{Titus}
[It was early in the morning when Cardinal finally reached the destination he’d been looking for.]
Cardinal: This is it, then? You’re sure of it?
Scout: Rarf!
[After leaving Sanda Enterprises the day before, he had spent some time hiding in the streets. He’d taken refuge in an abandoned structure that was not quite stable, preferring to take the risk of structural collapse over the risk of being caught.
He was still on a mission, and he’d fight to the last rather than be taken off duty. He just couldn’t afford that, and he really didn’t want to have to pound any of his friends into submission for trying to “help”.
As he cooled down—literally and figuratively—from his encounter with Call, he was able to think more clearly and come up with a new plan.
He’d tried to find clues by searching Shade’s city. He’d walked all over town. He’d tried to search near Shade’s family: in his private retreat he called home. None of that had been helpful, which left him with only one option. The option he had always known, in the end, that it would come down to….]
Cardinal: -Somewhat darkly- (So this is what your other “office” looks like…)
[…to find the place where ”Radar” did his other work. ]
Cardinal: …
Cardinal: (I pray to GOD that this WORKS…!)
[He was truly miserable, feeling naught but despair.
Even with Graham beaten back, the threat of Monstropolis still wasn’t over. It had been narrowly avoided too many times already—he was certain that the destruction Avi and Bat could have caused would have tipped the scales over the edge of what would be forgiven.
Their manipulation of forces that targeted the general public had placed tens of thousands at risk, and would have had very high casualty reports if they’d been carried out to their fullest. And if that had come to pass, he knew that the military—which he always knew HAD to be alive and well, despite what the Mighties believed—would not just sit and watch.]
Cardinal: (I have to find you, Shade…)
[And if that held true for the other Mighty Numbers, it most certainly held true for Shade. Other robots might cause destruction on the scale of a single building, or even hold a massive monument hostage… but they were second rate when compared to the Teal Silence.
It was one thing to try and curtail the average fighter with a show of force.
It was quite another to go up against the world’s deadliest assassin.]
Cardinal: (…before they reduce your core to nothing but ashes…!)
[He couldn’t bear to see his mission fail in any form or another.
If he failed to find Shade in time, then the Mighty Number would only be found AFTER he had already caused massive damage. Maybe even casualties. If he failed, innocent lives would pay the price.
If he failed to stop Shade in time, then his best friend would be deemed a threat that was too great of a risk. There would be no mercy shown by those ordered to carry out the order with extreme prejudice. If he failed… then the price of justice would be the life of the man who was all but his brother.
He’d lose Shade forever, and no force in this world could ever bring him back.]
Baron: -Twittercheep!-
Cardinal: -Brought out of his thoughts- …
Cardinal: Good work, Scout.
[The happy Zigzagoon gave a yip and wagged his tail, looking more like a bristle brush than anything else. He seemed pleased to have been of use to his short master.]
Cardinal: -Crouches down- Now let’s see what we’re dealing with in here…
[Cardinal used SEARCH SNAKE!]
[He returned to his feet, taking a few steps back as the explosive camera slithered inside.]
Cardinal: (Come on…! Please let this be…!)
[There was a creepy skittering noise just before the feed suddenly cut out.]
Cardinal: !
[His face split into a grin.]
Cardinal: There’s someone inside!
[Hope. A mere flicker, less than a spark, but it was there nonetheless. There was still a chance.]
Cardinal: Finally…. We’re actually getting somewhere….
He held out his finger to invite Baron to come off his shoulder, allowing him to better look him in the eye.]
Cardinal: This is going to be it, guys. I’m going in.
Scout: Rarf! -Eagerly runs around in a circle, battllllllllllle-
Cardinal: Sorry, Scout. But this will be too much for the both of you, I’m afraid.
Scout: —rrrrr?
The Zig merely tilted his head in confusion, but Baron puffed up in indignation before taking alight and flapping his wings in Cardinal’s face.]
Baron: -We are a battle beast, excuse— -
Cardinal: Heh. Think you can take on a den of assassins, do you?
[The bird gave a fiery huff before landing on the ground and strutting haughtily, beak in the air.
Cardinal smiled sadly, reminded of gentler days when hope was young.]
Cardinal: I guess they’re right in what they say… you really ARE a bird version of me…
Cardinal: -Of course, that’s why I chose you, in the first place-
[He shook his head.]
Cardinal: Neither of you have enough levels to take this challenge on. I’m sorry, but you’ll have to stay behind.
Scout: -Whine of protest-
Cardinal: I know, I know… but there’s more to it than just that. It’s really cramped in there. When things start going south…
Cardinal: I don’t want to have to worry about trying not to hit you. Because that’s probably something that would happen.
Cardinal: So. I’m going to need the both of you to stay behind. Stay out of sight. And…
[He hesitated, not really all too eager to think on the matter he was about to bring up. But given the circumstances… he didn’t have much of a choice.]
Cardinal: …if there’s a big explosion…
[He turned to look away.
This was going to be dangerous. Almost certainly more dangerous than his last battle, but probably more so. The chances of him not making it…
…They were not something that could be ignored.]
Cardinal: -CLEARLY unhappy-
Scout: -Wha— why are you sad all of a sudden??-
Scout: -Whiiiine, no don’t be saaad—here have some kisses on your hand–
[Cardinal sighed and gave the thieving ‘coon some scritches.]
Cardinal: …Well, if that happens, then just get out of there and head to Sanda Enterprises. Just… just do it, okay?
Scout: D: > -Whiiiiiiine, no, we can't leave short master behind— -
Cardinal: …Scout… -Sighs, putting a hand to his face-
Scout: -Will Dig out if needed, not leaving behind--
Scout: -Sits stubbornly- -Whiiiine-
Cardinal: (No! I—!)
Cardinal: (I can't let you be the one to find out…!)
Cardinal: -Struggles to come up with a plausible lie- You…
Cardinal: …you'll probably… probably want help from Mic. Or Digger or something.
Cardinal: (If he could somehow communicate what had happened, I'm sure Diggs would know that I'm gone…)
Cardinal: So just. Go home, if that happens. Okay? Both of you.
Scout: -Whiiiiiiine...-
[Scout STILL seemed very sad and displeased at the command, but in the end, he gave a sad 'Borf' of confirmation.]
Scout: -Rarf.-
Baron: -Huff- -Puffs up into a borb, shrinking down in on himself to indicate he'd stay put… for now.-
Cardinal: Good. Thank you.
[He returns his attention to the entrance.]
Cardinal: All my efforts have led me here. I always knew in my heart it would come down to this….
[There was a mechanical whine as his blaster began priming for a charged shot.]
Cardinal: Time to end this.
<DLN-000 has entered Lethal Combat mode.>
Cardinal: -Rushes through the door-
[He stood ready for the first obstacle—the Search Snake hadn't made it very far inside, after all, before—]
[SSSSPPPT!]
[There's a shot of sticky strings that shoot out from one shadowy corner of the ceiling—a humanoid spider bot with beady, sickly, magenta eyes, fangs glinting in the low lighting. She has many legs to move around with—but the strings seem to come from her fingertips.]
Arachnia: -Mine—!-
Cardinal: !!
Arachnia: Stupid fly, walking into our web—
[She YANKS at where she had aimed, which propels her in a savage POUNCE for Cardinal himself—]
Arachnia: MINE—!
Cardinal: Not likely—!
[He aimed right for the abdomen, releasing the charged shot that had been building up the whole time!]
Arachnia: -SCREECH—-
[She skids away across the room, her many legs failing to find perchance in anything as she flails in pain where she landed—]
[He began preparing another charged shot, but this time, it appeared as a flaming orb.]
Cardinal: -Eyes taking on a more nasty red color, almost visible behind his visor-
Cardinal: You know what the only way to be sure is when exterminating pests?
Cardinal: TO KILL IT WITH FIRE!
[Cardinal used ATOMIC FIRE!]
[The spider assassin SCREAMS in agony, flailing harder as the fire spread to the area around her, and desperately rolls put it out. There's movement from somewhere deeper in the den, and—]
[BANG BANG—!]
[Shots expertly fired from the main room up ahead, although these are merely standard bullets.]
[KTING! KTEOW!]
[The shots bounced harmlessly off of Cardinal's shield, and he openly blared his thoughts on the source: unamused, and very unimpressed.]
Cardinal: You PUNKS! What is this, amateur hour?!
[He fires a non-charged blast of Atomic Fire right down the hallway before charging for the source, shield-first.]
[The temperature in here was quickly rising—]
"HISSSSS—"
Cardinal: ?!
[He couldn't FEEL that specific signal, but if he had turned off his transceiver…]
Cardinal: Viper, I swear that IF THAT IS /YOU/—
"Stop STRUGGLING."
[Coils of something long and slim circled fast near the First, a hooded figure rising rapidly with venom dripping fangs not unlike the spider bot before her.]
Tanith: I HATE men that only spout nonsense!
Tanith: DIE!
[Okay. Not QUITE what Cardinal had expected. Being crushed to death by a fetching snake woman had not been on his list of things he anticipated with dealing with that day.]
Tenith: -Hissss— -
[Panels that looked like her hair at first extended outward, giving her the appearance of a cobra hood. She sashayed from left to right, before LUNGING for his neck—]
[Cardinal used LEAF SHIELD!]
[A swirling cloud of ceratanium death enveloped them both, originating from within the coils. It was like a rain of daggers and shrapnel, carried upon violent winds.
Rather than getting a mouthful of his cabling and wires, she ended up getting her mouth impaled with such force that it effectively was like hitting a solid wall. That was on top of the dozens and dozens of cuts all along the underside of her lower half that had been coiled around her prey.]
[BWIP!]
[To add insult to injury, the short intruder was suddenly gone, causing her to fall into a heap when that solid support was no longer there.]
Cardinal: I’ll give you this, /Lady/…
[Since when was he several feet back near where he’d started from?]
Cardinal: Unlike my brother, at least you’re no COWARD!
[Cardinal used NEEDLE CANNON!]
THOOM! THOOM! THOOM!
[The Needle Cannon made a deep booming noise, firing at a relatively slow rate compared to a normal plasma blast. It was still fast enough, especially with the first impalement pinning her into place.]
Tanith: NHAAAAAA—!
[Her tail wildly destroyed the environment around her as she wailed, trying to yank the needle out of her--but it was far too wedged into the concrete.]
[—?]
[...Why was her tail going through the wall?]
Cardinal: (Hologram? Ugh, Xel technology must be so advanced for me not to notice!)
[He huffed and turned his back to her, pinging for Jazz to come on inside.]
Cardinal: (Whatever. I don't have time for…)
Bzzzzzzz…
Cardinal: …?
[He quickly brought up another Leaf Shield, trying to identify where he’d heard that noise before. It wasn’t long before he found out.]
BZZZZZZZZZ!!
[A swarm of wasp-like drones zoomed into view, bearing down on him with surprising speed. Most of the swarm got shredded up by the shield, but there were still dozens left over. Dozens that tore into him mercilessly, clearly meant for the kill.
The stings, however, had no effect. Most did not even manage to get past his armor. The few that went for his neck and audio cables merely caused small puncture wounds that were very cheap to heal over. He could tell by the chemical analysis that there was some sort of toxin in them: something lethal to Xelbots (and maybe also humans), no doubt. But on him, it had no effect at all. No effect except to make him annoyed, that is.]
Cardinal: (Ugh, what a bunch of pests…)
[While they didn’t really cause any major damage, they were a distraction that he didn’t particularly care for. And not necessarily one easy to get rid of, either. If he were in a more casual setting, he would have admired the genius of it; using a swarm of unassuming, small, fast moving, hard to hit, toxic drones may or may not be as effective in the arena against bulky opponents like Mic, but they would be terrifyingly effective against the average civilian, human or Xelbot.
Sadly, he didn’t have the time or inclination to make an a deep analysis of the situation.]
<DLN-000 to CSU-001>: > JAZZ—!
<DLN-000 to CSU-001>: > Time to shine!
[He teleported out of the swarm of wasps, leaving them a prone and concentrated target. His (ultimately) faithful support unit came charging down the hallway.]
Jazz: HHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHSSSSSSS…!
[There was a brief clicking noise, followed by a stream of fire. The drones got burnt into a crisp.]
<DLN-000 to CSU-001>: >Well done, Jazz!
<DLN-000 to CSU-001>: > Now let’s go say hello!
[The two of them ran down the open hallway. More shots were fired, prompting him to bring up the shield again.]
Cardinal: (This is very odd. Shade had his own ROOM rigged with traps. But other than the false wall, I haven’t run into a single one so—)
[As Cardinal entered into the main room, a solid square foot of wicked looking spikes shot up through the floor with such force that they would have impaled a lesser man. They crackled with strange energy that seemed to try and shake him to the core, sending a wave of odd sensation all through his body. It was as if it were trying to thrash him on a much smaller level, until he flew apart into a pile of pieces, but it wasn’t even close to working on him. Thanks to his armor, he didn’t get impaled, either…]
Cardinal: Woah—!
[But it WAS enough of a sudden change in his footing to cause him to stumble and nearly lose his balance.
As it turned out…]
BZZZZZZZ BANG BANG BANG—
[That was all the time that the assassins needed.]
Cardinal: -More out of annoyance than anything else- Gah!
[With the shots coming in from a corner rather than head on, he took some minor damage from the bullets. The stings were even less effective, though the cloud of insect signals was making it harder to focus on the other signals in the background. The room was starting to grow even hotter…]
Cardinal: -Starts charging his blaster- (Not THIS again—)
[Before he could even finish that line of thinking, there was a static-riddled roar, sounding almost like the rage of the ocean. There was a blast of cold air and a strong force that pushed him back, causing him to trip backwards over the spikes.]
Cardinal: -Oof— -
[Just as he was getting to his feet again, still under fire, there was a loud grinding noise to his right. He became alarmed as he heard the noise of loud and heavy footsteps bearing crashing down in his direction.]
Cardinal: !!!
[He turned and shielded just in time to prevent a large and heavy sword from slamming into him.]
[It was at this point that he noticed his blaster had been frozen over.]
Cardinal: Glitch!
[He didn’t think on it long, instead switching to something that didn’t require use of a blaster to work.]
[Cardinal used SUPER ARM!]
WHAM!
[He turned and hit the knight so hard that he was sent soaring across the room and slamming into the wall… which was dislodged by the application of force and spun around, continuing the knight’s path into the wall on the side of the other room, too.]
Cardinal: (Secret passages? Of COURSE there would—)
[He was slammed to the ground from the left.]
Cardinal: !!! -Brings up Leaf Shield-
[Once again, his attacker got nothing but a mouthful of leaves for their trouble—though THIS time, the opponent in question appeared to be a massively buff, anthropomorphic shark.]
Riptide: -Gives off a staticky ROAR again-
<DLN-000 to CSU-001>: > STALL FOR ME!
[Cardinal used SKULL BARRIER!]
HHHHHHHHSSSSSSSS CLICK FOOOOOOOOOOSH—
[Both of them were blasted by fire, though Cardinal was unaffected by it. Riptide gave glitched roars of pain, lashing out at Cardinal in a frenzy. Cardinal responded by using a self-defense move carried out to flip off an attacker that was on top of you—]
Cardinal: -Shatters the half-melted ice against the spikes-
[—and then tossing the marine predator across the room, slamming him into the marksman that had been pestering him the whole time.]
???: -Muffled cursing-
[He smirked to see that the marksman wasn’t strong enough to move his massive coworker, though he didn’t have long to gloat on it.]
BZZZZZZ…
[He was swarmed again, his time by a cloud so thick that he couldn’t even see—though he had seen enough in the split second to find out where they were all coming from. There was an unassuming, gardener looking fellow standing in the hallway opposite the entrance, looking very out of place in a den of ruthless killers and spies.
But then again—just as with the unassuming nature of their weapon of choice—that’s probably what made them so successful, wasn’t it?]
Cardinal: Buzz off!
[Cardinal used FIRE STORM!]
[He dropped the Skull Barrier for the time being, becoming engulfed by a protective shield of flames. This also fired a sizable fire charge in front of him, roaring across the room to blast the unfortunate nature assassin in the face.]
Vera: -SCREEEE, PAAAIIINNNN— -
[He could hear her running off—likely to go out some secret exit that led around to the holographic wall from earlier—but he didn’t care at this juncture. All the battle, the frustration, the annoying fights— it was starting to feed into an aggressive frenzy of his own.
He may not be infected with a virus that corrupted his free will, but he was damn well cursed with the sin of Wrath, especially when worked up into such a state.]
Cardinal: I’m GOING TO GET INFORMATION TONIGHT! I won’t stop until I do!
Cardinal: If you know what’s good for you, you will TELL ME ABOUT RADAR!
[His eyes were becoming a deeper red in rage, the heat starting to become quite uncomfortable.]
Cardinal: Someone will talk, and I don't care who—even if I have to BEAT you within an INCH OF YOUR LIFE!
[He was hit square-on with a blast of ice, which melted upon contact with the Fire Storm. The water did put his shield out, however, leaving him back to normal again.
This minor setback was nothing compared to the searing beam that followed.]
"Radar is LONG gone, Mr. Light."
Cardinal: -Pain-
[He suffered under the intensity of the scorching light, the likes of which he could only remember fragments of—the smallest snippets of memory of his life as a newon, in decades long past.
The searing of the mechanism that had branded his serial into his shoulder, leaving it neatly engraved.]
Cardinal: -It burns-
[Light seems to shine from the construct who's voice was as perfect as her appearance—one is lead to think that she had chosen this time to shine so brightly, as there was no indicator that she was even there.]
Diamond: -Grabs one of her prism floating near her, still smoking-
Diamond: You're almost too pitiful to even think about. Did you really think Radar would come back here?
Diamond: If he did, the lot of us would be Xel stains on the floor.
Cardinal: Nnn…
Cardinal: Who are you?
Diamond: -Gives a look-
Diamond: Really.
Diamond: ...Well, I suppose he wouldn't have mentioned my name, even in passing...
Cardinal: …
Cardinal: …!!
[Wait.
Those prisms.
They almost looked like… diamonds…]
>1 CROSS REFERENCE IDENTIFIED
[It led to nothing but a blank file. Nothing but a name, one mentioned months ago in passing.]
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
“Don't wanna ruin this lil tour here for ya, so I'll chime ahead to Diamond and tell her you'll be there tonight. Could really use your help.”
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Cardinal: Sh-Shade’s boss…?
[Her lips curl into a cruel smile.]
Diamond: Oh, so he did? I wonder, how much he actually told you…
Diamond: Given that you two are so close, despite circumstances.
Diamond: -Tch- Stupid cowboy can't keep his mouth shut, huh.
Diamond: Idiot.
[This insult might as well have been aimed at him instead, for the effect it had on Cardinal. He felt a burning need to defend Shade’s honor, even with the situation being what it was.]
Cardinal: -Annoyance data, speaking aloud now- No!
Cardinal: Bladeblaster was the moron who opened his mouth!
Diamond: Him? He was always a troublesome little flaw…
Diamond: Absolutely obsessed with the Mighty Numbers ever since he ditched us for whoever had offered him that new leader position.
Diamond: Good...
Cardinal: —?
[Three of the floating prisms suddenly make a triangle formation, and—]
Diamond: RIDDANCE!
Cardinal: !
[He brings his shield out in front of him out of instinct.]
[Another searing laser shoots out of the prisms, and Diamond herself seems to—fade?, No, wait, it was the LIGHT around her that was fading—]
[Cardinal was not amused to be fighting another invisible opponent.]
Cardinal: Are you kidding me?!
Diamond: Thanks for the bonfires, Cardinal Light.
Diamond: Plenty for me to work with.
Cardinal: (I was WONDERING what sort of things his BOSS would be capable of…)
Cardinal: (But if she's his boss… that means she knows what I need!)
Diamond: -Snaps fingers, making a perfect ringing tone- Riptide.
Diamond: Tear him apart.
[Riptide laughed at this before charging across the room. Somewhat to his surprise, Cardinal responded by charging forward, himself.
While Riptide leaped at him, Cardinal dropped down to a slide, using his shield to vault the shark over him. Jazz snarled and leaped onto the shark, digging into him with claws and teeth.
This placed Cardinal right at the edge of the room, next to the marksman.]
BANG!
[There was a slight chipping and shattering noise as Cardinal's visor crumbled where it had been shot. Cardinal growled.]
Cardinal: I've had enough of you!
[Cardinal used ICE SLASHER!]
[Six rounds of ice blasts were fired off in extremely rapid succession.
Any soul unfortunate enough to get caught by such arrows found themselves impaled by blades of ice -200ºF.
The marksman was abruptly rendered inactive, the cold that seeped throughout his body making it too hard to breathe, let alone to fire.]
Cardinal: -Hmph-
WHAM!
[He turned his attention to Riptide, who was trying to pull Jazz off of him. When that hadn't worked, he'd tried ramming her against a wall. She was more nimble than that, and had landed on top of his head.]
Cardinal: (She seems to be doing fine, but where is—)
[BSSSSS—!]
[Pain, searing pain, another beam of searing LIGHT had hit him square on his back—]
Cardinal: -OW-
Diamond: Sturdy thing for someone that's not even Xel.
Cardinal: (How much does she KNOW?)
[He vaguely knew that he'd already survived things that would have more than disabled a Xelbot in the past few minutes in the den, but still—]
Cardinal: Yeah, that's the general idea!
Diamond: No Xel signal, no previous data—I thought something seemed wrong when he pulled some favors...
Cardinal: (That's it, keep talking…)
Diamond: And look where THAT brought you.
Diamond: Looking for the second highest kill count in CAL behind me.
Diamond: But that's not gonna stop you, isn't it?
[Cardinal didn't answer right away, instead firing in the direction of the sound: this time, using two Power Capsules at once.]
[Cardinal used METAL BLADE! Cardinal used THUNDER BEAM!]
Diamond: -HNK—!-
[The Metal Blades were avoided, but she wasn't fast enough to dodge the lighting—she was thrown back enough to hit the wall and convulses for a moment from the volts of electricity wracking her frame.]
Cardinal: -Eyes starting to creep into a full green- (Ha! Not impervious!)
Diamond: You....
[Her head is low, but the aura she's emitting suddenly flares, and several virus alarms once again silently blare in response.
When she raises her head, it's jerky and unnatural.
Her once golden hues are now a sickly mixture of a chilling, icy blue and an all too familiar magenta.]
Cardinal: (What the hell…? The Prairie Kings weren't like this…)
Diamond?: Go home, Songbird.
Diamond?: This burning world has nothing to do with you anymore.
Cardinal: !!!
[Her voice isn't... it's not just hers...]
Diamond?: This isn't your FIGHT.
Cardinal: Seeing as I'm here fighting right now, that appears not to be the case!
[He began cracking with electricity again.]
Cardinal: There are only three things that happen now! Either I go home once he's there, I bring him back myself, or I die trying!
Cardinal: There are no other options!
[Diamond—or whatever was controlling her now—seemed very tired at that sentence, which bled away into annoyance.]
Diamond?: Moron. Then D I E.
[She raises her arm again, and another beam fires at Cardinal. By the end of the attack, her aura dies down, and Diamond seems to not have noticed what just had occurred, herself.]
Diamond: They don't call Radar a ghost for nothing!
Cardinal: …
[He decided to shake it off, focusing on the present.]
Cardinal: Even ghosts must materialize somewhere eventually!
Cardinal: You’re the one who has the answers, Diamond!
[Cardinal used THUNDER BEAM!]
Diamond: -HN—-
Diamond: CINDERUS! Check him!
Diamond: Riptide, for Xel's sake, I told you to TEAR HIM APART!
Diamond: SOMEBODY KILL THAT MAN ALREADY!
[There was a large crash and Cardinal had to whirl around to face the knight that was bearing down on him. Meanwhile—spurned on, perhaps, by the fear of the boss—Riptide finally threw Jazz off of him and rushed from the other direction.
Cardinal was clearly caught between the hammer and the anvil—]
[BWIP!]
[He teleported across the room, causing Riptide to fall over. Cinderus dodged to the side, jumping over him quite easily.]
Jazz: RRRRRRRRREEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRNNNNGGGHHHHH…
Jazz: HHHHHHHHSSSSSSS…
[Click FOOOOOOOOSH]
[This time, she set the floor on fire as well.]
Bareeeeeeeep! Bareeeeeeep!
[Fire alarms starting going off, followed by the sprinkler system. The water was black from being dirty, as was prone to happen with sprinklers.]
Cardinal: Game's over, Cinders!
[He was not about to let this drag out any longer in such a way than he had to. When his two opponents turned to rush at him again, this time he stood his ground.]
Cardinal: CHECKMATE!
[Cardinal used METAL BLADE!]
[He absolutely spammed the attack, deadly saw blades spinning through the air. They went right into the armor, which was nothing compared to what they did to Riptide's face. The shark roared in pain, starting to gush infected Xel.]
Diamond: —!!
Diamond: Glitch—
[One of them nicked her legs, and another her arms—which only enraged her further.]
Diamond: You ruined me—
Diamond: I'm going to BURY you so deep NO ONE will EVER find you!
[DOZENS of her prisms suddenly materialize, the room becoming ever darker by the second. Diamond was hard to see, but one could still make out her outline.]
Cardinal: You wouldn't be the first to TRY—
[Cinderus let out a battle cry and rushed at him, forcing him to turn his attention elsewhere.]
Cardinal: !
[He pivoted to the side, but the black knight was quick on his feet. He, too, stepped in turn, bearing his sword down on Cardinal's shield. Cardinal shoved him off, doing a backflip to give himself a bit of distance.]
[Cardinal used NEEDLE CANNON!]
[The attack served as a lance, piercing the knight right in the shoulder. By now, the room was so dark that Cardinal had switched over to night vision.]
[BSSSST—]
[There was a priming noise—and then a blast of blinding light—!] Cardinal: -PAIN— -
>WARNING! INTERNAL TEMPERATURE HAS EXCEEDED SAFE LEVELS!
[He couldn't see anything. Not anymore. His visual receptors had been overflooded. All he could feel right now was the baking heat of his core, roasting away at his insides.]
Cardinal: -Hot, too hot to move-
Diamond: Gnh…
Diamond: Took us long enough, damnit…
Diamond: You're beyond stupid to even THINK about coming here and coming out alive.
Diamond: -Prism in hand, pointing right at Cardinal's face—-
Cardinal: Hhhh…
[Was this to be the end? He was too hot to teleport safely. And he didn’t want to.]
Cardinal: -Coughs on the heat-
[He wasn’t sure whether the next blast would prove fatal. He was strong, but his body was old… and she was powerful, and exacerbating his weakness.
But there was one thing certain.
If Diamond truly dealt a killing blow…]
Cardinal: Say your goodbyes too, then, Diamond…
[…They’d both be vaporized in the ensuing explosion.]
Diamond: Please.
Diamond: Why do you think they formed CAL in the first place?
[There was a priming noise, and Cardinal gave an aggravated sigh as he stared at the prism.]
Diamond: For the bots too dangerous, too volatile, too much for anyone out there!
Cardinal: (I can move quickly—my shield—)
Diamond: They send us into the dark to take care of problems they've lost the NERVE for.
Cardinal: (But not at the speed of LIGHT…)
Diamond: Because they're all too scared to clean up their own me—
[SHNK!]
Diamond: GHAAAAAAAAAAAAA—!
Cardinal: —?!
[That hadn't been him. And it sure wasn't Jazz.]
[The assassin leader SCREAMED as Xel ran down her face, from the metal arrow that had found it's mark—right in her eye.]
"Score!"
Cardinal: -Vents enough heat to turn around somewhat quickly- ?
[SHNK—]
Cardinal: AUGH!
[Maybe moving in the process was a bad idea.]
[Out from the shadows, the first thing one would see is two glowing, yellow eyes. A wolf's head...]
((Pic—Howlstriker))
[—But as the new construct quickly came into view, it was merely a very convincing headdress. A young woman with facepaint and many feathers, beads, and such on her person, grinning with cheerful glee as she aimed a longbow at Diamond.]
???: Hi, boss!
Diamond: Howlstriker—!
[SHNK—]
[Another arrow flew through the air, catching Diamond off guard as it dug into her shoulder.]
Howl: -Drawing another arrow- Ha, I've always wanted to do this.
Diamond: You—You stupid mutt—
Howl: Wooow, I'm so offended.
[SHNK—!]
Jazz: RRRROOOOOOOWWRRRR!
[Cardinal winced as he used Super Arm to pull the arrow out of his shoulder, where it had impaled him. Oil and coolant flowed out onto his armor, and crackling and other noises from broken mechanics could be faintly heard.]
Cardinal: (No—! I NEED HER ALIVE TO TALK—!)
[As the last arrow struck Diamond in her abdomen, Howlstriker's wolf ears twitched at the faint crackling from Cardinal. She turns.]
Howl: ...
Howl: O.O
Howl: .....coooool.....
[As they were talking, the wound was glowing with a white light. Frayed wires were wrapping back together, bent fan blades straightening back into shape, punctured plating sealing over.
Within mere moments, the damage was undone completely.]
Howl: O . O !!
Howl: -GAAAASP-
Howl: You!
Howl: You you you, I found you—
[Cardinal was alarmed at this.]
Cardinal: (She's been HUNTING me?!)
Howl: : D!! You made me go in a big huge circle! Usually, I'd be mad, but you're too good.
Diamond: Gh....
[Cinderus moves from where he had fallen—]
[SHNK—!]
[—Only to fall unconscious once Howl fires another arrow at his hip.]
Howl: -Sniff sniff- You smell like barbecue. C:
Cardinal: —… (Augh, she must be like Jazz…)
[Spending several days in Kansas City without washing his scarf had undoubtedly led to it getting infused with scents from the local culture.]
Howl: -Takes a step forward--
Cardinal: -Shifts his arm back into a blaster- Stay back, hunter!
Howl: —?
Howl: -Whiiiiines- Awwww...
Howl: I was only trying to help? Was it because I shot you?
Howl: I mean, in my defense, you kinda got in the way, dumbass. : /
Cardinal: I have enough hunters looking for the prize as it is!
Howl: ....
Howl: -Aaaand it clicks- Oooooooh....
Howl: -Laughs- Oh my gaaaawwwd, you're funny—
Howl: If I wanted you dead, I would've tried harder, duuuuh.
Cardinal: Not if you wanted to toy with me first!
Diamond: Howl...
Howl: -Ignores- Nah, wolves don't do that.
Cardinal: Not NORMALLY, anyway…
Howl: Come oooooon, I'm not crazy like everyone else—I was taking a nap when everyone went insane.
Howl: Which I don't mind! : D I never liked anyone down here anyway!
Howl: Especially Refractor, maaaan that felt good.
Diamond: -Grumbles of protest-
Cardinal: (She… she's not sick? But…)
Cardinal: (But if she touched the Xel—)
Cardinal: (She has to get out of here, it's not safe— but I still need—!)
Cardinal: Howlstriker, was it?
Howl: Yuuup. c:
Howl: That's my name, don't wear it out.~ -Wink-
Cardinal: I need data. I need to find Radar—!
Howl: Radar...?
[It takes her a moment to think, crossing her arms and then--]
Howl: Diamoooond, I forget, who's Radar again?
Diamond: -Coughs- Are you kidding me, he's talking about Bullseye—
Howl: OH, okay—
Howl: Sorry, that guy has, like, a bajillon different names—
Cardinal: I need to know what sort of access he had to top-secret information and restricted entry in matters of national security!
Howl: Uuuuh.
Howl: -Thinks again-
Howl: ...I guess since everything is pretty much borked right now, I guess I could tell you...
Diamond: You will do no such—
[SHNK—! Another arrow to her leg.]
Diamond: -NNH—-
Howl: Well...
Howl: Bullesye, Radar, I dunno, I'm just gonna call him Shade, he's pretty much the favor guy.
Cardinal: (The… huh?)
Howl: You need something done, Shade can get it for ya.
Howl: Like, every single time.
Howl: Papers, info, stuff that ya don't have clearance for?
Howl: Shade got it all cuz he has access to it. Kinda like how Diamond does?
Diamond: You useless blabbermouth—!
Howl: -Yet again ignores- I haven't seen him have any trouble with clearance or anything like that.
Howl: He's great! : D I like him.
Cardinal: He… he really is, but… Augh…
[He started pacing a bit.]
Jazz: Ree-ow.
Cardinal: (I'd… really hoped that learning these things would narrow it down for me, would give me a clue…)
[Jazz came over to sniff at Howlstriker, flicking her tail as her master paced around.]
Howl: Kitty! :D
Jazz: -Prrrr-
Howl: Oh gosh I love cats—
Cardinal: (Come on, Cardinal, THINK…. He could be ANYWHERE…)
Diamond: -Nnnh...- -Fading in and out of consciousness, why this-
Cardinal: (What did the virus do to you, Shade?)
Cardinal: (What would it do with someone who can go just about…)
Howl: -Scritches for them- Hey, so, you're looking for him?
Cardinal: Need, need to find him…
Cardinal: Need to find him before the—
Cardinal: —!!!
Howl: o.o?
[There was a painful SCREEEEEEEEE noise from his fans grinding in alarm.]
Howl: -Ooow ears—-
Cardinal: OH GOD, SHADE—
Howl: ???
[He needed to find him before the feds did, before they turned him to cinders…
But if Shade got to THEM first… ]
Cardinal: Howlstriker you need to leave it's not safe you'll get sick dunno if Beck should know where this is there's no time to debate JAZZ WE'RE GETTING OUT OF HERE—
Howl: Huh—
Howl: Sloooow down, you're talkin' way too fast—
[He grabbed his cat, prompting her to turn into her Civvie form so she could be carried. Cardinal was blaring data that screamed alarm and near panic.]
Cardinal: Can't tell them 'til I'm sure, too early in the morning, they'd take me away—
[He was already halfway down the hall at this point.]
Howl: Hey wait I want answers, HEEEEY—
[Howl gave pursuit, leaving Diamond to bleed there along with the rest of the constructs in the assassin den.]
Cardinal: DON'T HAVE TIME, NEED TO LEAVE—
Cardinal: HE'S HEADED FOR THE WHITE HOUSE!
Howl: Wha—RADAR?
Howl: -But that doesn't make sense, when everyone went crazy we all went after targets we were already assigned to, unless—-
Howl: ...unless someone else gave him a...?
Howl: -...Oh, oh that ain't good—-
[He didn't bother keeping quiet as he exited back into the dark pre-sunrise air.]
Cardinal: SCOUT! BARON! WE'RE LEAVING!
Scout: RARF—
Howl: —??? -Dog bark but that's a raccoon—-
Baron: -Flies over to sit on Cardinal's shoulder-
[Cardinal used PROTO JET!]
[A windsurfer that looked a great deal like his shield appeared. This one was larger than normal, set to accommodate several additional little passengers.]
Cardinal: -Scoops up Scout- Bye, Howlstriker. Give my regards to Sanda Enterprises if I don't return!
Howl: D:>??? -I'M STILL SO CONFUSED-
Howl: WHAT EVEN ARE YOU, THOUGH—
Howl: HEEEEEY—
Cardinal: Ask Brand or something if I don't make it back! I'll explain it myself someday if I do!
Howl: BUT—
[With that, he took off to the skies.]
Howl: I looked for days and you just fly away—
Howl: D |< What kind of chase was that?! Uuuuugh...
Howl: ....
Howl: (...Didn't he say something about Sanda Enterprises?)
Cardinal: -Calls out- Hopefully one with a happy ending! Sorry, gotta jet!
[He took a sharp turn just out of sight, but when one followed him around the corner… he was gone.]
-=-=-=-=-=-=-
{Washington D.C.}
[Cardinal kept an impressive degree of balance as he took out an E-tank and a W-tank, downing them one at a time as they raced through the wind. He would need all his energy in the upcoming fight.
He was glad for the company, here at the end of his journey—and now, Baron would be crucial to communication, should his guess prove right.
He honestly wasn’t sure what he hoped for more, or dreaded worse… that he might have guessed wrong (and thus traveled all that way for nothing, with Shade still at large…)
…or that he would have guessed right, and things were about to get so much /worse./
A soft whine reminded him that he wasn’t the only one worried about the matter.]
Cardinal: We’ll be there soon, Scout. …Baron, you know what to do.
[ALMOST THERE.
He had to make it, he had to— he was going as fast as he possibly could, now was the time—]
Cardinal: (Hang in there, Shade…)
[From this height, he could see a few of the numerous iconic buildings and structures that served as blatant landmarks for his destination.]
Cardinal: I will stop you!

