NASA Does Hurricanes

NASA Does Hurricanes

When you think of NASA, you probably think of space. Which makes sense, because space is a huge part of what we do. That being said, here at NASA we are also involved in many other research areas, and even play a role in hurricane weather forecasting.

Our satellites, computer modeling, instruments, aircraft and field missions all contribute to a mix of information used by scientists to get a better understanding of these storms. Aspects of storms from rainfall rates to surface wind speed are all analyzed to help identify the potential for storm formation or intensification.

Currently, our satellites are passing overhead as Hurricane Joaquin (above) travels through the Atlantic Ocean. Our Global Precipitation Measurement, or GPM Core satellite captured images and rainfall rates of the storm. GPM showed a large area of very intense rain, which indicates that large amounts of heat are being released into the storm’s center. This fuels the circulation and provides the means for its intensification.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 80 mph and additional strengthening is expected. Joaquin could become a major hurricane during the next few days.

NASA Does Hurricanes

In 2016, we’re launching the Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS), which is a constellation of eight small satellites. With this launch, we will be able to better understand the rapid intensification of hurricanes, and improve hurricane intensity forecasts.

In addition to our satellite technology, we also conduct field missions to study hurricanes. In our most recent field mission, we investigated the process that underlie hurricane formation and intensity change in the Atlantic Ocean basin.

A Merry-Go-Round That Turns The Power Of Play Into Electricity - Vlad Vilenski posted in Green, Electricity and Non Profit

Empower Playgrounds is a nonprofit that has come up with an intriguing solution: Harnessing the power of play, it provides merry-go-rounds to schools in Ghana that generate and store electricity as they are spun around, even while teeming with laughing and smiling kids.

Richard Feynman’s Legendary Lectures On Physics, All Fifty-two Chapters, Are Now Available to Read

Richard Feynman’s legendary lectures on physics, all fifty-two chapters, are now available to read online via Caltech.

Of course, you can always watch seven of them in video form thanks to Bill Gates.

If anyone needs me, I’ll be in my physics bunk.

Power-pylons that look like looming giants

Power-pylons That Look Like Looming Giants
Power-pylons That Look Like Looming Giants

Choi + Shine, an architecture firm, has proposed modifying Iceland’s existing power-transmission pylons to turn them into looming giants whose arms are poised to reflect their positions – pylons ascending a hill will be posed as though they were scaling its slopes.

The designers claim that it can be made cost-effective through clever engineering, and that the resulting aesthetic experience will be monumental. I agree with the latter statement and am unqualified to assess the former, though Iceland has a weird and cool relationship with power, as it is ia carbon-neutral country whose electricity comes from geothermal sources.

It is easy to see where we are heading – the future will need far fewer workers. Computers, automation and robots will eliminate jobs in increasingly large numbers, and also apply downward wage pressure. Which is completely backwards from what could be happening if we designed society for the benefit of all. If the wealth were not concentrating, every worker would be benefiting from the increases in productivity created by all of this new technology. Wages would be rising and the work week would be shortening. Instead, all of the benefits are flowing straight to the 1% and everyone else is suffering.

This is where the idea of the Basic Income comes in. It is a standardized way of addressing the large scale unemployment that is coming soon, as well as simplifying welfare, retirement and disability payments, as well as making the productivity increases available to everyone in society instead of the elite few.

The idea is simple: everyone in society receives a regular income simply for being alive. The ultimate goal is for the Basic Income payment, by itself, to provide a comfortable living for every member of society without working.

Don’t Feel Drowned By Your Habits, We All Know Smoking Doesn’t Make Sense, We All Know Somebody Who

Don’t feel drowned by your habits, we all know smoking doesn’t make sense, we all know somebody who is sick because of smoking. You have the power to stop smoking. Or replace your bad habits that hinder your life with good habits that help it progress. I have a client that used to smoke, now every time she is craving a cigarette she does 50 squats, no smoking now for 2 months, but great muscle tone in her legs! This is what I mean when I say love yourself… Not your reflection. Your actions are a reflection of how you see yourself. Big up all those who have stopped smoking, stopping smoking or even thinking about it! If you have stopped let me know how long for, if you are stopping let me know how and why. If you are thinking about it hopefully you will read the comments and try to stop. #spartanfam #strength #health #streetart
