Hungry in the Dark

In a city where the light has fallen and the sound of war has grown louder, Abdul Karim, a child, walks barefoot among the rubble of houses, searching for something... anything.

Since he was shot in the head, Abdul Karim has lost his sight, and darkness has settled in his eyes. He lives his days leaning against collapsed walls, his dreams hanging on the phrase, "Tomorrow might be better."

He would say in a low voice, "Mama, I'm hungry... but my stomach isn't the thing that hurts the most. What hurts is that I can no longer see your face."

His mother tried to hide her tears, cooking him whatever she could find: sometimes breadcrumbs, sometimes water and sugar... if she could find it.

Hungry? Yes.

In the dark? Of course.

But his heart is still warm, and his tongue recites the prayer every night:

"Oh Lord, don't deprive me of your tenderness, even if you deprive me of your eyes."

... living in the shadows of war, hungry in body and soul. But hope has not died... because in every living heart, there is an opportunity to create a new light.
