OOO fun!
Planet Deslotair is a sci-fi western story I've been working on. It takes place on a mostly desert planet, covered in craters with nearly never-ending storms raging in the upper atmosphere. The craters crack the ground open to bring forth vitrel, a liquid power source that nearly everything on Deslotair runs on. The storms, meanwhile, make the planet a treacherous place to travel to and from, and many ships crash instead of successfully making the journey.
Scavengers, those who visit the ships and pick apart their corpses, provide a valuable service as they fight over the remains.
The story follows four main characters:
There's Sprocket, an ex-mining robot and mechanic who leads them. Glass, a glass bot that left eir cult-like upbringing to wander the sands. Desmona, a teenage girl caught in a vitrel harvesting accident that left her filled with wild, uncontrollable energy. And Alonze, an ex-bandit who just got out of jail, and is Sprocket's ex. (Kinda. It's complicated.)
It's very found family, just following the adventures of this group as they try to work together and protect each other. Very heavy lean into western aesthetics while bringing in a lot of sci fi. Sort of retro futurism at times? Asks a lot of questions about robots and outcasts and what it really means to be human.
I've been reworking the plot a bunch lately, so it's hard to say much more, but I have a lot of worldbuilding and character development on my hands!
ALRIGHT
I want to talk about my podcast, but my brain's being a bit rude today.
So we're going to a project share, to anyone who sees this feel free to participate.
This share can be about ANY projects, fanfic, fanart, or original that you want to just yap yap yap about.
Here's how it works: You reblog the post and talk about your project you're working on/thinking about/want to do/etc...
Then, you go up the reblog chain and find a project you're interested, and SEND ASKS to the person who made the info about the project!
I'll start: I'm writing a podcast, and it's about Glacie, and their coworkers, who work at the Meeting Point. The Meeting Point is a restaurant/shop located near the Mad Forest. Coming back from a pretty long break, due to their own unreality problems popping up, Glacie is warned that the forest grows hungry. After some incidents, Glacie's hallucinations start getting real bad, and they eventually venture forth into the Mad Forest.
Oh my gosh, I love this so much!!!! Glass's concept and design is one of my favorites, so it's so cool to see how other people draw em! You did such a good job and I love the sandy background! Soooo very fitting.
Thank you!
Drew this for my friend @duck-in-the-universe birthday
This is eir character Glass, from eir story
Emanuel Rye is the sheriff of Raven's Rock. He listens to the wind like it has something to say, and he'll fix his town or die trying.
Emanuel made a deal with the devil and is now a little bit haunted, and occasionally very much possessed. He has three weird little cats that he loves very much, and is happily married to Jeremiah Stonewell.
A kind, deeply protective man, Emanuel is largely liked by the citizens of the town, despite the myriad of rumors that surround him and his abilities. Whereas some are content to appreciate what he's done for them and turn a blind eye, others can't just ignore the things they might have seen.
"This is the land of the glass bots. We abandoned them, abandoned their lands, and instead of staying dead like they should have, they turned into walking memories."
And now, finally, Glass (ey/em), linguist, translator, and traveler of the desert.
Info:
First to join the group, joined Sprocket a while ago.
It was just the two of them for a very long time
Glass' main role on the team is as a protector (ey wields that spear well) and as a navigator
Before Sprocket, ey was a translator
Glass lived with other glass bots, and worked closely with their king
When humans needed to interact with the glass bots for any reason, Glass would act as a translator
Because Glass people speak in frequencies humans can't always hear and cannot learn to speak any other language, Glass learned sign language, which ey still uses to communicate now
Ey also became a kind of negotiator, learning how to translate what the King had to say into mannerisms and politeness that the humans would view favorably, and vice-versa
This regular involvement with humans grew Glass's fascination with human culture and languages, something not necessarily appreciated in the glass bot world
Of course it was Glass's job to understand these things, and ey was respected given eir high-ranking position, but ostracized as well
Eventually, this fascination with the outside world, resentment in eir own community, and disagreement with the King's rule drove Glass to leave and strike out on eir own
Soon after, ey met Sprocket, who offered em a job
Out of the group, those two are probably still the closest
They had a lot of time out in the desert to grow this bond, learning about each other, about each other's worlds
Glass is a very curious person, and often has many questions
Ey is very passionate about languages, and always eager to learn more, as well as teach people
Glass is an excellent teacher as well, eir patience makes em well-suited for it
Once Desmona joins the team and they have an actual human mouth to feed, ey also discovers a love of cooking!
Normalize writing fanfiction about your own original fiction
"She's a walking fucking warning is what she is. Something you can tell your kids about so they don't go fucking with the transport vehicles, so they stay away from the facilities. I mean, she should have died, but I guess this makes a better story, huh?"
Desmona (she/her), the outcast turning to the desert to survive.
Info:
Was the third to join the group, initially it was just her, Sprocket, and Glass
Used to live in a mining town where they were drilling the liquid, magical energy substance that sits mostly under the surface of the planet
During an accident where one of the vehicles transporting this substance crashed, spilling out its contents, Desmona came in contact with a high amount of it
Instead of killing her, as it most certainly should have, it became a part of her
The energy is wild, impossible to control. It bursts out of her randomly and destructively, and she was driven out of her town as a result
Sprocket and Glass found her not long after
Glass is immune to the magical energy she can't help but wield, and Sprocket is somewhat resistant towards it
She latched onto them quickly because of that, glad to be around people she couldn't hurt
Sprocket and Glass eventually made the armor that can help contain the magic
Desmona is fairly withdrawn, especially around new people
When the group needs to travel into towns, she usually keeps to herself
She knows her mask makes her look somewhat strange and off-putting, and she's VERY happy to lean into that
She's very sweet though, despite all that
She gets along well with both Sprocket and Glass, but she's especially close to Glass
Since Glass is very curious about humans and different cultures and food and languages, Desmona is happy to teach em what she knows. She picks up on sign language pretty fast so they can talk without having to go through Sprocket.
They do a lot of cooking together
She also learns how to wield a spear from Glass
Desmona is very much a pacifist, but she knows it's important to protect herself, and it feels good to be able to do that in a way she can control
She doesn't want to hurt anyone, and hates the fact that now it feels like some kind of default state for her
I think it's funny when robots in fiction are just,,, super old and they outlive multiple generations of humans and are kinda treated as functionally immortal but irl tech is like "Your car is 20 years old???" or "I get a new smart phone every two years!"
Lemme see old ass bots who are mocked for being all ancient and outmoded and then when someone asks "How old are you??" it turns out they're like five.
Saloon
Glass and Sprocket's first meeting, way back when. Added a couple of ports for Sprocket's tubing to flow through, which makes a hell of a lot more sense than them just kind of sticking out at his joints or junctures in the plating. Better for consistency's sake too.

Some notes on black holes for a short story I have in the works. Not going for too hard of sci-fi. I know some of the basic rules here but am also going to be breaking and twisting them around a bit. Really, these are some very, very basic notes. I'm more interested in sensation and experience than knowing a bunch of complex physics, with a dash of the right vocabulary to make things seem smart.
Sideblog for my personal projects, whether that's art, writing, oc stuff, inspo, or whatever! Yall can call me duck, i use they/them and ey/em pronouns Main blog: @duck-in-a-spaceship