[The days seemed to go on forever. It had gotten very dark and cloudy outside, blending day into night.
Mikhail and DWN-019 worked almost non-stop on Doctor Light Number Eight—with the Doctor’s sons enforcing mandatory mental and physical breaks to prevent burnout.
Getting to Tobias’s actual coding was not easy. Offline or not, he was highly defensive—and not pleased that anyone was going near his coding.
And when they did find him…
It was just a mess. There were errors all over the place, and clearing them up would take quite some while. Sifting through the error report from the last system crash alone took DAYS.
And now, they were finally getting past the system reports and into the base data.]
Mikhail: …
Siam: Doctor?
Gemini: Is everything alright?
Mikhail: Mmm? Oh, yes… I’m fine.
[…But it was a lie.
A lie so as to not distract the twins from their analysis on the data they had got from Avi as part of the ordeal—for that information could prove quite enlightening.
But no…]
Mikhail: Just… a little weary, I suppose.
[…He was concerned.
Inspection of the Awareness code had showed that it had changed. Crucial components had changed—rewritten themselves.
Somehow, the encounter with Avi had prompted (or, more likely, FORCED) Tobias to rewrite himself.
What worried Mikhail the most was that some of the coding was beyond what he could recognize.]
Mikhail: (-Groooooaaan- {Will… I wish you were here…!})
[He still had the few fragments of notes that his best friend had given him regarding coding with Xel. That was a lifesaver—it told him that some of this seemed to be connected to functioning within a Xel chassis.
It may just be junk data, useless without the proper hardware. (Which, of course, would mean it would need to be pruned somehow, or else it would cause perpetual system errors.)
But he couldn’t say for sure what it would do, yet. He needed to go through the rest of the code to be sure—
He needed to know for sure that Tobias’s self had not been torn apart by being fused with Avi. At least… not in a way they couldn’t fix.
Sure, they had a back-up, but…
He dreaded the thought of being forced to resort to using it.
But it was already apparent that Tobias was fragmented and getting data from elsewhere, even though he was not inhabiting his own chassis. If it turned out that this damage was beyond repair… he would have no other choice.]
Mikhail: (Oh, Avi…! What did you DO to him?)
——————————————
Will: Nnngh...
[Much like Mikhail was having troubles of his own, William was feeling rather hopelessly at a loss of what to do himself.]
[...He had hoped that having two separate samples of the Virus—one from Pyro and Cryo—would clear some things up.]
[Instead, it only raised more questions than answers.]
[These samples, while accomplishing their directive, had done so in a MUCH different way than the other. The coding was...so different. So...
....brilliant.]
[...Whoever had coded this KNEW what they were doing.
And they knew it WELL.]
Will: . . .
Will: (This...sinking feeling...)
Will: (The more I stare at this code, the more I want to look away...)
Will: (Why?)
Will: .......
Will: (God, I wish you were here, Mikhail...)
Will: (But with Avi holding the airwaves hostage--who knows when I'll hear from you again?)
[Will sighed heavily, and let the rest of the analysis programs run by themselves for now.]
Will: (—Perhaps another sample is needed...)
Will: (Fortunately...)
Will: (The pattern here is clear enough to give us some idea of where to go next...)
Will: Call?
Call: Yes, Dr. White?
Will: I know that we keep getting interference, but please continue to try and pinpoint the locations of the other Mighty Numbers--and cross reference them with places that their abilities would have the most effect and damage.
Call: Right away. Scanning...
"Will?"
[White looked up from his terminal, his expression twisting into concern as he saw his best friend hurrying across the lab with his phone in his hands.]
Soi: You might wanna take a look at this...
[His phone's screen showed nothing but purple static--and didn't seem to be responsive in any way whatsoever.]
Soi: Either this is Avi's doing or the virus somehow infected cellulars...
Will: Mm...
[Will checked his own—]
Will: ....?
Will: I don't remember shutting mine off...
[Try as he might, he couldn't get it to turn on—]
Will: ......
Will: Wait a minute—
[With an sudden swift movement, Will dug into his shoulder bag—
...And pulled out his charger?]
Will: I must have forgotten...but—
Soi: ...? Will—you do realize this isn't exactly the time to—
Will: I just want to test something, hold on a moment—
[He plugged it in, connected it, and waited for exactly five, tense minutes—
If he was right about this, then—]
[The phone flickered to life—working perfectly.]
Will: Yes!
Soi: —?!
Soi: Wait...how...?
Will: It's just like Call...!
Will: My phone was out of charge when the virus struck—thus it wasn't affected!
Soi: —!
Soi: Huh...that's something, alright. Seems like anything that was shut off at the time this all started wasn't affected...
Will: Yes, since it wasn't connected to any servers at the time. Technological isolation, as it were...
Will: !
[The “New Message” icon pops up.
…And then as it continues to load, a number appears next to it, and climbs higher, and higher… joined by the “Missed Call” symbol and the “New Voicemail” symbol, which also show multiples…]
Will: ......
Will: They're from Mikhail...
[The time frame shows they were placed after 11:46 AM on June 21st, with the last message sent before said Russian actually managed to get a hold of Will some time later.
There are dozens of pictures of lines of code displaying on a mainframe— apparently taken with a phone camera.]
Will: ...?
Will: This code—
Will: (Hrm—can't quite tell what it is...)
[Will then moves to check his voicemails—and puts it on speaker so that Soi could hear as well.]
[NEW MESSAGE FROM: MIKHAIL RECEIVED ON JUNE 21st, 11:49 AM]
“ -Click- Will? Will?”
“{Papa, why won’t he answer?}”
“{Oh no… please be quiet, Princess…}”
“{Papa, I’m scared—! It’s like with… with the /bad man!/ What if my brothers are sick again?!}”
[A pause, and then a click, as he’d hung up.]
Will: (Oh, God, little Kalinka...)
[NEW MESSAGE FROM: MIKHAIL RECEIVED ON JUNE 21st, 12:01 PM]

