available to children as young as him and no one finds that strange. This is just more of the same.
As he walks into the Visser Building an overwhelming feeling of rightness comes over Dan. This is where youâre meant to be, it whispers, stay here forever and all will be right, right, right, it sings. Dan thinks the whispers make a very good point but he has to be home for dinner otherwise his parents will worry. So he wonât stay. This time.
He walks through the corridors. Some of them feel like mazes. Some of them tilt downwards so harshly that they feel like slides. All of them are new and interesting and definitely full of stories. Dan turns on the tape recorder he stole from his Dad. Mark is always going on about how a journalist needs a good record of everything that happens and this feels like the sort of story Dan is going to need to replay to fully understand.
âThis is Dan Powell recording.â he says into it, trying to sound as serious and adult as he can. There isnât really anything else for him to say after that since all the things heâs feeling are too new and unexplainable to put words to so he just lets the tape recorder go. The whirring of it is nice background noise and Dan likes the way the machine feels in his hand. Almost as if itâs a part of his hand.
Something about that thought may be significant, but before Dan can examine it too thoroughly heâs rounding a corner and face to face with a woman about to knock on a door and holding a tape recorder just like his own.
She looks surprised to see Dan. As if Dan isnât meant to be there. Dan thinks this is a bit unfair as the womanâs presence doesnât sing to him like the rest of the building does so she definitely isnât meant to be there. She looks like sheâs nice though and she hasnât shouted at Dan for trespassing yet so Dan doesnât say that. He just stands there, listening attentively to the twin whirring of two tape recorders.
âHello,â the woman says after a moment, cautious. âIâm Melody Pendras, do you live here?â
âNo. Iâm Dan Powell.â Dan holds his hand out for Melody to shake since heâs sure thatâs what heâs meant to do. Melody smiles as if this is a little funny but bends down and shakes Danâs hand seriously enough that he forgives her.
âThen why are you here?â
Dan frowns. âThe same reason as you.â He gestures towards her tape recorder. âI want to know the story.â
Melody starts frowning as well. âThatâs a very dangerous thing to want.â she says.
âI know. Itâs okay though. Getting to the end is worth it.â
Dan feels Melody re-evaluate her opinion of him. He feels the way her eyes land on him shift until itâs a lot more like how she looks at the rest of this strange, strange building. âI think you would fit in here very well.â
Dan nods in agreement. âThanks. You wouldnât.â
Melody laughs lightly. âI hope youâll forgive me for finding that to be a good thing.â Dan shrugs. Itâs not a good thing. Itâs not a bad thing. It just is. âI need to get back to work but it was nice to meet you, Dan.â
âIt was nice to meet you too, Melody. I hope your story doesnât end badly.â
Melody looks at Dan very oddly but before she can say anything the door she had been stood in front of swings open and she becomes too caught up in greeting the occupant to notice Dan fading back into the shadows of the Visser Building.
~
Dan ends up having to leave to get home for dinner before finding anything else important. Then he has a playdate with Mark the next day. Then he goes to his schoolâs very small creative writing club the day after that. Then thereâs a disciplinary meeting between his parents and his teacher about the somewhat disturbing story he wrote and Dan gets grounded for the rest of the week.
When Dan finally gets a chance to return to the Visser Building all thatâs left is rubble and the odd blood splatter and something else.
The something else is calling to him. The whirring, crackling, spinning of a tape recorder with nothing left to record is loud in his ears despite the fact he know no one else can hear it. His hands are too small and his body too weak to lift the rubble but he aches to do so.
âYou lost, kid?â a voice asks from behind Dan. He turns to see a woman who definitely doesnât care if Dan is lost or not.
âNo.â Dan pauses so that he doesnât sound too demanding or rude. Then, âCan I have the tapes?â
The womanâs eyes narrow and Dan is struck by how unlike Melody she looks. Melody had a kind face, all arranged in the most welcoming shape. The whole time this woman has been looking at Dan sheâs kept her face twisted into something mildly disgusted.