Will: . . .
[NEW MESSAGE FROM: MIKHAIL TIME STAMP INVALID]
“ -Click- … … …”
[A pause.]
“ -Soft sigh and a groan, faint sound like he’s rubbing his face- {It’s bad, William. It was an aggressive virus. I had to hard reset not only the server, but also all of my sons and the Rebel Angels.}”
[Another pause, before he continues in English, before going back to Russian because he’s too tired right now.]
“The code…. … {It did… some very strange things. …I recorded the raw data with a video camera so I could analyze it later—preferably with you, my God I hope you are alright and get this—without having the actual thing being a squatter in the RMDC.}”
“{I’ve sent over some screenshots I pulled off of that—namely, the initial interaction it had with the server, and the start of some of the consequences in action. I’m still looking it over, but it looks like it activated some very bad cross-references… I’ll have to look closer to tell you which ones.}”
“{It did send them all into Lethal mode—or tried to, anyway—it actually just didn’t work with DCN-000, as his current highest setting is Non-Lethal. …Which isn’t to say he can’t cause damage… it’s just that he doesn’t have… -Groans- I’ll tell you when you call back, please call back, alright?}”
“{I’m going to have Tobias search you out if you don’t respond in 24 hours—I hope that isn’t necessary, but I’m very worried.}”
Will: -winCE-
Soi: Ngh...
“{You needn’t worry about one thing, though—}”
“{It did try to activate the DLN_COMBAT.EXE, but that program never went live in any of the constructs that have access to my server. It activated the DWN_COMBAT.EXE program instead—which I can tell you is something that activates when they are afraid or in great pain… but they have always been defensive. When it went active, they shut down to avoid damage. They are not gone Maverick— so PLEASE, /DON’T/ panic and send Shade over—/}”
Will: .......
[Will just put his head down next to the terminal and groaned. Of course, he had no idea what had happened to the Mighties then...]
“{I really hope I hear back from you soon, Will. We… I need you over here. Some of the interactions…}”
“{The Awareness aspect of the AI_OS—it just can be so… adaptive…. … … … I know you might not think that such a high-tech bit of code from your world could even run in a system as ‘outdated’ as what we use, but the boys… they’ve already long been adapting to data and coding from your children, this…}”
[He trails off.]
“{I won’t let Tobias poke around if I can help it. But for the love of God—
[A click signifies the end of the message.]
[NEW MESSAGE FROM: MIKHAIL TIME STAMP INVALID]
[The next message is much later—it appears to be relatively recent. Right away, it’s pretty apparent that Mikhail is not in good humor.]
“Will, I’m starting to wonder if you even brought your phone back with you from England.”
Will: (S-sorry, Mikhail…)
“I know things ended off rather suddenly, and… I just have to say I’m sorry about what happened. I wish… I wish it could have been another way…”
[There was a drawn out sigh before he continued.]
“Will… Tobias and Avi seem to have fused together.”
Will: -Alarmed- Wh-WHAT?
“We got some data from Avi that we’ll try to analyze, but I don’t know if we’ll get anything useful out of it. This data… I can’t understand all of it, William. Tobias’s Awareness seems to be running somewhere, and is updating his cross-reference memory banks, but… we keep getting errors when we try to bring him Online, because the Awareness is active elsewhere. I can only hazard a guess as to where, but…
You should expect problems from the branch server until the matter is resolved. Tobias was the true master of the database, even though I’m the Admin of my server. I can tell you from experience that if Tobias is trying to protect the main server from getting attacked again, the branch server won’t be able to connect to it. There may be other ways he interferes, if he gets input data that he feels is a threat.”
Will: That… that would explain why he’s blocking their signals…
“I don’t know if I’ll be able to fix this on my own, Will. Not without resorting to his last backup, which had the Awareness software intact.”
Will: (Oh no…)
“But if I do that, that may make things worse in the long run, due to two versions of the Awareness running at the same time. Not to mention the side effects to both Tobias and Avi that we can expect anyway.”
Will: (S-Side Effects...?)
Soi: (That doesn't sound good...)
“We’ll have to talk more after you have Avi back, and try to go from there. As long as he’s an active threat, there will be interference that prevents us from communicating. Please… be careful.”
[Click.]
[…Wait.
There was one more message.]
Will: ...! There's...another...
Soi: Huh—?
"WHA—"
"DAD WHAT ABOUT HIM I HEARD YOU SCREAM—"
[MN.1, 2, AND 9 ARE NOW ONLINE.]
[MN.1] //: -DATA, DID YOU FIND HIM?-
Will: No—hold on—
“J O H N 15:13”
[END OF NEW MESSAGES.]
Will: John 15:13...?
Soi: Why would...?
[MN.2] //: Is it some kinda code, or...?
[MN.1] //: ....
[MN.1] //: "No greater love than this..."
[MN.1] //: "...than to lay down his life for his friends."
[MN.9] //: . . .
[MN.9] //: Cards...
Will: ......
Will: (Cardinal—I pray that you're safe—but PLEASE don't find him before we do...)
Will: (—Your heart's in the right place, but you lack the tools to save him...)
Will: .....
[Will saves the pictures Mikhail took of the coding from the RMDC—and silently thanked him under his breath. He now had three samples to go over and compare—even if the Rebel Angels weren't of Xel, this information could essential to working out the cause of the malfunctions.]
Will: (I hope you're having better luck than me, friend—)

Will: -Looks up- ??
Soi: Wha—
Soi: Did the lights just—

[The air of despair was suffocating. Even Desmond could feel it as he shut the recorder off.
It just didn’t sit right with him—none of it did.]
Des: (Those scars are real, if nothing else. …If it IS a front as part of a cover, he’s sure hellishly dedicated to the job. And if not…?)
Des: (What is he so intent on hiding that he’ll be willing to suffer so much?)
Des: …—! (Oh, right…)
Des: …You have a daughter.
Des: If everyone is Offline, like you said, who’s going to take care of her?
Mikhail: …
Des: ….
Des: If there’s no one else, Doctor, I’ll have to call Social Services.
[Mikhail opened his eyes again with a stern frown.]
Mikhail: (As IF.)
Mikhail: …
Des: …
Des: Do you at least have anyone that can tell her where you’re going?
Mikhail: …
Mikhail: (I left… Jack instructions regarding this.)
Mikhail: (…Bitterly, this is not the first time she and I have gone through this…)
Mikhail: (She shouldn’t have to understand, she is a child, but…)
Mikhail: (She does.)
Mikhail: (After what we’ve been through, she does…)
Des: …..
Des: -Sigh-
[He seemed to be thinking on this as Desmond opened the door to take him out into the hall.]
((Pic—Mikhail & Des (arrested) ))
Mikhail: …I didn’t bring her with me. She’s with some family friends where she’ll be safe.
Des: ….Who?
Mikhail: I won’t talk about that right now. I don’t want anyone else knowing where she is. I don’t know who else is listening or who will be told, and we just had a call from CherryDyn—
Des: -Freezes- What?
Mikhail: -Dryly- Remember what I said about trouble with public relations? I’m afraid I lost my patience when the CEO called, after all the grief he’s caused this family. He knows that I’m aware of the link and trying to prove it. Given that Greater Dusk itself has been all but eliminated, I would not put it past him or his subordinates to go after my daughter before/as part of going after me. The danger may persist for some time yet.
Des: You... (What in the world were you THINKING, Doctor? At a time like THIS?)
Mikhail: -Snaps at the tone- Yes, I know, but what more do I have to lose at this point? He scares me a lot less than YOU do, Mister Secretary!
Des: …
[He gave a sharp huff and then calmed down.]
Mikhail: …I'm sorry. But I can only see darkness closing in, with no escape.
Mikhail: As long as she's safe, the rest doesn't matter… not anymore…. {There is no hope left for me here.}
Des: …
Mikhail: It’s very important to me that she stays safe, but it is easily a secondary importance that you are able to have access to the truth. There is evil within that company, and there are multiple people I know personally that have suffered because of it. There must be countless “nameless” if that is the case. So… we should go pick that up, at least. My notes are in the lab. Do try not to bother the others at their work. If we’re quiet, we should be able to leave without raising up a panic.
[His expression softened.]
Mikhail: …There’s someone you need to see there anyway.
Des: (…DLN-000…)
Des: (…Why would Graham call Sanda Tech, at a time like this–)
[CRASH–]
Mikhail: ?!
“AH’ SAID LEMMIE GO–”
[Just down the hallway’s intersection was Shade, struggling to push himself forward despite Avi and Beck clinging to his legs, and Pyro trying to restrain him–the other Mighties were worryingly trailing behind.]
Avi: BRO COME ON STOP IT–
Shade: -In near hysterics- AH’ SAID NO, UNCLE MIKHAIL’S IN TROUBLE–
Des: ( “Uncle”? And how—)
Beck: But he’s right there–
Beck: –!
Beck: H…Huh?
Mikhail: Countershade Arthur White! You should BE IN BED! =__=
[It was clear Mikhail was not happy to be seen in his current condition.]
Des: How did he–
[SLAM–]
[At the opposite end of the hallway, a door is heard slamming shut, and a rapid pair of footsteps following suit.
Soi had just enough time to yank Will back by his lab coat into a restraining hug, who looked absolutely livid.]
Will: YOU’RE NOT GOING TO TAKE HIM AWAY–!
Soi: WILL CALM DOWN–
Mikhail: -Would be BURNING IN SHAME if we weren’t so damn TIRED—-
Des: ???????? (How is it they all KNOW?!) -Looks back and forth- (…Crap wait the Mighties are behind us and the Doctors are in front of us–)
“ENOUGH.”
Beck: –!
Beck: Felix–?
[FELIX used HALT!]
Shade: –?!
Des: (What the–I can’t move–?!)
Will: –!!
Beck: (Ngh…Can’t move…)
Des: (How in the world–I can’t even look to see who did that, what is–??)
Dyna: -BZZ BZZ, HEY, CAN’T MOVE–
Cryo: -YO WHAT THE GLITCH IS GOING ON, WHY IS UNCLE MIKHAIL IN HANDCUFFS, WHY DOES DAD LOOK REALLY TICKED OFF, WHY CAN’T WE MOVE-
[Felix strode into view. Like Mikhail, he walked with an alpha gait—a bold leadership that DEMANDED obedience from lessers, respect from equals, and recognition from superiors.
He looked annoyed.]
Felix: I want answers as to why I was told to deliver medical aid, and ended up arriving on a developing fight scene. And no violence.
[He released Desmond, Mikhail, Sanda, and Brandish from the Halt.]
Felix: Talk.
Soi: –Oof–
Brand: -We are honestly just as confused as you are-
Des: Ngh…
Felix: -Glares!-
Des: –!
Des: (What the…Who IS he?)
Des: -Ow-
Des: Doctor Cossack is being brought in for more questioning–
Beck: (What–?!)
Soi: But–weren’t you just–
Mikhail: … -Looks away and sighs-
Mikhail: (Dammit, I didn’t want any of you to SEE me like this…)
Mikhail: (Cripes is this humiliating.)
Will: -ATTEMPTS TO STRUGGLE, nope, can’t move–Mikhaaaaaail–
Brand: …
Brand: (…No wonder Father is so worked up.)
Brand: Can you not question him here further?
Des: -…Looks at Mikhail-
Des: ….
Mikhail: …It doesn’t appear that is going to be given as an option.
Des: There’s still things he needs to answer for.
Des: (And THEN some.)
Brand: …. -Also glares-
Brand: And you expect to leave this building without some kind of explanation to us?
Des: –….
Mikhail: -Warning tone- Brandish—
Brand: Besides.
Brand: Cardinal still needs repairs. You are quite literally taking away the help he needs.
[Mikhail scowled as he scolded Brand.]
Mikhail: Shame on you, Brandish. You know full well that Nineteen can handle the rest of the repairs. Do not try to guilt trip the man, it’s already hard enough on the both of us as it is.
Brand: ….
Brand: >>
Mikhail: There are consequences to keeping secrets. This is one of them.
Will: (Ngh–)
Mikhail: Given what probably would have happened if I had told the full truth before he met Felix, I prefer this option. -_-;
Des: (The full truth?)
Mikhail: (Prison I can deal with. Torture, even. I’ve been through both before. And even as hellish as those are, at least what you say will be seen as truth or lies…)
Mikhail: (As opposed to an asylum, where EVERYTHING is taken to be madness.)
Brand: ….
Brand: …I apologize for my deceit, it’s just…
Brand: >> (Seeing you like this is rather…hurtful…)
Des: This–
Soi: Er–
Soi: I–I hate to interrupt, but we REALLY don’t have time to talk.
Soi: There’s a situation that requires all hands on deck–
Beck: (–?)
Mikhail: -Looks over at Sanda- So you really are sending them out? : /
Brand: –?
Soi: ….Do we really have a choice? We do not want the city or the lab overrun with infected robots again–
Brand: What?
Beck: (–!!)
Mikhail: Then… Felix, I need you to go back to the Meadow. Have Jaden and Carlos sent over.
Felix: … And your sons?
Mikhail: Let them rest. -Looks over at Des, then down at his handcuffs briefly before returning his attention to Felix- I don’t want them getting angry.
Des: Wait–
Soi: Er, Felix, before you go, uh…
[He gestured to the Halted others with a tilt of his head.]
Shade: B /
Felix walked over to Shade and looked at him with a frown.]
[His thoughts went back to the visions he had suffered—the agony he had seen.]
Felix: …
[But he knew better than to bring that up, especially now.]
Felix: … Don’t do anything too rash, Countershade.
Shade: -We thought he was in danger, alright, can ya please let us go, we’re gettin’ uncomfortably stiff here-
Brand: How did you even know?
Shade: -Watch signal-
Brand: –….
Des: ….Watch? -Aaaand looks at Mikhail-
Des: (I thought I completely disarmed him–)
Des: (He’s in his PJ’s, for crying out loud–)
[Mikhail was equally surprised.]
Mikhail: …It does that?
Shade: -Data- -Sends distress signal t’ the server and me if heart rate is above normal stress levels for too long-
Shade: -…..-
Shade: -In hindsight Ah’ should’ve given ya a rundown of the functions, sorry ‘bout that-
Brand: -______-;;;;;;
Des: …..
Des: (What is going ON around here??)
Des: (I thought the Doctor said they were just his children’s friends, yet…)
Beck: -Nnnngh, Feeeeliiiix can you please let us go, it sounds like there’s trouble–
[Felix releases them.]
Mikhail: Thank you. Now Desmond, please, my notes are still in the lab, and we have a power core to deliver.
Will: …..
Will: (Mikhail…)
Will: ….
Des: ….
[As much as Desmond wanted answers, he knew he wasn’t going to be getting any right at this moment. Especially with Dr. White silently glaring at him like that.]
Des: …Fine…
Soi: R-Right–Mighties? We need a quick briefing. We don’t have a lot of time.
Soi: Come on, Will…
Will: …..
Will: -Sigh-
[As the Whites and Sanda all file into the meeting room, there is a thick air of both tension and confusion--as well as still simmering anger from some members of the family.]
Soi: -Ahem—-
Soi: I know some of us are...Er...not in the best of moods...
Will: -Nnn...-
Brand: -Cold, glaring data-
Shade: -...-
Cyro: Yeeeeaaaah, no chill, definitely--
Shade: -Please don't.-
Pyro: Don't snap at your sister, Eight.
Shade: -Mmnf...-
[The second youngest of the Mighties grumbled and leaned his full weight against his largest elder brother--Mic, who was more than happy to provide support.]
Mic: -It's okay, Mic confused too.-
Shade: Tell me about it...
Shade: What the yappin' hell does CherryDyn want with us?
Shade: An' why is Uncle Mikhail under arrest?
Soi: >>....
Will: -Siiigh- Shade...
Will: I swear we will explain later. But right now we need to focus on the situation at hand.
Shade: ...
Soi: ...
Soi: << Will...
Soi: Are you sure this is a good idea?
Soi: Last time he fought Cardinal, he was out for three days, and he just fought Cardinal AND Beck…
Shade: -Hn...-
Shade: ...m'fahn.
Will: ...Son...
Shade: M'fahn, Dad.
Brand: ....
Beck: -Ping!-
Beck: Whatever's going on that CherryDyn had to call us has to be really important.
Beck: I can heal up Shade and myself if he needs it. And we do have the supplies from the Meadow.
Will: ...
Will: (...true...we do still have that supply of E-Tanks...)
Beck: What's the situation?
[Beck seemed very focused--and didn't waste time getting straight to the point.]
Soi: There's a massive malfunction at CherryDyn's Robot Factory. Their defenses were overwhelmed--and now their automated systems are infected with the virus.
Bat: ...Automated, ya say?
Will: Correct.
Will: The factory operates completely on it's own--and it's now generating infected units and unleashing them into the city. We have to stop it.
Dyna: -Bzzzt- Are you sure thiszzz isn't another one of their intentional zzzscrew upszz—
Dyna: -Points a clawed finger at her father- They wanted uszzz to clean up the messzz in Highway Delta too and go catch the Deszztroyer while we're at it!
Beck: (Urk—!)
Beck: -Quickly changes the subject—- Th-That could be true—but—!
Beck: It doesn't really matter, the city's in danger either way!
Beck: <<;; Even if they are really mean...
Will: ...
Soi: R-Right! This is the largest Robot Factory in California--if it isn't stopped, we'll be drowning in infected bots by the end of the day.
Soi: Now--this factory is big, and I mean big. This is going to take all of you to take it on--and while most of CherryDyn's Industrial units are made there, they're no match for all 9 of you!
Will: ...12.
Soi: --Ah, right...
Brand: --?
Will: Jaden and Speedy will be joining you.
Beck: !
Beck: : D! Really?!
[As if on cue, there was a swirl of colored spheres as Felix teleported in with both of the aforementioned Second Gens. They were in their partial battle armor, eyes glowing faint green in alert preparation.]
Beck: Jaden! Speedy! : D!! -HI GUYS--
Cryo: -AW YEAH, MORE FIREPOWER—-
Shade: -Mnnn....-
Cryo: -Oh come on, that wasn't even a pun—-
[Felix quietly slipped off, heading for the lab.]
Jaden: Yeah, we're… happy to help, but…
Speedy: What is going on, exactly?
Avi: -PING!-
Avi: Breaking News: CherryDyn Catastrophe at Compromised Factory!
Avi: ... Basically we gotta go clean up their mess. -Eye roll-
Jaden: Wha— again?
Bat: -Grunt- As much as I hate to admit it, yes. Their factory's gone haywire.
Shade: -Annoyed data, can't we just deal with the bots themselves.-
Speedy: -Looks around- …
Speedy: ?
Speedy: I don't get it.
Will: It's better to take it out at the source--otherwise we'd only be fighting wave after wave of infected Industrials.
Speedy: No, not that.
Will: --?
Speedy: If we're going on a field trip to trash a CherryDyn landmark…
Speedy: Where's Cardinal?
Shade: -Hnnn...-
[No, don't, don't—]
Shade: (Cards...!)
Mic: -Data, shhhh...-
Will: ...
[...well, THERE was a drop in mood if any...]
Will: ...
Will: ...Cardinal is still undergoing repairs.
Will: He's in no condition to go. And--
Will: Since this is nothing short of a full scale assault, with several Combat bots capable of causing widespread damage...
Will: You two are more suited to this given the current circumstances.
Jaden: …
Jaden: -Slightly coldly for him, head bowed a little- So. That was why we were given filler data.
Shade: (...nnn...M'sorry, Ah'...Ah'...)
Brand: ....
Jaden: -Softly now- I understand, now. I'm sorry it had to be like this.
[When he looks up again, his eyes are bright green. He looks over at Shade with a piercing gaze.
Shade very much looked like he wanted to sleep, or at the very least, turn invisible--but he didn't.]
Shade: (Ah' tried, Ah' did, Ah' swear—!)
Beck: Jaden--
[But no. Jaden was not enraged.]
Jaden: You look terrible. You should be in bed. ,': |
Shade: -Nnn...-
Shade: Ah' know. | [
Speedy: -Shifts his weight- Are you seriously coming with us?
Speedy: We can see about getting Nico to come over if you guys need more firepower so that you can rest—
Shade: -We are fahn—-
Beck: -Interrupts- --And the factory's systems are infected. Either I need to purge it or help destroy it.
Beck: I am not letting everyone go there without me.
Beck: I've made up my mind, Speedy.
Speedy: -Holds up his hands- Fair enough, Mighty Nine. Never doubted you for a minute there.
Beck: (...huh. That...didn't take much...)
Beck: (Thought I needed to argue for a sec there...)
Speedy: But if you insist on bringing along your sniper after he's gotten his life wrung out of him…
Speedy: -Toss!-
[Brandish smoothly catches the E-Tank thrown at him, not once taking his eyes off of Shade.]
Brand: ...
Speedy: Might want to give some of that vitality back.
Brand: ...Yes.
Brand: -Tosses to Mic-
Mic: -w-
[Mic doesn't even wait for an answer--he just pops it open and pours the contents over Shade's head, which does make him jolt up a bit.]
Shade: -OI, give a guy a warnin' next tahm—-
Mic: -w-b
Beck: -Snorts-
[He's dry afterwards, though, his systems already absorbing the contents of the E-Tank. Shade stands on his own now--inner turmoil still brewing within, but at least he wasn't ready to keel over.]
Shade: -Let's just get this over already-
Beck: ...yeah...
Soi: Alright then--I'll be uploading a map of the factory for you all to go over, as well as the points to hit hardest. Will's got the plan of attack all figured out, so--
[PING!]
[WARNING. WARNING.]
[Alarms suddenly go off all over the building--!]
Beck: --?!
Will: What—what now—?!
Speedy: Are we under attack or something??
[TITUS CITY AREA IS NOW IN CONDITION RED. TITUS CITY AREA IS NOW IN CONDITION RED. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.]
Bat: —!!
Pyro: Again—?!
[PING!]
[CALL] //: Attention: All individuals in the building please report to the main lab. Attention: All individuals please report to the main lab.
[CALL] //: We have another situation in development.
Will: Good Lord it NEVER ends—!
Will: Quickly! Everyone to the lab this instant!
[When Mikhail, Des, and Felix got there, The Mighty Numbers were gathered around the main screen, which had two live feeds.]
[One was of the main entrance of the CherryDynamics Factory, blown wide open. CherryDyn Models were pouring out by the dozens.]
[And the other feed…]
Speedy: Holy glitch is that a PRISON?!
Will: ….
Will: …Yes.
Will: There’s been a break-in.
Jaden: Seriously? At a time like THIS? Who would want to break INTO a prison?
Mikhail: ({—! No—! They DIDN’T—!}) Where are my sons?!
Jaden: Hmm? They’re still aslee— -Turns around-
Jaden: —!!!
<DWN-013 has entered Defensive Combat mode.>
[His full battle armor rapidly shifted into place. He looked scared.]
Jaden: HOLY glitch, Doctor WHY ARE YOU TIED UP—
Speedy: -Whirls around, shifting also and taking a defensive battle stance out of instinct as he speaks in alarm- Wait, what?!
Des: I’ll uncuff him later!
Des: What is going ON?!
Call: CherryDynamic’s Robot Factory has been mass producing infected models at an alarming rate.
Call: There has also been a reported break-in at the maximum security Prison, and all communication with them has been lost.
Call: CherryDyn Models have also been reported trying to swarm the Prison.
Will: …
Mikhail: What? Why? Who’s being kept there?
Will: ….
Will: Dr. Benedict Blackwell.
Mikhail: … What?
Mikhail: -Now just CONFUSED- I though we discussed this a long, long time ago—
Mikhail: Who would want to go after him? This can’t be his doing. You said he’s been there for ages, and even Dr. Wily isn’t THAT patient! After Rock finally corners him a second time, he’ll only wait a few months before—
Mikhail: … (Wait— he… w-will…?!)
[He doubled over in a sudden, overwhelming headache, with the Robot Masters present doing likewise. Felix managed to catch Mikhail before he hit the ground, despite being alarmed and startled—but Jaden and Speedy were not so lucky.]
Will: –!!
Will: Mikhail–?!
Beck: Guys?!
Jaden: Ow… (Feel like I had the wind knocked right out of me…)
Mikhail: Ghh… gah… not this again…
Will: (–?? Again–?)
Mikhail: This… this happened… or will happen… before…
Felix: Side note—Master Desmond knows the truth now.
Will: ……I…see.
Des: ….
Will: (…Ngh…)
Speedy: Ugh, worry about Dad and what he WILL do in the future later—let’s deal with the now, what do we do?
Will: Mngh…. (…. They’re not going to like this.)
Will: We now have not one, but two major situations we must deal with.
Beck: So we split up?
Will: No.
Will: At least, not you, Mighties.
Jaden: …What? Surely you don’t plan to send us off away from them. -Looks over at Desmond nervously- What if we’re… stopped, and…?
Speedy: -Suddenly notices, and seems to freeze up, then look pained- We’re not gonna get experimented on, are we? The first time people took me apart for science was bad enough.
Des: | /;;;; -No, and frankly we are rather appalled at that notion-
Will: That’s, um… not quite what I meant, you two.
Pyro: –?
Will: You’re more effective as an entire team, rather than in two parts. Not only that, but you have the endurance and skill needed for combat on a massive scale.
Will: It’s only logical that you all will be sent to the Factory. There’s no telling how many infected models are on site.
Will: …Not only that—
Jaden: But—!
Jaden: Doctor, that’s a contagion hazard! D:
Speedy: Oh, shut up, Beck’s on our side and you can tank anything anyway.
Jaden: Why take that risk, brother?! After everything that’s happened?! What do you think would happen if—! What would that do to them?!
Jaden: You and I are immune and make to take this sort of fight—we can handle ourselves! If we must split ways—
Will: Jaden.
Will: I...I know the risks, but the very fate of Titus lies in this. I won't split this family apart anymore than it has this past week. We see this through, together. We will overcome this, together.
Will: ...As..
Will: As long as you do not let any infected Xel into your systems, you all should be fine.
Will: I’ll also be implementing a prototype XelFilter.EXE program into our server before I go.
Beck: ….
Beck: Go?
Mikhail: {What?} Will, what— go where?
Will: ….
Will: CherryDynamics’s Robot Factory is all automated.
Will: The way the system is set up, it can produce models with little to no human help.
Will: Because of this, any and all changes to their Manufacturing Operator Mainframe– The M.O.M units…
Will: …Must be done on site.
Will: Though a certain, mainframe terminal with the ONLY authorized access.
Mikhail: —…
Mikhail: And… you’ve already determined there’s no one else— that’s why it took time, even after I left…
Mikhail: …
Felix: (I hope he doesn’t demand to take Will’s place. I don’t know much about the machines of this world, but I DO know that he’s going to make himself sick if he doesn’t get some rest very soon.)
Mikhail: At least take the sensory defense mechanism with you, Will!
Mikhail: I’m begging you—
Mikhail: You and Sanda are the ONLY friends I have ever since we were relocated in the protection program! PLEASE don’t get yourself hurt!
Pyro: Father–
Beck: Dad, wait–
Mikhail: Boys!
Mikhail: There’s an American saying you people have. “A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do.”
Mikhail: He wouldn’t be doing this unless he knew it were the best option—we don’t have time for further delay! Mighties, Angels—get ready to go, you must act quickly!
Beck: ….
Beck: –But what about the Prison?
Will: Sanda’s going there with Call.
Soi: Yes, of–
Soi: Wait, WHAT?!
Felix: -sNORTS-
Will: Sanda.
Will: I know I ask too much of you…
Will: But if someone is going after Blackwell, someone must go and ensure his safety.
Will: …As well as get some answers, if any.
[Speedy gave a loud, annoyed ping of disagreement.]
Speedy: You want answers from him?
[He points at Mikhail (who is standing to the right of him) using both hands, without even looking over. He maintains eye contact with Will the whole time.]
Speedy: Try having him talk to the guy! We’ve more or less known for ages that Blackwell went nuts for the same reasons my Dad did! : /
Will: I will NOT put any more in danger than I HAVE to, Speedy.
Will: …..
Will: …Soi…
Will: If…
Will: If you really don’t feel like you can, I–
Soi: ….Ngh.
Soi: …W-Well…Under the circumstances, I…Suppose this is the only way to talk to Blackwell…Hoorf…
Soi: A…Are you sure you don’t want to swap missions? ^^;;;
Will: You want to go to a factory full of infected robots instead?
Soi: –….
Will: (…Besides.)
Will: (I would prefer it if I NEVER have to see or hear of Blackwell ever again for the rest of my life.)
Des: Are you kidding me–
Des: This is INSANE, you’re civilians, you can’t just–!
Will: On the contrary, Mr. Desmond.
Will: I am not as helpless as I appear to be.
Will: I have means to defend myself.
Des: –…
Will: Brandish?
Brand: –Yes, Father?
Will: Remember that box I gave you? Before you left to train?
Will: The wooden one.
Brand: Yes…?
Will: Please bring it to me.
Mikhail: I still insist you take the sensory device mechanism with you. >>
Will: I didn’t say no, Mikhail. -Chuckles-
[Mikhail walks over and slings his arms over Will’s head to pull him into a hug—as much of a hug he can, given his current condition.]
Will: –!
Mikhail: Be careful out there, alright?
Will: ….
Will: Eheh….
Will: I will.
Will: I have the world’s top fighting team on my side, don’t I? ^^
Cryo: -YEAH I’LL PUNCH ANYONE THAT TRIES TO HURT NOODLE DAD-
Mikhail: -Grins, pulling his arms up and over again to release his friend- And then some. I think you will all be surprised at what Jaden can take and what Speedy can do.
Jaden: As long as Avi doesn’t get me caught in a crosswind unfriendly fire, I can take just about anything.
Jaden: …
Jaden: …I wish Cardinal could come with us.
Will: ….So do I.
[A moment later, Brandish returns with the box in question.]
[…It’s a stained black wooded box. It almost looked solid with no visible way to open it.]
Will: Ah…
Soi: –!
Soi: Wait a sec…
Brand: ….
Brand: You told me to never open it unless I was in real danger.
Speedy: Bro, I’m pretty sure now qualifies. >>;
Will: Yes…
Beck: ?
Beck: But what’s in it?
Will: Hmm…
[Will runs his hands over it, an almost…Far away look in his eyes.]
Will: (…I never thought I’d have to use this again.)
Will: (Or if I even… Remember how…)
Will: Soi…
Soi: –!
[The box suddenly opened–either by voice or by some hidden mechanic only Will knew, was hard to say.]
[Inside was some kind of…]
[… Rapier handle?]
Soi: (…You still kept that–?)
Speedy: …
Speedy: Is that a classy light saber, or—
Will: -Laughs-
Will: Not quite, but that’s a good guess!
[With one hand behind his back, Will grasped the handle.]
[As if by magic, Xel began to appear out of the hole where the blade should Be–slowly settling into that very sharp steel-like point.]
Will: I must admit, I…
Will: …Haven’t quite fenced in a while…
Brand: ….
Brand: You knew how to FENCE and you didn’t tell me–
Will: Eheh…
Will: Oops? ^^;;
Felix: …
Felix: -I want to spar—-
Brand: -So do I–
Soi: -SNORTS-
Soi: Ah, ah! I’d think twice if I were you!
Soi: -Pats Will on the shoulder- Will here won the National Collegiate Fencing Tournament for FIVE years running!
Beck: WHAT–
Will: I, uh…Eheh. That was college, Soi…
Soi: -STILL COUNTS-
Felix: And I trained under Proxan Warriors for five years, give—
[Mikhail gives a hearty laugh.]
Mikhail: You boys can have all the spars you could want once this nightmare is over. Felix, you and Brand are next, if I remember correctly?
Brand: -Winner gets to face Father-
Felix: -DEAL-
Mikhail: Go on. Go out there and end this, to make those happy days once again a reality.
Des: -You guys are NUTS-
Will: Mikhail…
Will: I trust you’ll hold down the lab while we’re gone.
Felix: -Brought back to the now at this- -Frowns- …
Mikhail: I’ll do my best. Mr. Desmond, will you help me with that?
Des: I…don’t really have a choice…
[RING!]
Des: –? (That’s my cell–)
Des: -Takes out phone–
Des: –….
Des: (Oh.)
[CALL FROM: MINNIE MOUSE]
Mikhail: …
Mikhail: ???
Des: Uh.
Des: I have to take this—
Des: Good luck!

[Cryo was met with welcoming arms and tears of relief, both from her father and her Uncle Sanda. A good while had passed before Will was reminded by his best friend that he couldn't repair his daughter while he was constantly hugging her--]
[And so, just as before, everyone got to work. Sanda was left to repair Cryo while Will went to work analyzing the virus sample from her.]
[...This time, however, Pyro took it upon himself to explain what the situation was.]
[It wasn't very long before...]
Cryo: I'M SORRY--
Pyro: I know.
Cryo: I DON'T HATE YOU--
Pyro: I know.
Cryo: BECKYYYYYYYYY--
[Beck, of course, took a moment from self-repair to come and comfort his sister.]
[--He couldn't get one word in before hose arms started to wrap around his neck and pulled him in an embrace.]
Cryo: I'M SOOORRYYYYYY--
[Beck...well, at first, he was quite taken aback--he's never really SEEN his sister cry like this.]
[...But the surprise is only there for a moment.]
Beck: It's OK, Big Sis...
Cryo: -WAILS-
[Pyro simply rubs the top of her head, twangs of regret and pain in his optics. Eventually he had to call Father to help calm her down.]
Cryo: -SNIFF- daddyyy...
White: Shhh....it's alright, Cryo, everything will be fine...
Cryo: ...B--...but--sis....and...
[And then another wail escapes her.]
White: I know, I know--I....
[......]
White: I know....
Beck: Cryo--
Beck: Dad's working on finding a way to beat this virus--and I'm gonna get everyone back.
Cryo: ...-sniff-
Beck: You'll see--
Beck: We're all gonna be back together soon. We just gotta tough this out, OK?
Beck: So no more waterworks. ^.^
[......]
Cryo: ....-snort-
Cryo: G...Good one, bro...
Cryo: -SNIFF-
White: Rest while Sanda gets to work on repairing you and your tank--I need to get back to analysis.
Cryo: -sniff- OK, Daddy...
Pyro: I'll look after her.
[White nods, and hurries back to his terminal. A few ticks of the keyboard brings up the still-working analysis programs...]
White: Call, transfer the assimilated data over to me.
Call: Yes, Dr. White.
White: Now that I have two samples to compare, this will hopefully give us some more insight--
[PING!]
"DAD?? I THINK IT'S HAPPENING AGAIN--"
[ASSIMILATED XEL DATA SCAN COMPLETE.]
[REARRANGING XEL STRUCTURE...]
[REXELECTION: CRYOSPHERE]
"WHOOOOOA THAT WAS AWESOME--"
"That was...much more...different than the first time she gave it to you--"
"YEAH IT WAS WITHOUT THE LIGHT SHOW."
Cryo: BRO--BRO WHAT'S WITH THE FANCY LIGHT SHOW--
Beck: I--well...
[As Beck begins to explain his newfound abilities--much to Cryo's delight--White hums deeply in thought.]
[It was true--the lights that emitted from his Xels were not present when he acquired his siblings' powers before.]
White: (Interesting...)
White: ....Hmm.
Call: Dr. White.
White: Yes, Call?
Call: I detect a significant rise in your heart rate and vitals. Is something wrong?
White: .....
White: I'm just...nervous. Given the situation.
Call: ....
Call: Acknowledged. I will adjust the room temperature and atmosphere so that you may calm down.
White: ....Thank you, that would be nice.
White: ........
White: (Could Beck...)
White: (No--he CAN'T be. Not THIS soon...)
White: (He's not NEARLY as ready...)
White: (....Though...)
White: (The better question would be if WE would be ready...)
White: (...Gah, I shouldn't be thinking like that NOW, of all times...)
White: (I've GOT to crack this code--before it's too late...)
"Phone call for you."
"......"
"Hey. PHONE CALL--"
"I heard you the first time."
"Tch. Jeez, old man. Don't think anyone would be using THIS frequency ever again..."
".....So it's him."
"Yup."
"Do you wanna answer...?"
"......."
"Uh....P-2045453?"
"I have a NAME."
"Sorry. Warden's orders."
"...Hmph."
"Hang up."
"That's gonna waste your one phone call for the day."
"I do not care. It's not like anyone calls me besides conspiracy theorists and crazed lunatics."
"....Yeah, you do get some loonies over the phone, huh..."
"But--I REALLY don't think you wanna hang up on the president of CherryDyn."
"........."
"Do I need to tell you twice?"
"......Oookaaaay, but I'm pretty sure he's gonna call back regardless--and I gotta come back here every time to let you know, so."
"........."
"....Uh--P-20--"
[A low, grating growl.]
"UH--I--I-mean--D-- Dr. Blackwell..."
"........"
"....Doctor...?"

"........I...I'm just gonna leave--uh, last meal of the day is in half an hour."