âWhat tapes are these?â
Dan points to the rubble. âThe ones in there. They have a story on them, I need to know how it ends.â
âHuh.â the woman says, looking at Dan like an artefact in a museum. âIf you were a little older I would know a lot of people who would be interested in employing you.â She tilts her head to the side as if considering Dan. âDo you like cities?â
Dan hasnât thought on it much before but the concept of living anywhere less full of stories than New York kind of makes him want to tear his skin off. âYes.â
The womanâs eyes gleam with interest. âDo you have friends?â
Dan thinks to how Mark can make him laugh hard enough to snort milk out his nose and yesterday he fixed the plaster on Markâs knee just right when the school nurse did it wrong. âYes.â
The interest in the womanâs eyes dulls a little. âA pity. Still, far more useful than most people will ever be.â She reaches into a pocket and pulls out a card with the letters LMG on it and a phone number. âMy name is Iris Vos. Once youâre old enough to be useful, maybe get a degree or something, call this number and tell them that I sent you.â She turns away from Dan a little. âThat should give me some credit with the bastards.â she mutters to herself.
Dan looks down at the card. Itâs in pristine condition, just like he supposes everything of Miss Vosâs must be. The numbers have an odd shine to them though and Dan finds himself wondering if there might be something interesting there. âThank you for the opportunity.â he says, because heâs certain that someone said that after receiving a job offer in one of the TV shows his dad watches. Miss Vos nods so Dan guesses he probably said the right words and she walks off towards people in suits holding official looking clipboards.
Dan wants to know how this story ends. He needs to know how this story ends. The curiosity burns in his stomach like acid and fire and hatred and wonder and Dan isnât sure how many years he can last before it finds a way to destroy him. Heâs always loved endings after all, perhaps a little too much.
So Dan tucks the card very carefully into his pocket and spends a moment hoping fervently that one day heâll be old enough to be useful.

Talia is making dinner with Selina when the Sirens burst in.
Selina had said that something like this would happen one day but this is the first time Talia has met them during her and Selinaâs relationship.
âGuess what we-â Harley Quinn crows before stopping abruptly at the sight of Talia in the kitchen and Damian at the table. âWhoâre you?â
Pamela Isley rolls her eyes before stepping forwards and holding out a hand. âSelinaâs been telling us all about her new paramour, itâs a pleasure to meet you.â she says. Talia raises an eyebrow but shakes the hand. She supposes that if Selina likes these people so much she can stomach being polite.
Harley, who had been looking Talia up and down from behind Pamela, steps forward and thrusts her hand out for Talia to shake as well. âHarley Quinn, pleasure to meet ya. And Iâve got to say you are a real improvement on the last guy Cat dated. Like really. Wowza.â Pamela elbows Harley in the ribs but she just responds by kissing her on the cheek. Talia raises an eyebrow at Selina who nods that yes, theyâre always like this. Harley turns towards the kitchen table where Damian has turned away from his laptop and is looking at the group of them with undisguised judgement. âAnd is this your little one?â
âYes.â Talia answers. She shoots a look at Damian since she can sense that heâs about three seconds from starting a fight. âHe is.â
Harley leans down so that her face is level with Damianâs. âIsnât he a cutie?â
âContinue to disrespect me and I shall remove your head from your shoulders, Quinnâ
âAnd heâs got spunk!â she praises, her lack of fear just making Damian scowl harder. âWhoâs the Daddy?â she asks, turning back to Talia.
âMy ex.â Talia and Selina answer in unison.
Pamela looks up at the two of them sharply from where she had been inspecting the food and thereâs a hint of confusion on Harleyâs face for the first time in the whole conversation.
Talia knows itâs undignified, but she canât help herself from a moment of sharp laughter. She might have been embarrassed over it if not for the way Selina giggles into her shoulder afterwards.
I love this entire sequence so much, WFA Bruce is everything to me. His children are always his number one priority in this series no matter what. He immediately forgot about Scarecrow to go make sure Tim was okay and give his breather to him.