[It is the year 20XX. Breakthroughs in robotic technology have ushered in a new era of peace and prosperity. Violence is confined to the Battle Colosseum, where robot combatants face off in spectacular duels. The sport has become a worldwide favorite, and elite competitors regularly rise to the challenge to garner glory… or else fall from favor.
Of all the world’s combat teams, the Mighty Numbers are recognized as the best of the best. The family was famous worldwide, and often attended exclusive events to defend their status. One such event—the Queen’s Tournament in England—had just come to a close. Now, the family was finally on the way home.]
Will: -Sighs as he looks at the folder full of papers- … (I don’t like working with sensitive material outside the office, but I should probably at least review some of these…)
[They had risen through the ranks and claimed their rightful status as champions and victors, but it hadn’t come without cost. The final match of the tournament had been held against team Greater Dusk: a notorious gang headed by an assassin.]
Will: -Pauses at the pile of newspaper clippings- (Oh, right… they must be interested in the coverage and how pervasive the search is…. I guess Avi put together these for their records.)
[The match had quickly turned from a touted title match to a deadly fight for their lives when most of the opposing team had become overtaken by a bizarre “berserker” mode, becoming insanely aggressive and losing their free will to the madness. The situation came to a climax when Dynatron, the electric diva, had been taken hostage by Bladeblaster…
…who was subsequently attacked by an inexplicable mysterious visitor.]
Will: -Frowns, flipping past printed copies of notifications from various federal authorities in London and New York, all of which were marked “VOID” by Shade’s Certified Assassins' League stamp- (At least everyone made it out safely…. Thank God Dynatron is alright. There’s no way they’ll ever find Tobias, and Kate is taking care of Jack even as we speak…)
[In truth, the young man who had intervened was not a Xelbot at all—but rather, a robot from another world entirely!]
Will: (Mikhail said that he had something to tell me about the finals… I wonder what it was?)
[For several years up to that point, the Mighty Numbers had been made aware of portals to other worlds. It was on one such fantastic adventure that they met a family of robots (known as “Robot Masters” in their native world) and become good friends.]
Will: -Snorts as he comes across these news clippings- (Oh, I remember this night... it's a little less than you TRULY deserve, Graham, so you really should be thankful—not that you're smart enough to figure out who really did this.)
Will: (At least they didn’t get in trouble. I’m glad Graham didn’t even try to pin that on us…)
Will: (Lord knows he’s been willing to do that every time else…)
[They had seen many adventures together, and it wasn’t only the robots who had made friends: the Doctors had, too. For the first time in ages, Dr. William White had made a friend—a human person he could trust…
…Well. About as much as he could trust anyone, other than his good friend and colleague, Doctor Soichiro Sanda, at any rate.]
Will: …
Will: (Ah, Kate’s notes! Oh dear—I think these are in code…) -Squints-
[The events of the Queen’s Finals (as they’d taken to calling the last four matches, and the championship match in particular) had left a lot of loose ends and many questions. The nature of the infected crosses that had caused the madness remained an uneasy mystery… one which had driven another friend of theirs to investigate the matter personally.]
[Unfortunately, he had only fallen into a sleep born of deep sickness, himself.]
Will: … (Still no word of Felix getting better. Oh, Felix… I do hope you are alright. Sounds like Jack is doing better, which is a relief. The poor man took a sawblade right to the spine when he stood up to his boss. But…) -Grips the paper tighter, pressing his mouth into a thin line- (I’m not sure if this bit about a “provider” is code…. If Bladeblaster was a CherryDyn construct, wouldn’t that company be their “provider”? That’s what it looked like when we investigated, at any rate. And…) -Narrows his eyes- (I really don’t like this bit about Bladeblaster apparently faking his death…. But of course it would be like Graham to cover his tracks like that, now wouldn’t it…)
[Tobias had made a public, international spectacle of himself. The Mighty Numbers had been bombarded with questions from all sides, not the least of which had been uncomfortable inquiries from federal authorities. Thankfully, the team’s sniper—Mighty No. 8: Countershade—was himself a member of the Certified Assassins’ League, and was able to pull some strings to get people to back off. He’d grown very tired and irritated in the process, though, as he’d been forced to take most of the heat… and was, as a result, openly short-tempered and snappy.]
Will: (I wouldn’t be surprised if he slept for several days once we get home… if it weren’t for the fact we have a match immediately after.) -Flips through the notes- —…
Will: -Stops and smiles at a picture of Beck’s birthday-
[The happy days with their friends seemed so far off after several months abroad. But soon they would be back home. They could celebrate missed birthdays, resume the friendly spars—after ending off on such a high note, with the exciting matches between Beck vs Echo and Cardinal vs Countershade!—and put all this gloomy mess behind them.]
Will: (I know how much the Mighties have been looking forward to bringing home the trophy, like they’d promised. I’m sure the Rebel Angels are excited, too….)
DING!
“This is your captain speaking. If you look out to your left, you can see the lovely New York City skyline as we approach…”
Will: (O-oh—) -Fumbles for phone- (Mother wanted me to call her as soon as we came stateside, even if it was an odd hour—) …
Will: -Mutters- Oops… forgot to charge, aheh… -Scratches head slightly, ruffling his afro- (With all the stress Dyna’s been under, I should have remembered to double check all the devices before landing. Wouldn’t be surprised if my laptop was drained as well…. I’ll have to recharge everything when we get home.)
Will: (Ah well! We’ll be home soon, at last! And that’s something to celebrate.)
[After all, they were more than a team: they were a family. And nothing could keep the Mighty Numbers down for long.]

[After speaking with Seijiro… Beck, Soichiro, William, and Call did a thorough search of the lower levels of the building Soi was sealed in. To their surprise, they had found a couple of uninfected Patch bots that were busy recharging their energy--their systems also had to be shut down to do so.]
Sunny: D: -BEEP BEEP I AM SCARED WHAT IS HAPPENING WHY ARE THERE EXPLODING NOISES -
Beck: Sunny! : D -shhhh it's OK everything is fine--or will be--
White: (Interesting...these Patches are also fine, like Call...)
[Meanwhile, Call had moved her usual terminal to the lab, and began bringing back the labs systems one by one with her father.]
Sanda: If we can just get this one back up, we can start looking for the rest of the Mighties...
[Beck perked up from his spot on the floor, a bit busy consoling about six or seven different colored Patches.]
Beck: ...How are we gonna do that?
[White frowned and put his hand to his chin, thinking.]
White: Hmm...
Sanda: ...! Ah! That should do it--for now, at least. At any rate, the lab is all set for any repairs Beck and the others might need.
White: Good, good...
White: . . .
White: We can still read most of their statuses, yes?
Sanda: Hmm, yes...
White: Can we trace back their transponders?
Sanda: We can give it a try, but with Avi messing around with the signals...
Call: Tracing...
[A map of the US comes up.]
Call: .......
Call: Transponder found.
White: --!!! Whose?
[A marker appeared right smack in the middle of the State of Louisiana.]
[A symbol. Pyrogen's. ]
Beck: ! Big Brother...!
Call: Comparing location to local database....
Call: .......
Sanda: Well?!
Call: ....
Call: It appears that Mighty No. 1 has retreated to an oil refinery.
White: An OIL--?!
Sanda: Good God--He's going to blow it all up to kingdom come--!
White: Quickly--there is no time to waste! Beck, Call, prepare yourselves for the mission--Sanda, find another signal frequency for Xel Transfer, something we don't use as often so that Avi won't pick it up at first--I'll set up encryptions to hide it from him in the meantime from my own terminal!
Beck: Yessir!
Call: Affirmative.
Sanda: You got it, Will.
Beck: (Don't worry, big brother...)
Beck: (I'm coming to save you...!)
__________________________________________________
"... Beck..."
"Yeah?"
"...Please...please be careful. Please."
"I know, Dad."
"We're all counting on you, Beck--promise me you'll come back in one piece for your uncle, eh?"
"I promise, Sanda."
"Good luck, No. 9. Now preparing Xel Transfer..."
"Dad?"
"Yes?"
"...I love you."
"...I love you too, Beck...pass that on to Pyrogen for me..!"
[XELS TRANSFERRING...]
[Once Beck had fully reconstituted, Xels clicking into place as his form settled, the first thing that he felt was the heat.]
[The second was the smoke filling the air, and the third was the distant sound of crazed, infected robots just up ahead--Pyrogen was not the only one given free range of the place. Many industrial, non-sentient CherryDyn and Sanda models were running rampant...]
[Beck's comm line crackled to life.]
Call: No. 9, do you read?
[Beck lifted a hand to the side of his helmet.]
Beck: This is Nine--I read you loud and clear! I've made it to the Oil Platform...
[He pauses.]
Beck: No sign of One yet...and the place is just...it's chaos...
[Soon enough, Sanda could be heard over the line as well, along with White.]
Sanda: A fire wielding robot running wild in an oil refinery...I don't like the looks of this at all.
White: Not exactly ideal conditions, I'll grant you that...
White: Quickly now, Beck--Locate Mighty No. 1!
Beck: On it!
[Beck sprints forward...]
[...And slips.]
Beck: Whoa-!
[CLANK.]
Beck: --Ow--
Call: It appears No. 9 has encountered an oil spill. From my scans, several major pipelines of the refinery have burst.
Beck: That...would have been helpful two seconds ago...
Sanda: Shake it off, Beck! And be careful if the other robots in the area set it on fire--!
Beck: -Slowly picks himself up- Got it....
[VERRRRRRRRR--]
Beck: --!!!
Call: Incoming hostile robots.
[It was a forklifting robot--carrying a crate full of explosives, no less! And once it saw the young Mighty Number, it wasted no time revving it's engine and charging at full speed--!]
Beck: aHHH--
[Beck didn't roll out of the way--he jumped, and let the robot pass under him.]
[MN.9 HAS GONE INTO COMBAT MODE.]
[He shoots, and once the robot's Xel Structure was disrupted, stunning it in place, he AcXelarates into it in a flash of white--absorbing its Xel and leaving behind only it's cores.]
[XEL ABSORBED. ABSORPTION BOOST: ONLINE.]
[A green sheen of Xel encircles Beck--the same feeling of power flows through him like before--but this time was...different...]
Beck: ....?
[LAST time, the color was RED, wasn't it...?]
Call: Warning, multiple incoming CherryDyn robots detected.
Beck: Uh oh—
[Yes, now there was more--in addition to several furnace type robots that shot fire balls out of their tops, and other flame based models.]
Sanda: There are so many fire based robots WHY ARE THEY ALL HERE?!
White: Good question...perhaps Pyrogen led them here...?
[...As Beck transverses forward, he seems much quicker in this powered up state...]
[...But soon enough, the green Xel fades, and he returns to his normal speed.]
Beck: ...?
[THIS happened last time too--whenever he got one of those...absorption boosts, he got a little stronger somehow...so green makes him a little faster...?]
Beck: (Huh...when I saved the Round Digger, he turned purple---these guys either turn red, blue, yellow, or green...)
Beck: (If green makes me faster, then what does the rest do?)
[He decided to take a moment to figure it out--there were plenty of enemies to absorb, and certain models turned into one of those colors.]
Beck: (OK...Green makes my reflexes faster...)
Beck: (Red boosts my shot output--I can even shoot through certain walls for a while...)
Beck: (Yellow makes me jump higher...)
Beck: (...And blue...)
[XEL ABSORBED. CONVERTING...]
Beck: Huh?
[XEL STOCK 1 FULL.]
Beck: (Xel Stock? I can STORE extra Xel?!)
Beck: (Oh man--I can use that to repair myself on the fly! At least minor injuries...)
[Then--Suddenly--!]
[A familiar figure stands out against the clouded night...]
Pyro: Rrrrr.....
Beck: PYRO!!
[The Mighty Leader was standing atop of a ruined oil truck, surprisingly unlit...]
[Green eyes flickered towards his brother--]
Pyro: ......
Pyro: ...You...
Beck: --! YES! It's me, big brother--It's Beck! You remember!
Pyro: ...BURN....
Beck: !!!
Pyro: THE WORLD MUST...
[In a sudden fierce motion, Pyrogen quite literally EXPLODED into flames, becoming twice his own size as he HOWLED into the flame lit horizon overhead!]
[...However...]
[...Instead of attacking Beck...]
[He...leaps away?]
Beck: PYRO, WAIT!
[Beck, after recovering from the sheer, uncontrolled rage his eldest brother had just unleashed, dashed forward to give chase--]
Call: Warning: Multiple incoming robots detected.
Beck: Wha--where?!
[SECONDS later, more furnace type robots materialized, as well as a whole SLEW of enemies--both that were from the city AND the fire based models! It was an ambush!]
White: Beck!
Beck: NGH--!!
[He was trapped on all sides, and with nowhere to hide, he was pelted with enemy fire-- both of energy shots and actual real fire. ]
Sanda: MOVE, BECK!
[He's faced Pyro in battle before--in spars. He can handle a little heat, but this--]
Beck: HothothotHOT--
[There was nowhere to go--nowhere but UP, that is...]
[In the midst of quite literally being roasted over an open flame, Beck had to JUMP to avoid the heat from damaging anything important.]
[...REALLY jump.]
Beck: aaaAAAAAAAH--
[Fortunately, gravity and trajectory was kind enough to drop him atop of one of the flying enemies--who was none too pleased to have an extra passenger onboard.]
Call: .........
Call: Inquiry: Why do these kinds of events seem to always happen to No. 9?
Sanda: I...don't know...
Beck: Nice CDN GOOD CDN PLEASE DON'T--
[Too late--Beck was now on a VERY wild rodeo ride with the cargo carrying robot, trying to shake him off by flying erratically--and into other robots.]
Beck: -SCREAMING-
White: Hold on, Beck!
Beck: WHAT DO YOU THINK I'M DOING--?!
Call: Beck, you have a acquired a higher vantage point. I suggest using this to your advantage.
Beck: I WOULD IF THIS GUY WOULD HOLD STILL FOR TWO--
[VERRRRRRR--]
Beck: --AwNO--
[The flying CDN had collided with another forklifting robot--which was carrying another crate filled with explosives. The resulting explosion lit up the evening, temporarily obscuring all with the smoke that rose from it.]
[......]
[MN.9 STATUS: ONLINE, COMBAT MODE ENGAGED, DAMAGE REPORT: GYRO BALANCERS CRITICAL, ARMOR PLATING HAS BEEN BREACHED.]
Beck: .....uuuuugh....
White: Beck! Do you read me?! SAY SOMETHING!
Beck: ....hurts...ow....can't....
Call: No. 9's Gryo systems have been damaged. His mobile systems are shot.
Sanda: --That's it--I'm pulling him out of there! This is way too-
White: Wait!
White: Beck--there is another ability that I designed you with! Can you access your Xel Stocks?
Beck: nnngh...
[USE XEL STOCK 1?]
[COMMAND//: YES.]
[ACCESSING INTERNAL XEL STORAGE...]
[A relieving burst of light blue light seemed to pour out of the ports on Beck's back, wrapping him up in a healing sheen. The cracks on his armor were being sealed, while most of the Xel was released internally...]
Beck: --!!!!
[SELF REPAIR COMPLETE. ALL SYSTEMS NORMAL.]
[Beck shot STRAIGHT up into a sitting position with a small gasp, feeling reinvigorated--renewed, even! He was thrown into alertness, looking around this way and that...]
[...It seemed the resulting explosion from the CDN crashing into the forklift robot had cleared away the rest of the ambush. Place was a MESS, however--some of the oil piping had burst as well, and it's flammable contents were now spilling forth EVERYWHERE.]
[...Beck was not spared from it--he was more or less splattered with oil now, tainting his pristine white armor.]
Beck: Ew...!
White: -SIGHS WITH RELIEF-
Sanda: No time for a bath now, Beck--you gotta keep moving!
Beck: ...Right... (Wouldn't mind one from Cryo right about now...)
Sanda: My...did you SEE all those bots? And such power...
Sanda: ...These designs of yours in our models are something ELSE, Will...
White: ....
White: Yes, well, under the circumstances--that hardly feels like a compliment. -_-;;
[Beck only had one way to go, and that was forward...]
[...Over a flaming floor of burning oil, that is--and above?]
Beck: .....
Beck: Are those electrified spikes.
Call: Warning: It is not just electricity, but energized signals on the ceiling. They have been modified to disrupt Xel Structures. Proceed with caution.
Beck: Wait wait wait--
Beck: Are you saying that if I touch it I'LL JUST EXPLODE.
Call: That is correct, No. 9. Your core, however, would be intact, although--
White: I--I think he understands the concept, Call.
Beck: Right--don't touch the purple things, don't touch the purple things--
[Dashing across the suspended platforms was the only way across--along with absorbing other robots along the way. Using the green Absorption Speed Boost he acquired from them, he was able to quickly get by the hair-raising corridor...]
[...And into the Oil Silo field.]
Beck: I still don't see Pyrogen yet...
Sanda: He must be somewhere up ahead, he couldn't have gone that far...
[No. 9 was really starting to get the hang of his AcXelarate Dash--it was almost becoming second nature, actually. He could use it as often as he wanted--there seemed to be no limit, and it didn't expend any of his energy at all.]
[Which was a very good thing for what came up next.]
Beck: --?!
[The lower half of the Silo in front of him was damaged--and began to topple over directly overhead.]
Beck: WHOA--
[Beck immediately started to floor it, becoming merely a white blur among the grey of smoke--the Silo crashed behind him with a loud rumble, missing him by only mere inches.]
Call: Heat has compromised the integrity of near by structures. Please proceed with caution.
Beck: NO OFFENSE, CALL, BUT I'VE BEEN CAUTIOUS THIS WHOLE TIME--
White: BECK--IN FRONT!
[...It was sort of like watching some supped up version of dominoes.
The silos were perfectly aligned in such a way that they toppled over in Beck's path, forcing him to sprint and dash for his life. The malfunctioning robots around him didn't seem to care--they were only concerned on destroying the Mighty Number--so they retaliated by shooting up fireballs into the air to rain down from above.]
[And if that wasn't enough, the floor beneath began to give away under his feet--no, the PLATFORMS were.]
White: DON'T STOP!
Beck: AAAAAAAAAAAAA--
[It seemed like an eternity. It was, in fact, about 20 seconds, but those nail biting seconds seemed to stretch into forever as Beck barreled forth without pause, destruction and fire raging around him, smoke stinging his eyes and throat.--]
Beck: WHAT THE--
[The path suddenly ended.]
White: NO--!
[It just--ended. There was only a sudden drop into a pit of fire, an inferno flaring so high, it was impossible to tell if there was anything on the other side.]
[But he had no choice.]
[He had to jump.]
Beck: HUP--!
[Out of the frying pan...]
[ACXELARATE DASH: MAX OUTPUT REACHED]
[And into the fire.]
[DATA LOSS.]
White: Call--!!!
Call: Searching...
Call: ..........
[.........]
[..........….............]
[.......................................]
[SIGNAL FOUND. MN.9 STATUS: ONLINE.]
White: YES...!
Call: Re-syncing feeds...
"--can't get a good grip on--!!"
[--Beck had made it!]
[...But only barely. He was grabbing onto the ledge with everything he had, trying to hoist himself up--but the oil wasn't making things any easier.]
Beck: Arrgh--
[FINALLY, his feet find some perchance, and he pushed off of the wall--and front flipped over, landing firmly and safely on the other side of the pit.]
Beck: (--! Hey--I did it! I DID IT BRAND--)
[It looks as if some of that acrobatics training paid off--]
[....Too bad said brother in question wasn't here to see it.]
Beck: (--.....Oh....right....)
White: --......!
Sanda: ? Will?
White: I have an idea--Can we send one of the Patch bots to his location?
Sanda: --But--whatever for?
White: I want him to be in the BEST condition possible before he faces No. 1...
[Will's green hues stare intensely at the screen, at his son.]
White: Pyrogen, while not being made with the latest Xel technology, has the most experience out of them all. If they ARE to battle...
White: He's going to need all the help we can offer.
White: We can send a Patch Bot with some Xel Storage Cubes for him to either store into his Xel Stocks or use right then and there for self repair.
Sunny: -BEEP BEEP- (-_-)7
Call: Commencing Xel Transfer....
[XEL TRANSFER COMPLETE.]
[Beck almost very nearly shot Sunny in her display--but lucky her unique coloring was enough for him to recognize the Patch Bot.]
Beck: Sunny?!
Sunny: -BEEP BEEP-
[Sunny's stomach compartment opens, and out tumbles several Xel Storage Cubes ready to be absorbed.]
Beck: !
White: Beck, these should give you enough to normalize your Xel Count. Call has confirmed that No. 1 is in that destroyed building wreckage ahead...
Beck: .......
[No. 9 takes a deep breath...]
Beck: (OK, Pyro...here I come...)
[After dropping down to a partially collapsed room...]
[Once again standing atop of a pile of debris was the fire-powered leader himself.]
Beck: Pyro--! Finally...
Pyro: Hnrrrrrr...
Beck: Pyro--come on, big brother-- I KNOW you're in there SOMEWHERE! We don't have to--
Pyro: You....
Pyro: ...Why...?
Beck: ...!!
Beck: Because you're my BROTHER! I DON'T WANT TO FIGHT YOU, NO. 1!
Pyro: ......
Beck: Just--PLEASE hold still for just a few minutes and I SWEAR I can fix this--I can SAVE you!
[With dark, glowing emerald eyes, the leader stood. Unflinching.]
Pyro: ......
Pyro: No....
Beck: Pyro--!
Pyro: Why...
Pyro: Why you not burn...?
Beck: Wha--?
Pyro: WHY YOU NOT BURN?!
Beck: PYRO--
Pyro: WHY...YOU...NOT--
[As Pyrogen fully ignites his body in flames, HUGE pillars of fire explode on either side of the room--effectively trapping both Mighty Numbers within.]
[Almost as if this was to be a cage match...]
Beck: Uh-oh...
Pyro: Burn...
Pyro: The world must BURN...! ALL MUST BUUUURN!!!
[MN.1 HAS ENTERED FULL COMBAT MODE. RESTRICTIONS: NONE. ]
Beck: NO--!
[SCANNING...]
[SCAN COMPLETE.]
Pyro: PYRO CRASH, AND YOU...BUUUUUUUUURRRN!
[Pyrogen was a close range combat model, excelling in melee-style combat.]
[He wasted no more time with any more words. A distorted yell of RAGE accompanied his first attack--a headlong, full bodied tackle!]
Beck: Gh--!
[Jumping over was the logical choice--]
Beck: AAAH--!
[...But not the best one, as Pyrogen ALSO left a trail of arching fire in his wake. Beck had jumped RIGHT into them, sustaining burns across his armor plating.]
Pyro: Yes--BURN! BURN LIKE THE REST! B U R N!!
[Flaring, No. 1 changed direction--his arms ignited to TWICE their original output, allowing him to gather his flames up for another attack.]
Pyro: BURN M O R E!
[He thrusted his arms forward--and a burst of fire shot out, threatening to engulf Beck in it's hellish range!]
Beck: PYRO--STOP IT!
[The youngest Mighty had no time wince at pain--he forced himself to roll away, the blaring heat reminding him to be weary of the fire walls that soared to the sky.]
[His default weapon was drawn--but he had not fired yet.]
White: It's no USE, Beck!
Beck: --!? Dad?!
White: HE IS TOO FAR GONE!
White: You have to stop him by FORCE--!
White: ONLY THEN CAN HE BE SAVED!
Beck: .....
Pyro: B U R N, MOTH! B U R N!!
Beck: . . .
[MN.9 HAS ENTERED FULL COMBAT MODE. RESTRICTION: PRESERVE MN.1]
Beck: I'm sorry, Pyro...
Beck: But if I have to do this to get you back...!
Pyro: --?!?
[Bright orange dematerializing shots pierce through the flames--nailing Pyro right in the chest, who seems VERY confused as to what just happened--]
[--...But the confusion didn't last. It quickly bled away to anger. ]
Pyro: RAAAAAAAAAAAGH--!
Call: Warning: I detect a buildup of energy from Mighty No. 1.
Beck: Energy--?
[Pyrogen's flames...changed color. They were no longer just a bright yellow and orange.]
[They were purple. A sick, sick shade of purple and blue.]
Beck: ---????!?
[And that's when it hit him.]
[He's SEEN this before.]
[The Greater Dusk team--at the Queen's Tournament--Bladeblaster--!! ]
Pyro: BURNING...BURNIIIING...
Sanda: -ACTUALLY SCREAMS-
Beck: --!!!!! (Nowhere to HIDE--!!! GOTTA THINK FAST--)
Beck: Ah--!
[ACCESSING XEL STOCK 2...]
[DATA LOSS]
Sanda: oh GOD WHAT HAPPENED WHAT HAPPENED--?!?!
Call: .....Mighty No. 9's signal has vanished--as has Mighty No. 1's. The likelihood of their transponders ceasing to transmit due to excessive heat damage is--
White: PLEASE, Call--! No more of that--ARE THEY ALIVE?!
------------------------------------------------------------------
Pyro: Hah...hah....
Pyro: ........
[There was no sign of Beck at all...]
Pyro: ...........
Pyro: Yes.....YES! LIKE A MOTH TO THE FLAME--!!
[Victory was his. A familiar feeling--he couldn't place why, but it FELT good--]
[So good that he started to laugh, distorted chortles reverbing around the Oil Platform...]
[There was nothing but the crackle of fire...and screams...]
[.....]
[… … …]
[Wait.]
[All the humans had fled.]
[So WHY--]
Pyro: WHAT--?!
Beck: NOT DONE YET--!
[Seemingly dropping down from NOWHERE, Beck landed on his elder's back--forcing him to buckle from the force of the fall and the added weight--]
[BLAM!]
[XEL ABSORBED.]
Pyro: RRAA--ACK--!!
[Flames attempted to flare on his back--they licked at Beck's form, scorching his armor black.]
[The pain--it was almost unlike anything he's ever felt before.]
[The only thing that came close...was...]
----------------------------------------------------
"Yes...! That's it, my better incarnation--FIGHT LIKE YOU ARE ABOUT TO DIE!~"
----------------------------------------------------
[Beck gritted his teeth.]
[He couldn't let go--can't, not for anything, ANYTHING!]
"Remember. Beck--Physical pain....is MENTAL. In the arena, you will learn how to push PAST it."
[BLAM.]
[XEL ABSORBED.]
"But--Big Brother--"
[BLAM.]
[XEL ABSORBED.]
"What if it hurts too much...?"
"One of these days, Beck--how much physical pain you feel won't matter in dire situations."
"Are you going to let a few deep scratches come between you and what you care about the most?"
[BLAM.]
[XEL ABSORBED.]
"N-No, sir, No. 1!"
"Good!"
"Now--Show your big brother what you can DO!"
Beck: COME ON, PYRO--!
[FILTERING.....]
[A blinding flash of green surrounds the two, expelling all of the infected purple Xel in Pyro's frame, running it THROUGH Beck himself, who expelled it right back at One, returning the Xel back to it's rightful owner.]
Pyro: --!!!!
[The Mighty Leader stood rigid, frozen in place as the Xel was simultaneously pulled and put back into him--with little to no pain whatsoever. ]
[In fact...]
[It felt...warm...]
"..........I can see you, you know."
"Eep--!!"
"Now, now, don't be frightened--you have nothing to fear, Beck. Not in this place."
"But...you...and everything else...is so...so much bigger than me..."
"Heh..."
"Good things come in small packages."
[......Small....]
"TRY AND CATCH ME, NO. 1!"
Pyro: ........
Pyro: B...Beck...
[THUNK.]
[His knees give away.]
Pyro: Is that....you...?
[There is only harsh breathing in his ear--but...]
Beck: ....
Beck: B...Big...Brother...
Beck: Pyro...I...you're OK...
Pyro: I...what...where...?
[-PING!-]
Call: Connection reestablished. Mighty Numbers 1 and 9 are online.
White: Beck--! Beck--are you--
Pyro: ....F...Father...?
[.....]
White: S...Son...?
Pyro: Father--...what...what happened? I...don't....remember...
Sanda: He...WILL-- WILL HE DID IT HE DID IT--!!
White: Pyrogen...! You're...alright...!
Pyro: Not--...not exactly...Ngh...
Pyro: I....
[SCANNING...]
Pyro: ......????
Pyro: Beck--What...why do I smell...oil?
Beck: Long... long story, bro...ohmanI'msotired...
Pyro: You're...? I...I don't understand--
White: ......
White: Call...prepare for Xel Transfer. Pyro...
White: Everything will be fine, son...I promise. I'll explain it when you're well rested enough.
Pyro: ........
Call: Xel Transfer in progress...
[Will never thought he would be so close to having a heart attack at the age of 25, and today had been eventful enough to garner that reaction on more than one occasion.]
[But the feeling of relief he felt when he saw his eldest carrying his youngest on his back...]
Call: Xel Transfer complete. I suggest not drawing too close to No. 1--he is still radiating fairly high temperatures.

“The United States has issued a state of national emergency issued by the President—sources tell us that it is yet another cyber terrorist attack in the form of a volatile virus affecting many Xelbots…”
Jack: Oh my God…
[Jack sits in his flat a shaking mess—it only gets worse as he continues to listen to the British news report, every word and syllable only serving to instill a greater feeling of fear and dread with every passing second…]
“Virus symptoms include: loss of reason, hyper aggressiveness and violence, the infected surrounded in violet and red flames—”
Jack: —!!!
Jack: (Oh God—this—this is—)
Jack: (This is exactly what I felt back in the Queen’s Finals—! God, I KNEW those crosses were bad news, I knew it—)
Jack: —! Oh frag—! Miss Eight—!
[She was—she was GOING back to the US to follow a certain trail, but—oh God oh God—]
[Jack springs up from his seat to grab the backpack Kate left for him. He digs into the contents until he finds the phone also included, and starts flipping through the contacts list.]
Jack: Come on, pick up, pick up, please, please—
[KSSSSST….]
[...Nothing. Not even a busy signal, or any kind of voicemail—just unsettling, glitchy static. Jack curses loudly, and almost throws the phone on the ground—until he remembers that he had more than just one phone number to dial. He punches in the next one on the list: her brother, Goose.]
[Beep, beep, beep…]
Jack: Glitchfrag it, Goose, not you too—!
[But even a busy signal was better than the garbled mess he heard with Kate’s—although that only spelled worse for the siren sniper.]
Jack: Come on, Doc…
[Click.]
Jack: DOC—
“Hello, this is Dr. William Apollo White of Sanda Technologies. I’m currently unavailable right now—”
[Voicemail.]
Jack: No—!
[He was starting to lose hope—there weren’t many numbers left…]
Jack: -Clicks on Cardinal’s number- Please—
[He DOES get through, for a short moment, but before he can even say anything—]
[Click. Beeeeeeep.]
Jack: DAMN IT—
[The call was dropped. Wherever Cardinal is, he has terrible phone reception.]
Jack: (Only Doc Mikhail is left; God, I hope he’s alright, please don’t go to voicemail, please—)
[Click.]
Jack: Doc, Oh thank God—
“Mister Jack? That is you?”
Jack: (Oh, uh… okay. This must be his kid. Um…) Y-yeah, it’s me…. Is… is your Dad there?
[He felt bad as he heard the kid cut a sob short, answering with a wavering voice.]
“Father is… Father is alright, да, but…! All the alarms went off, and everyone was so hot, like a fever!”
[She seemed to be trying not to cry.]
“Papa made everything safe again, but he said that it came from Uncle Sanda’s house! They won’t answer the phone!”
Jack: (...So they got hit with the virus too—ugh, it must have jumped over to their server—!)
“Beck won’t answer my pings…! Papa left so many messages on Doctor William’s phone, he… he was getting angry…”
Jack: (Oh, God, I’ve heard STORIES about the Doc getting ticked...or he could just be stressed, either way—)
“Please come over, Mister Jack! It’s safe over here, and we don’t know if they are okay! Cardinal’s gone and I… I’m scared…!”
Jack: Hey, hey, shhh…
Jack: It’s gonna be okay, alright? Listen—I...I’m still stuck over here in England but—
Jack: —?
“...M-Mister Jack? Wh-What’s wrong?”
[Something was slithering behind his couch—something he caught moving out of the corner of his eye, had he not been facing the other wall. Fear seized up his entire frame as he realized the thing that had just taken refuge behind the furniture was ENTIRELY green in color, and as he turned to look—]
[Red, beady eyes glowed back at him.]
Jack: A-Aaaugh—!
“Mister Jack—??”
Jack: I—I, um, I’m going, j-just—just hang tight, okay—bye—!
[After scrambling out of the living room, backpack in hand—who knows HOW many Search Snakes were in his flat now, how many EYES that Viper had in his place—quickly packing out a suitable change in clothes, he was out the door in less than half an hour, heading for a place he knows is safe haven...mostly.]
[When Jack arrived in the Meadow, he could see a crowd outside one of the buildings.
It was a rather sizable group of Robot Masters, all in their full armor. The data in the area was thick with battle-ready tension: a few of them even held weapons in their hands, ready to lash out and strike.]
Jack: -Abruptly halts- ._.;; Uhhh…
Jack: (This doesn’t look very good…)
[He knew all too well how a group of Combat ‘bots in a bad mood could be unforgiving at unwanted interruptions. With Kalinka nowhere in sight, he was beginning to wonder if he should have taken his chances with the Search Snake, rather than butt in during this time of crisis.
Luckily for him, the matter was soon taken out of his hands as his signal registered to someone who recognized him.]
Snow: !!! Mister Jack!
[He runs over to grab Jack by the wrist, causing a few of the others to look up. His presence seemed to calm them a little, by providing a welcome distraction.]
Snow: I’m really glad you’re okay!
Jack: Y-Yeah, me too...where’s Kalinka—?
Snow: Kalinka went with my baby brother! He’s really quiet an’ is a Time Lord an’ such. She’ll be super safe with him!
Jack: (…If he’s a Time Lord, why didn’t they just ask him about what’s going on?)
[He allowed himself to be led over near the mainframe. Although the lab had been constructed, the original mainframe that had been there from the beginning was still outside. Currently, there were two people working at the controls: Dr. Mikhail Cossack, and… Tobias.]
Jack: —!!
Jack: (Th...That bot with the mask—!)
Digger: Hello, Mister Jack! You are well that is yes good! Much worried for everybody now, да.
Keltso: -Scowls, tapping one of his fingers against the Ring Boomerang he is holding- At least you appear to be in one piece. I don’t suppose YOU know what’s going on?
Jack: I—I...Uh...
Skull: -Flatly- Ignore him. He’s just built to be Rage, that’s all.
Jack: (That’s… not exactly reassuring, but okay then…)
Jack: I...there...God, I tried calling everyone—
Jack: I-It’s some kinda cyberattack, some kinda virus—it’s spreading across the whole damn country—!
Mikhail: -Turns around sharply- What?
Speedy: The entire country?
Shadow: Saints preserve us…
Snow: -Really concerned expression- But…! The virus made us really angry and sad!
Jack: (Just like with those stupid crosses…) Nnng… (Kate was right, this isn’t OVER…!)
Jack: Wait— even… even you guys? But… you aren’t Xelbots… and you LOOK fine…
Tobias: -Grits his teeth and sparks up in frustration- It was trying to activate the same thing in our coding! When that didn’t work, it messed with our Combat initiatives and cross-references…
Mikhail: -Turned back to the work station already- I purged it from the system, though I had to take rather extensive steps to do so. I’ll spare you the technical details for now: I’m still trying to get through to them. -Grumbles- For the love of Mary, Will—why won’t you answer your PHONE?
Jack: ? I tried calling Doctor White too, but I just got his voicemail…
Pisces: ? Why?
Jack: … “Why” what?
Pisces: Why did you call. Didn’t know you had his number.
[Now the eyes of several Robot Masters were trained on him, curious.]
Jack: -Awkwardly shifts his weight- Uh… Miss Eight gave it to me…
Jaden: …
Jaden: -Looks around- Why didn’t she come with you?
Jack: She wasn’t with me, she went—
Snow: -Interrupts- Maybe she’s here an’ invisible! :D
Jack: …
Jack: (...Honestly, I didn’t think of that, and I’d really hope she is...but she would have made her presence known SOMEHOW, in a time like this—that, and...that static I heard…)
Jack: … (Maybe I should try again—)
Tobias: -PING!-
[Everything abruptly came to a halt as the monitor became alive with video feed. The scene it displayed was one in chaos: damaged equipment, overturned furnishings, broken containers…
And a couple of very surprised Doctors and their youngest children.]
[CALL] //: Link established. We now have a stable connection with the Meadow Lab.
Will: Mikhail!
Mikhail: WILL!
Beck: GUYS—
Soi: Y-You’re OK—!
[Mikhail heaved a sigh of relief. His friend was alive!]
Mikhail: Thank God you’re alright! When I saw the attack came from your servers and you didn’t answer your phone, I thought the worst had happened…!
[Will stammered as he tried to explain.]
Will: I-I-I-I… I’m sorry, Mikhail, I didn’t—
Soi: Attack? What attack? Don’t tell me—!
Mikhail: -Balls up a fist in frustration, lowering his head and gritting his teeth- I have been spending the last few HOURS piecing things back together after a virus infected the Cossack server of the RobotMaster® Database! I had to completely erase everything on the server and use the external backup to put it back online!
Will: B-but! If you got infected, then—!
Siam: -Interrupts- We’re FINE, the Gemini: White Cell programs we have were sufficient Siam: with help Gemini: in Siamini: staving it off.
Keltso: -Angrily shoves Siam out of the way, speaking in Russian- {Get to the point, cousin! Jack said the virus made international news! What is going on over there?!}
[Beck started shouting in a panic.]
Beck: EVERY ROBOT IN THE CITY AND THE COUNTRY IS GOING BANANAS AND I CAN’T CONTACT THE OTHERS AND I FOUGHT A GIANT ROUND DIGGER AND EVERYONE IS GONE–
Soi: Beck—BECK, CALM DOWN—
[Too late.
The news and Beck’s panic over it was like a spark on bone-dry tinder, setting aflame an inferno of panic. Distressed data began building up and blaring as this panic cascaded and amplified between the Robot Masters, and the air became filled with the chaotic garble of a smattering of languages.]
Keltso: {WHAT?!}
Shadow: -Japanese- {You cannot contact your brothers?! Where ARE they!?}
[CALL] //: The locations of Mighty Numbers 1-8 have yet to be identified. We have just restored the laboratory to normal function.
Beck: -Trying to be calmer like Sanda asked- W-we’re going to search for them right away—!
[This did not have the desired effect. Not at ALL. The Robot Masters flinched at this as if burned, backing off and eyes flickering bright green or red in fear. Nico was silently screaming in alarm and panic over the channel. Even Digger—who rarely let his smile leave his face when he was in public—looked terrified.]
Nico: -You’re— you’re HUNTING them— -
Beck: —?!
Speedy: -Staggers back, raising his voice as he speaks rapidly in Spanish- Dios mío, todos van a morir—
Beck: W-what?!
Pisces: Brother—
[Pisces was trying to comfort him, but it was in vain.]
Speedy: ¡¿Quién más queda para parar esto, si la esperanza se ha ido?! Están siendo CAZADOS ahora, van a ¡MORIR—!
Beck: N-NO, THAT’S! THAT’S NOT—!
[Beck’s protests fell on deaf earcaps.
Everyone’s minds were drawn deep into the fall of Monstropolis—fire and smoke everywhere—and for good reason. Within their own world, the mention of Monstropolis was synonymous with the anti-AI&A dystopian culture—linked without forgiveness to the transgressions of the Robot Masters, which had incited terror and later decimated the city. Because of such actions, an unforgiving hate had become deeply rooted in the culture, and any AI&A (authorized or not) was subject to death by mobs if ever discovered… and a fate worse than death, if they were captured.
Speedy had actually been witness to the immediate aftermath of the fall of Monstropolis first-hand—and he would never forget such days, nor the utter hatred that followed.]
Speedy: La gente se va a matar a todos ellos van a mORIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIR—
[And he was screaming, screaming in agonizing despair. He couldn’t stand the thought of the one thing that he and his family had gone out of their way to help prevent… truly coming to pass.
The likes of which, of course…]
[…held very, VERY sinister parallels, should Beck be called to play such a role.]
Speedy: POR FAVOR—TEN PIEDAD—POR FAVOR, USTED TIENE QUE GUARDAR—
[This sudden comparison didn’t do them any favors, and was CLEARLY stressing Beck out!]
Beck: -Breathing HARD, the XEL around him reacting erratically-
Will: Beck—BREATHE, just…!
Soi: -TIIIIME TO LOCK ALL THE NON-INFECTED XEL IN THE GIANT CANISTERS IN CASE BECK BREAKS DOWN-
[The others were really starting to break down as well.]
Jaden: -VERY upset- I’m begging you not to kill them like that, please have mercy—
Nico: Oh God help us— Beck, pLEASE, PLEASE DON’T KILL THEM—
[C R A C K]
[There was an audible crackling noise as Beck visibly began to panic. Both Will and Sanda were clearly alarmed by this. Mikhail, for his part, barely seemed to notice—he was busy trying to prevent the RMDC server from crashing.
Despite his efforts, however… he could not block out the pain in their voices. He could not mute the despair in their screams. He could not stop Beck from recalling stories he had never been meant to hear.
…Their voices rose and seemed to entrap him, PLEADS of mercy and terror, growing louder, louder, LOUDER–!]
[The Xel within the large storage canisters in the lab BURST open, quickly inciting a wave of alarm!
Skull created a barrier around himself and his family, while some of the others instinctively took on a fighting stance. The look in their eyes was wild—that of cornered, panicked prey. Both Will and Sanda threw up their arms on instinct, as if expecting a repeat of the LAST time Beck had lost his composure…
…But the wave of Xel never came.]
Mikhail: …?
[Instead…the Xel paused. Drew TOWARDS the Mighty Number, the same soft, green glow enveloping him…]
Beck: All of you be QUIET!
[Mikhail stood, placing a hand on Keltso’s shoulder as a signal to stand down. He was somewhat mesmerized by the display—]
[XEL ABSORBED.]
[—a show of power the likes of which he had never seen from Beck before, but not one which was entirely foreign to him.]
Mikhail: … Incredible… (Why, it’s like watching Felix…!)
[XEL QUOTA REACHED. XEL PURGE: ONLINE. XELFILTER.EXE HAS BEEN PREPARED FOR OVERDRIVE.]
Beck: …….
[And as Beck stood there, eyes glowing a willful emerald green, coming to terms with what he just did and what was transpiring around him… the green glow seemed to calm the others.
Their own eyes stopped glowing the panicked solid green they had been moments before, and the Robot Masters stood down. They were watching silently, anxiously—waiting to hear what fateful words Beck had to say.]
Beck: …
[The Xelbot closed his eyes tightly, thinking back on all that had been said—all the things that fed into that moment—]
- — - — -
“I’m not leaving without you! I WON'T LEAVE YOU IN THE MIDDLE OF MONSTROPOLIS! The feds would—”
“…Haywire robots…in all 52 states…”
“IT’S BLACKWELL’S FAULT—”
“Hellllooo! Is this thing on?”
[…Screaming. A brokenhearted, familiar woman’s cry, screaming in agony—]
“POR FAVOR—TEN PIEDAD—POR FAVOR, USTED TIENE QUE GUARDAR—”
“You have tools of which this world–or ANY world–have only just begun to see! USE THEM!”
“Come on—SNAP OUT OF IT—NOW!”
- — - — -
[He wouldn’t let it end this way. He just wouldn’t…!]
- — - — -
“Let me tell you something, Master Beck.”
- — - — -
[His memories took him back to a day that seemed years ago—a peaceful day, shortly after he had made a promise.
Then, just as now, he had been called upon for what seemed like an impossible task. Called to use his Xel powers to save others. Back then, it had been via the construction of impression molds, which one of their friends would use as casts to make replacement parts for the Rebel Angels. Parts that would save their lives, and free them from living as scavengers.
He had been scared and uncertain, then—afraid, and worried that he would fail the others. But Felix (who was to be making the parts themselves) had much greater confidence in him. For he had seen a power in Beck much like his own.
And the words he had said were coming back to him now, in this dark hour of such desperate need…]
- — - — -
“It is your heart and your build, your purpose, to help others. That is where your greatest power, I think, will always lie.
When you truly believe in your cause, the strength comes to you.
And after all.
You are Mighty.”
- — - — -
[He took in a deep breath.]
Beck: …
Beck: I’m… not going to destroy my own family.
[The Rebel Angels did a double take in alert surprise.]
Beck: No…
[When he opened his eyes again—
They were a FIERCE bright green, shining with a will and determination that could only be defined as Mighty.]
Mikhail: … (I feel like I’ve seen that look before somewhere…)
Beck: I’m going to SAVE them!
Will: … …
Soi: … …
[There was a stunned silence from the others. Their eyes seemed glazed over.
…Clearly, this was going to take a moment to process.]
Mikhail: -Sighs in relief and puts a hand to his face, finally coming out of an adrenaline rush into a hard crash-
Mikhail: …It may take them a few minutes to finish processing that data.
Mikhail: It’s just.
Mikhail: Barely within their comprehension….
Mikhail: {great heavens I am so tired}
[He sat down heavily on the ground, just listening for the time being as he gathered his thoughts.]
Beck: … …
Will: … … …
Soi: … …
[A brief pause.]
Will: Beck…
Will: I…I can’t let you go OUT there—
Skull: Нет.
[They had finished processing, and were MUCH calmer now, if… weary and haunted.]
Skull: -Quietly- {Doctor, you must.}
Skull: {Unless you wish the likes of my cousin to be created to go in his place.}
Will: —… …
Soi: … … …
Keltso: {It’s true, Doctor. Your family, they are the strongest. Who can stand against them if they wish to fight, unless they themselves also use incredible force?}
Keltso: {Without you all to help keep order, it will fall to others who are…}
Keltso: {LESS compassionate.}
Soi: … …
Soi: Will…Will, they’re right.
[Sanda turned towards his best friend, who had placed a hand on his son’s shoulder…]
Soi: There’s…no other way….
[Jaden spoke up meekly. Despite being one of the most intimidating Robot Masters, he held a submissive attitude and outwardly meek disposition. He was still looking at the ground as he raised his voice.]
Jaden: …Please…
Jaden: …Doctor, people are already panicked. Beck may be the only way to stop this from becoming a second Monstropolis.
Jaden: And… a-and it’s not unheard of for one boy to take on the world. And win.
Jaden: …And since he stays in his right mind, Beck’s far better than he could ever hope to be…
Will: … … …
[He seemed—conflicted. On one hand—he SO DESPERATELY wanted to save his sons and daughters as well—
…But Beck was ALSO his son.
What if…?]
Beck: Dad…
Will: ….
[Will kneels, looking at his son in the eye while placing his hands on both of his shoulders, now, almost identical green hues staring into each other.]
Beck: Dad…I…I’m not gonna lie. I’m scared.
[The Robot Master built for fear shifted his weight uneasily and looked at the ground as Beck continued.]
Beck: And—to be honest—I…I don’t even know if I can DO this…
Beck: …But…
Beck: I gotta try.
Beck: Because—….losing…
Beck: …everyone…
Beck: …scares me WORSE.
[The others look… heartbroken, at this. There is a painful silence as their friend kept talking—especially given is struggling with his words.]
Beck: Dad, I…I don’t…I have to…I LOVE them, Dad, I have to TRY. I HAVE to.
Beck: They aren’t—themselves, this isn’t their fault—!
Beck: I have to TRY and SAVE them, Dad! WHO ELSE WILL?!
Will: … .
[Tears…]
Beck: Please…!
[There was a tense silence as Will bowed his head.]
Will: ….
Will: Soi?
Soi: …Yes?
[…]
Will: Please tell me the teleporters are still working.
Beck: —!
[…!!!]
Will: We’re going to need them.
[Mikhail came to his feet, looking very tired.]
Mikhail: …I’m truly sorry, Will. I know what this is like…. I wouldn’t wish it on any man.
Will: …
[His children….
As much as he put on a brave face, he really was in deep pain. Why did this have to happen?]
Will: I… I know…
Soi: -Places a hand on his shoulders-
Will: … ….
Beck: …Dad…
Will: ….-loooong sigh-
[Will shakes his head and slumps down to sit on several boxes labeled with the Sanda logo, his hands on his face…]
Will: My family…
[….It…
It was…almost like LAST time…
His family was….!]
Soi: Will…
[Sanda walks over and sits beside him, an arm around his shoulders.]
Soi: Will…it’s going to be alright.
Will: ……
Soi: You’ve got me in your corner, remember? ^^
[Ah, there it is. That old Sanda positive optimism and charm.]
Soi: I’m ALWAYS here for you, you know that!
Soi: So of COURSE I’m going to help you!
Will: ……
Soi: What are best friends FOR after all. We’re in this mess together… So we might as well stick together too, right?
Will: ….
Will: Heh…
Will: What would I do without you, Soi…?
Soi: Ooooh, I don’t know–probably working yourself ragged, that’s what.
Will: -chuckles softly-
Will: …..
Will: …Thank you, Soi.
Soi: Anytime, Will. Anytime.
Beck: -Smiles-
Mikhail: …Will?
Mikhail: Remember what I told you?
- — - — -
“Listen….
If anything ever goes that wrong for you,
I promise you I will help you find a way to fix it.”
- — - — -
Will: …Heh…right… I remember…
Soi: Ya see, Will?!
Tobias: Just tell us what you need!
Tobias: We’ll do whatever it takes to—
Mikhail: -Suddenly and forcefully- No, you will do no such thing, Tobias Wily.
[The emphasis in his voice was not lost on the wide-eyed idealist, and he flinched heavily at this.]
Keltso: … What? But Father—! Why not?!
Mikhail: …Because, my son—he is his father’s son.
Mikhail: He is impulsive, impatient, and passionate.
Tobias: -Desperate- But—! But they NEED our help! It’s absolute MADNESS out there!
Shadow: Surely you cannot expect us to abandon our friends in their time of greatest need!
Mikhail: -Turns and points to Shadow- That goes for you as well, Shadowman! We cannot interfere with this!
Tobias: -Shouting- BUT THEY NEED US!
Jack: HEY!
[Everyone stopped and turned in surprise. They’d all rather forgotten that the Xelbot was there.
Jack grimaced at the sudden attention, but forced himself to go on. He’d been numb with shock for most of the exchange, and trying to contact Kate—but it had all been in vain. But this was something he really couldn’t stand by and watch from the sidelines.
Not when he had seen what could happen.]
Jack: I… look, I really appreciate your help from back there, but…
Jack: Kid, the last time you helped, you… kinda got gutted in the sands, remember?
Will: …Quite so…
Tobias: I…
Shadow: And you would place me in such restraints as well? -Seems identifiably angry, which is a LOT more emotion than he usually gives off-
Shadow: Why should we not do everything we can to aid Beck in his fight? He bears a greater chance of swift success if he does not fight alone!
Mikhail: Try to think for a moment, and not let your heart overrule your mind, DWN-024!
Mikhail: It is utter arrogance to think that any of you could go into battle and not sustain a single injury! Do you think you can go on and bleed oil and coolant—and then regenerate—in the public eye, and people will not eventually catch on? What would happen to you then, Shadow?!
Shadow: —…
Mikhail: I know that each of you desire to try and stop those closest to you, but consider the consequences to them!
Mikhail: It would be dangerous for both of you and likely severely emotionally damaging to the Mighty Numbers in the long term…
Mikhail: You do not have the years of Combat experience they do! You are strong, but undisciplined! And unlike Beck, you have no idea how they fight! Think! What would they feel to be cured, only to find they had indisposed you while they were out of control?!
Soi: -pALES at the thought-
[Mikhail’s oldest son—at least, the oldest currently Online, David notwithstanding—twirled his drills in a way that sounded like a sad buzzing noise. He spoke with deep regret.]
Digger: Doctors American…
Digger: …To lose control, from outside force.
Digger: Very hurt much, yes bad.
Digger: … -Can’t. Just can’t. It’s hitting too close to home, here-
[aaAAAAND HE SUDDENLY STARTS TALKING VERY INTENSELY.]
Digger: It is frightening, and horrid!
Will: —!!
[He spoke fervently, any pretense of broken English dropped entirely in light of the situation.]
Digger: I only survived because Cardinal spared my life, faked my death for me—
Mikhail: {Digger, please—}
Digger: All the others, the ones he didn’t reach—they were all dead, but we all have to carry—
Mikhail: -Clearly distressed as well- {Easy—!}
Digger: It will be no easy thing, once they recover, for to be returned to right mind does not take away the sins. It will hurt them, badly.
Digger: …
Digger: -Sadly- You must… be ready for that….
Will: … … ..
Soi: … …
Beck: … … … (Guys…it’s… I swear…it’s not your fault…)
Will: … … ..
[Will felt tired. This nightmare had only just started, and he was already tired.]
Will: … (At least….) … (…At least… there's still a chance…) …
[He had friends with him, this time. Or, well… Sanda was with him. Mikhail, thankfully, was safe—at least… NOW he was safe. He felt a bit guilty that the RMDC had been infected by being connected with their server, but…]
Will: … (At least Mikhail has things under control over there.) -Small sigh- … (This really is such a nightmare…. Oh, mercy…! At least the others will stay out of it….)
[Stay… out of this…]
Mikhail: …This is why you must not interfere, nephews. We don’t want such an incident plaguing their hearts for the rest of their lives. It will be hard enough to carry without hurting close friends in the process…
Nico: …Good luck getting Shadow to agree. -Looks over at said brother- Maybe we should keep him Offline?
[Shadow gave a ping of data, clearly deeply insulted, but he did not offer a verbal retort.]
Skull: …At least, until Brandish is better…
Will: -Distantly- Yes…
[…]
Will: (This must be so hard on them, if they think the only way to deal with it is to go Offline. But I suppose it's for the best, in the end. I just…)
Will: (I just wish I could wake up from this NIGHTMARE, that it would be back to this morning…! Back when we were all seemingly free of this mess, and looking forward to the next match…!)
[…There seemed to be.
Something missing…
Will couldn't shake the nagging feeling that something was missing from this picture—something beyond the obvious.]
Beck: Don't worry—! I promise I'll save them!
Will: …?
[There it was again—that feeling—]
Will: (Shouldn't…?)
[Silence, with everyone lost in their thoughts. But that—that wasn't right, it—]
Will: —!
Mikhail: …? Will?
[That—that was it, the silence—]
Mikhail: Will— -Sounds concerned- Do you need to take a moment? I know this must be very difficult—
Will: N-no, I—
Will: Just… thinking on how quiet it is, usually… -Trails off-
Soi: Aw, we'll have them back together soon, and it'll be just as noisy as you remember!
Will: No, Soi, that's—that's not what I meant, I…
Will: (Shouldn't… shouldn't he have said something by now? Or sung, even?)
Will: (I wonder if he's still aslee—…)
Will: (No, wait—)
Will: (He—!)
[…UH-OH.]
Will: -sUDDENLY VERY PANICKED- (HE SPENT THE NIGHT HERE—! HIS STATUS SAID HE WAS IN LETHAL—!)
Will: MIKHAIL—
Mikhail: —? -Clearly concerned-
Will: WHERE IS CARDINAL?!

[Will couldn't remember the lab--their home--being this quiet. Oh, it never was, with the sheer amount of siblings under one roof--]
[It unsettled him.]
[It unsettled him very much.]
[Perhaps it was because of this and his struggles at the daunting tasks at hand that he, well...]
Will: Argh!
[...Lost his patience, for a bit.]
Soi: !
[Sanda had only seen his friend like this only one other time--and he knew this MUST have been for a good reason--Will was the most patient man he's ever known.]
Will: Blast it--!
Soi: Will?
[Will was quite literally pulling at his own hair, a frustrated expression across his usually gentle features.]
Will: I see NO pattern whatsoever! What in Tyson's name is behind this?!
Soi: Will, let's just--
Will: Just LOOK at this, Soi!
[Will brings up the virus coding again--all the samples from Pyro, Cryo, Dyna, and the RMDC server from Mikhail--...]
[It was clear as day to what it DID...]
[...But looking at it closely...]
[...Each sample was VASTLY different from the other.]
Will: We know what it DOES--exaggerate underlying negative coding and emotions and exploiting them that way--
Will: But looking at the samples--it's almost as if we're looking at FOUR different viruses instead of ONE!
Soi: --?!
[Will was right--each coding sample was... unique, in it's own way...]
Soi: What the...?
Will: It--It makes no SENSE! I would EXPECT the virus to leave SOME imprint or--something! Within the emotional matrix, but...!
Will: There is absolutely nothing there.
[…This rant did not end well for him.]

Soi: (Bless you, Call...!) Er--Yes, Will...it's been a hard while, and I don't think anyone would be very happy to know you've been running yourself ragged... (Especially Mikhail...ho boy...)
[And before Will could even open his mouth to argue--]
[CALL] //: Dr. White, please step away from the terminal. I am authorized to activate the fire sprinkler system within this lab.
Will: ......
[With a tired sigh, Will rises from his seat and follows Sanda out of the room, rubbing the corners of his darkened eyes...]
Will: ....I just...
Soi: Wiiiiillll....
[Sanda takes in a deep breath and sighs, crossing his arms worryingly. He KNEW that his best friend could get like this--feeling as if it was his duty to get important things done, especially when people were counting on him so much...]
[Sometimes Will would try TOO hard and burn himself out--]
[Always trying.]

Soi: I know you want to fix this--I do too, believe me--but we can't exactly do that if we're not even taking care of OURSELVES, right?
Will: ......

Will: .....-Sigh-
Will: ....
Will: I....yes. You're right...
Will: ...I just feel as if we aren't making any progress regarding the virus...and with the comms still down...!

Will: (Monstropolis...)
[It was a name that struck gravity into even the most flippant of the Wily and Cossack Numbers.
The full tale had not been told outright, but the pieces had come together over time to show that the reason things were as bad as they were in that world lay in the misery the city suffered—
First, under Tobias unwittingly TERRIFYING the nation, and then, a generation later…
…When the city in the sky came crashing down to earth…]
[The panic caused in both cases proved to be deadly, and was something Tobias came to feel was his fault as he had grown and finally understood what he had unwittingly done.
It was a very touchy topic and an incident that even the worst of Wily’s sons would want to be avoided.
…And it wasn’t hard to see why, when one considered…]

[…How eerily similar some of Avi’s latest broadcasts had been to the ones Tobias had put out…]
Soi: Oh no--Will--
Will: ......
Will: (Going after Aviator will most certainly bring up some VERY unpleasant cross references for the Angels--regarding Monstropolis, regarding Tobias...)
Will: (But there are no other Mighty Numbers located--and we MUST bring back communications across the country...)
Will: (WORSE-- I have no doubt Avi will be MORE than happy to broadcast the whole thing in his state...!)
Will: .....
Will: We...We have no choice, Soi.
Soi: But--the cross references--!
Will: ...We'll have to ask Beck to be extremely careful...
Will: ...And quite possibly not use Dynatron's ReXelection, to minimize the impact on the RMDC server...
Soi: ...Mm--but Avi is half weak to Dyna's form, isn't he?
Will: ...True.
[PING!]
[CALL] //: Shall I attempt to trace the source of the transmissions, Doctors?
Will: Please do--and bring them to the main line, if you will.

[MISSION DETAILS: MIGHTY NO. 6, AVIATOR, HAS CO-OPTED THE TELEVISION AND RADIO BROADCASTING CAPABILITIES OF THIS RADIO TOWER IN GEORGIA, BLOCKING COMMUNICATIONS ACROSS THE COUNTRY.]
[MISSION OBJECTIVES: LOCATE AND RESCUE MN.6, PURGE ALL HARMFUL MALWARE FROM SYSTEMS, PREVENT TOTAL AND PERMANENT COMMUNICATION BLACKOUT. SUB OBJECTIVE: MINIMIZE RMDC IMPACT.]
[Whistling, harsh winds, the sound of a familiar news jingle blaring over the speaker systems, and of course, Avi's persistent newscasts broadcasting over nearly all his feeds--]
[Beck was in the right place, alright...]
[As soon as he fully materialized, Call's voice crackled in his ears.]
Call: Attention: Beck has arrived at the tower. Mighty No. 6 must be transmitting from the apex.
Soi: Sorry to make you climb it on foot, Beck...but it's, uh, all part of the plan!
Will: That, and it was impossible to get him directly to the top with Avi jamming the signals to it...
Soi: Eheh....yes, that...
[MN.9] //: It's OK, guys. I've climbed Avi's tower dozens of times--it's just that, well--this is a lot bigger than that one, and not as windy, and there weren't any malfunctioning robots that want to kill me.
[Taking a deep breath, Beck looked up to the daunting tower above him, the top of which was hidden in the clouds. He could see various platforms of which he could use to ascend--but he could also hear the loud screeches of infected robots as well.]
Beck: Hang tight, Avi...
[There were ramps, at first, and lots of ladders--as well as more CherryDyn models than he liked to admit were comfortable. There was even a few models that he didn't recognize--such as signal amplifying robots that threw their dishes at him--]
Beck: O W--
[--especially when he was jumping around to avoid them in the first place.]
Beck: Hey--CUT IT OUT--
[REXELECTION: CRYOSPHERE.]
[Luckily, they couldn't throw their dishes around if they were frozen.]
[At first--it seemed he was making good progress...]
[...But it wasn't long until...]
[KSSSSSSSSSSST!]
"Ahem! Testing, testing. Check one, check, check two. Sibilance, Sibilance!"
Beck: --!
[And suddenly, from his right, as he approached one side of the tower--!]
[MN.2] //: ...Is...Is that a BLIMP? Where the cheese did Avi get a FREAKIN' BLIMP?!
[The blimp was huge--and had a giant screen on either side, displaying a live feed of Avi himself. The background showed nothing but clouds, so it was safe to assume he was flying somewhere over the top of the tower.]
Avi: And now, live from Avi News World Headquarters, continuing coverage of--! Bum da da daaa!~
Avi: NATION. IN. CRISIS!
Will: (Avi, please...!)
Avi: Let's take things over to our eye in the sky, Avi, for the latest traffic report! Avi?
Avi: Uh, as you can see, Avi, the robot rampage is not letting up! It's chaos out here! CHAOS!
[MN.2] //: Is he seriously talking to himself again, are you kidding--
Avi: Thanks, Avi--as you can see, this is a dark, dark day for squishy humans everywhere--but, ya know, that's because they were soft and helpless to begin with! Am I right or am I right? HA!
Avi: So I ask you, fellow viewers--
Avi: Will this be the end of our proud republic?
Avi: Or will a HERO emerge to save the day?!
Avi: Heh, well, for one, I already have something of an answer!~
[The screen transitions once more, and--]
Beck: ....!
[...Beck finds himself staring at his own bewildered face.]
Avi: IT'S SURE AS HECK ISN'T GONNA BE THIS GUY!
[PING!]
[MN.6] //: Oh, MAN, this is gonna be good--how's it going, Beckingsdale?
[MN.6] //: Nice of you to blow in from the western front! Heh, get it?
[MN.9] //: Avi--
[MN.6] //: Were you just SO excited to see big bro that you decided to skip 4 and 5? Or do you just don't CARE?
[MN.9] //: What--Of COURSE I care--!
[MN.1] //: Leave him ALONE, No. 6!
[MN.6] //: Eeeey, lookie here, it's Big Bro! Cooked up some tasty treats for me?
[MN.2] //: CUT THE SMALL TALK, AVI--WE KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING, HOVERMORON--!
[MN.6] //: Nah, not really! One sec--
<RMDC>: > ALERT: MNN-006 HAS BEEN RAISED TO THREAT LEVEL BLUE.
[Thiiiiis was not starting off so good.]
[The screen cuts off from Beck to Avi once more--]
Avi: Yup, as you can see, this guy thinks he can waltz up here and try to put our global campaign on hold--PERMANENT hold. That isn't gonna fly.
Avi: Why? Well--I'll show you all in bit, so stay tuned!
Avi: But whatever happens, Avi News will be there--your number one and ONLY source for ethical journalism!
Avi: We report, and YOU...eh...do whatever you want with it. Until next time, good night, and GOOD LUCK! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
[KSSSSSSSSSSST!]
[MN.6] //: AAAAAND SCENE! Little short and sweet, but we're on a tight schedule here.
[MN.9] //: Avi--PLEASE, listen to me--! You're malfunctioning, there's a virus in your systems and--
[MN.6] //: Hey, Becky. Interview time.
[MN.6] //: How many matches did you lose when you were on the team?
[MN.9] //: I...what?
[MN.6] //: Because you've got the biggest lose streak on RECORD, like--wow. I had no IDEA someone could be THAT lame. No WONDER Pyro kicked you out!
[MN.1] //: AVI--
[MN.6] //: And before you say ANYTHING, Big Bro, don't give me that 'for the good of the team' garbage. We all KNEW Beck just really sucked at combat and we couldn't afford to keep someone on him JUST to make sure he didn't get completely scrapped.
[MN.6] //: Real sad part of it is that he never really seemed to get any BETTER. Not for a good WHILE, at least.
[MN.6] //: Heck, he can't even FLY straight when he had MY form!
[MN.9] //: ........
[MN.6] //: Man, Cryo was right--you ARE a real runt.
[MN.6] //: You'll WHAT. Freeze me? Punch me in the face?
[MN.6] //: ...Typical.
[MN.6] //: Always with the threats--it's starting to get REAL old. I got enough of those already, so save your breath.
[MN.2] //: ...???
[Beck was already at the other side of the tower--there were some strong winds coming from the west, and part of him wondered if that was also Avi's doing somehow...]
[MN.6] //: But we're getting off point.
[MN.6] //: You don't mind if I...say, replay some of those lame matches over the air, do ya?~
[MN.9] //: --??
[MN.6] //: Ya know, just to give our viewers a little REMINDER that this is the short-stack that's trying to run around and save the whole world like he's some SUPERHERO or something. YAWN.
[Data fuzz.]
[…That familiar static again.
It died down, but…]
[Suddenly, music was playing.]
[And Avi CERTAINLY wasn’t the one playing it.]
[MN.6] //: --?
[MN.9] //: !
[MN.6] //: UGH, I THOUGHT that was fixed--
[MN.6] //: ....Wait a second--that's not part of my soundtrack--!
[It was an acoustic soundtrack—one that seemed…
…uncomfortably familiar.]
[It played through an entire cycle of two verses and refrains—wordless, though, making it even eerier—bebeats fore dying down and fading away.]
[MN.6] //: ....
[MN.6] //: Oooookay...
[MN.6] //: Gonna have to look into that after I'm done with you.
[MN.9] //: (Was...was that who I think it was...?)
[…They HAD warned about side effects…
But… Toby was still Offline, right?]
[MN.9] //: (If...if it was...but...oh no...)
[Fearing the worst--Beck climbs up the tower faster, using Cryo's form effectively disable and absorb the robots that stood in his way.]
Soi: ...!
Soi: Heads up, Beck! I think we found a faster way up the tower!
Beck: Whoa--really?
Soi: Grab that Hula-Heli hoop near the other side of the tower--you can use it to board the blimp airship and ride it to the top!
Will: --! Ah--! That'll work...
[There was a small robot with a large red light in the center, along with some fairly well-sized propellers on either side--they looked like they could support his weight.]
Will: This'll save us time--once you're at the top, you can get the jump on Avi!
[There was a bright yellow hoop for him to grab onto--the light on the Hula-Heli changed from red to blue once it felt the required weight achieved, and gently started to float over towards the direction of the blimp.]
Beck: (Don't look down, don'tlookdown--)
Beck: (Gotta minimize impact, just--close your eyes, yeah--)
[The ride ended rather quickly, though, and soon Beck felt his feet touch...wood?]
Soi: He's on the deck! He'll be safely up the tower in no time--
Will: --!!
Will: Don't count your atoms before they're smashed, Sanda--look!
[That...]
[That was another airship--but it had been outfitted with multiple CherryDyn models, loaded with missiles and weapons!]
Will: He's been spotted!
[KSSSSSST--]
[MN.6] //: More like ANTICIPATED, dear old Dad!
[MN.6] //: Did you REALLY think I wouldn't hear you, Sanda-Bag, and Miss Siri over there trying to HELP this waste of Xel?
Beck: Oh no--
[The front gun started to fire at Nine, it's large, single eye locking onto him--]
[REXELECTION: PYROGEN.]
[MN.6] //: --?
[MN.6] //: Whoops, sorry, I got a caller--I'll be RIIIIIGHT back!~
Will: (What...?)
{Some Time Later…}
Avi: WHOA--!!

Avi: What the--??!
[MEANWHILE, OUTSIDE--]
Beck: ....Oops...
Will: Oh goodness--!
[MN.2] //: BRO WHAT THE HECK??
[MN.9] //: IT WASN'T MY FAULT THE ATTACK AIRSHIP CRASHED INTO THE TOWER--
Soi: ...Well, at least the tower is still intact...

Will: It's a miracle the blimp is still airborne...
[MN.1] //: Next time, PLEASE don't over charge Burning Spirit like that--it really DOES have a wide blast radius--
"And now, Avi News traffic, from the Avi-1 eye-in-the-sky traffic copter!"
[....That...]
[...wasn't just from the feeds--!]
Avi: HEYO, AIRSHIP WRECKER.
[It was the Pungeon Master HIMSELF--dropping in from high above the clouds, twirling over once before hovering at a fair distance away from the blimp, a camera bot flying by his side.]
Beck: Avi!
Avi: We have an accident about to happen on the airship, Avi--
[He suddenly dove down, out of sight--]
[Beck dashed forward, hands gripping the railings of the blimp in order to look down for his brother...]
[WHOOSH--!]
Beck: --!!!
[Avi reappeared, alright--]
[With a whole squadron of aerial CherryDyn models--their missiles all pointed at Beck and the airship!]
Avi: A PIECE OF TRASH CAUSING TROUBLE--
Beck: WAH--!
[...........]
[.....Zzt.]
[Zzzzzzt.]
[BZZZZZZZZZZZZZT!]
[Without warning--a HUGE flash! The air is filled energy! Comms fill with static--!]
Beck: ?!?
[There is a BLAST of music over ALL the comms—]
Avi: Huh--?!
[The restored Electric Maiden threw a flurry of bits at the CherryDyns--each of them sticking magnetically--and with a snap of her fingers--]
[They shorted out, one by one, their blackened husks falling back down to Earth.]
[MN.1] //: DYNA!
Will: How did she even get out of the lab without any of us--??
Soi: Call??
Call: Dynatron insisted I block her signals and data once she came Online.
Avi: Ah--Uh...
Dyna: YOU--!!
Dyna: DO YOU HAVE A N Y IDEA HOW MANY PEOPLE YOU'RE HURTING?!
Avi: --?!
Avi: What?
Avi: (Who's...)

Beck: Dyna--how--when--
[Dyna just floated over to the blimp with a smile on her face, gently patting her little brother on his head with a poncho covered hand.]
Dyna: I woke up when you were already boarding the airship--Call noticed and filled me in.
Dyna: I dunno what Avi was doing during that time, but I aszzked Call to block my zzzsignalszz and data so he wouldn't notice. Good thing, too, you were almoszzt toast back there!

Dyna: Zzzsorry, Daddy.~
Dyna: But I don't have time to be moping.
Dyna: Lemmie get you off thiszzz thing and back to the tower, Mkay?~
Beck: Thanks, Dyna...!

[MN.2] //: SSSSSHHHHHUT UUUUUP--
[MN.9] //: Heh...
[...This was more like it...]
[This....this felt...familiar. All this.]
[Slowly--slowly, he was piecing his family back together again....]
[MN.9] //: Over there is fine, Dyna.
[He just had to keep going. No matter what.]
[He had to try.]
[Beck touched down on another platform on the tower--the winds were REALLY kicking up the higher he went, now--even Dyna had to compensate for the harsh gales.]
Dyna: You sure you don't want me to fly you to the top?!
Beck: Avi will be expecting that! I gotta climb this myself--I don't want him hurting you and regretting it later!
Beck: (He's already done enough for that...)
Dyna: ......
[There was a troubled look on her face--she didn't want to leave Beck to her ill brother, and...]
Dyna: .........
Dyna: Becky?
Beck: Yeah?
Dyna: Give him a REAL good shock for me. And Toby.
Beck: Uh...
Beck: I...I'll try....
Beck: But--you gotta get out of here before Avi comes back.
Will: Beck's right, Dyna--come home for now. Please.
Dyna: ......
Dyna: Fiiiine...
Call: Preparing Xel Transfer...
Beck: And Dyna?
Dyna: .....
Beck: We need to be there for Avi WHEN he comes home.
Beck: ....It was never his fault when...Toby...
Beck: ......
Beck: Please don't be mad at him.
Beck: Toby would be really sad if you guys were still fighting after this.
Dyna: ......
Dyna: Yeah, he...would, wouldn't he...
Dyna: .....Toby....
Beck: Toby was just trying to stop Avi...
Beck: .......
Beck: Please don't blame them...!
Dyna: ........
Dyna: -Siiiigh-
Dyna: I...mng. But ONLY if Avi apologizeszz.
Beck: Yeah, that won't be hard...
Dyna: .....You bring him back home, OK?
Dyna: ....Avi might be a dork but he'szzz OUR dork.
Dyna: ....I...I miszzs him too...
Beck: Yeah. I will. I swear.
Call: Xel Transfer Initiated.
Dyna: Zzstay zzsafe...!
Beck: Got it, Dyna...!
[A flash of yellow and purple, and then, nothing.]
Call: Xel Transfer complete. Welcome back, No. 3.
Cryo: -GLOMP TACKLE, SIS SIS SIIIIIIIIIIS--
Pyro: -Excuse us ladies, we're just gonna collect the both of you in a big hug now.-
Dyna: ~<3
Beck: .....
[Slowly, one by one.]
[Beck once again looked to the sky.]
Beck: Almost there...
Beck: Avi...!
Beck: Ready or not--!
Beck: Here I come!
——————————————————
[Several more levels of the tower lay above--there were even less platforms, but more Hula-Heli's around--it made climbing up a little easier--although he had to shoot the robots that hung from them first. They gave him Absorption boosts, however, and filled both of his Xel Stocks--he decided to save those for later.]
[Eventually, he reached the right side of the tower--]
Beck: Ngh--!
[The wind speed had increased dramatically here--what was going on with the weather...?]
Beck: (It--can't be Avi, can it?)
Beck: Oh no come ON--
Avi: This just in: bad guy spotted at the west side of the radio tower! Bots are in pursuit!
Beck: In pur--
[Following Avi was another squadron of CherryDyn Models--, and not only that, there were MORE of them that littered the platforms ahead!]
Beck: --!!
Will: Beck--there's another Hula-Heli just above you! Grab it!
[Nine quickly jumped to latch onto the hoop by his hands, and he was rapidly carried of towards the nearest platform.]
Beck: (Argh, these winds...!)
Avi: … …
Avi: And now to Avi for the weather! :D
Avi: THANKS, AVI, WE GOT STRONG WINDS OUT THERE TODAY, BE CAAAAREFUUUL!
Beck: Are you the one doing this, Avi?!
[Avi merely cackled as he sped off into the sky again, vanishing from sight.]
Beck: A V I !
[With a small groan of frustration, Beck locked down his visor over his face for some protection against the wind--he wouldn't quite put it past Avi to have gained some control over wind currents, if the virus DID grant him that...]
Beck: Hang on, bro...
[The platforms eventually led him further out--and then back to the tower, where he used Cryo's form to freeze more than a few CherryDyn bots--]
Beck: --!!
[Wait--was that a door? Leading inside! FINALLY, some shelter from these unforgiving winds!]
Beck: I am so taking the stairs--
[......]
[...Or...not. More ladders.]
Beck: UGH--!
Beck: Ladders, why ladders, I would have taken more Hula-Helis...
[All Beck could do was grumble under his breath while climbing up the first set.. And many, MANY more after that.]
Beck: WHY ARE THERE SO MANY LADDERS, AVI DOESN'T EVEN NEED THEM--
Beck: I'm never using another ladder ever, uuuuugh--
Soi: Oof...poor Beck...
[After climbing who know HOW many more levels--just how high WAS this tower?--Beck stepped over the last rung into a long, open hallway that lead back outside....]
Beck: ---!!!
[With no open platforms OR Hula-Helis in sight. It was just open air.]
Beck: Wha--!
Beck: Dad--there's no way to--!
Will: Hold on--!
Soi: Look around, Beck--are you sure there isn't anything you can use?
Beck: Ack--no...!
Beck: All there is is a lot of--
Beck: --!!!
[The air currents--they weren't blowing left or right--]
[But up.]
Beck: .......
Beck: ............
[.....Up....]
[....Maybe... maybe...]
[MN.3] //: ....Becky? You OK? (Why did he go quiet all of a zzsudden...?)
[MN.1] //: .....!!!
[MN.1] //: BECK WHATEVER YOU'RE THINKING, DON'T--!!
[MN.3] //: -DATA WHY IS EVERYONE PANICKY ALL OF A SUDDEN--?!?-
Will: BECK--!
Soi: DON'T--!
Beck: Guys I'm really sorry in advance--
[He took a huge step back...]
[MN.3] //: ...wait wait BECK--WHAT ARE YOU DOING--
[--and jumped--?!]
[He started glowing at the peak of his jump--he was going into an AcXelarate Dash--!]
[....Wait--]
[Something was different.]
[He moved rapidly left, like in a normal dash--but his form, his Xels--]
[Like back in the Turbine room, they had changed mid-dash, but instead of compressing--they expanded. ]
[So much so that with the current wind speed--]
[Instead of falling --the winds propelled him upwards!]
Will: ...!!
Soi: What the--....
[Once he reaches the end of his dash--he does so AGAIN, this time in the other direction, to his right--and the same process occurred once more, propelling him up and up with the wind acting as a sort of sail...]
[MN.1] //: I...??
[MN.2] //: He's... gliding...!?
Beck: (--It's working--!)
[MN.3] //: -BZZZ, HOW IS HE DOING THAT, WHAT EVEN--
Will: He changed his dash--his own Xel Structures... (Again...this is twice now...)
Will: (He can't be....unless...)
Will: (It's...already started--?)
[With the unlimited uses his Dash ability had, he could glide up the side of the tower safely, as long as he didn't let up...]
Beck: --! (Hey--a ledge!)
[Not a platform, but it will do.]
Beck: Ngh--
[It looked like there was another just above it--and another--]
Beck: Come on, one platform, that's all I ask--
[....!]
[Hula Heli--!]
Beck: FINALLY--
[Jump--ride to another platform, thank heavens--]
Beck: .....
[Wait why was the world going up--]
Beck: --!!!
[Beck dashed and glided away before the single platform that had graced him lost it's propulsion and fell--]
Beck: (ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!)
Will: .....
Will: He...He's going to be there a while, isn't he...?
Soi: I...maybe...??
['Maybe' was an understatement. With temporary platforms and limited hanging points, it took at LEAST another 10 minutes to climb up the tower--mostly due to the fact that the east side of the upper tower walls was completely covered in Xel disrupting spikes.]
[But at last...]
[At last...]
[At long last, another entrance back into the tower...]
[And the Patch bot waiting at the final Hula Heli that would take him to the apex.]
Beck: Thanks, Sunny...
Sunny: (^^)
[After unloading her cargo--which was much needed Xel Storage Cubes--she flew off.]
Beck: .....
Beck: Avi....
Beck: I'm here...
[Click.]
[Wrrrrr....]
Will: -Shaky sigh-
Will: S-Soi--...
Soi: I got you, Will. Don't worry--he can do it...
Soi: He's got to...
—————————————————
[Every television—working, that is—and every radio channel in the country....]
[Avi was broadcasting himself on all of them. Every single one.]
Avi: And now, live from atop Avi News Headquarters, continuing coverage of-- Dun Dun Dun Dun--!
Avi: TOWER. OF. TERROR!
[Kkkkkkk…]
[Those with a radio would hear an odd, barely audible static overlay. And those with a video screen?
…An even stranger visual glitch…]
[…Or at least… that’s what one had to assume of the vague, ghostly pixie-sized ball of light that seemed to be hovering behind Avi’s left shoulder.]
[Both things kept blinking in and out, so… clearly they had to be just bugs in the system.
Clearly.]
[The shot zoomed out, and one could hear the unrelenting winds that tore at the top of the tower--which was only three platforms, really...]
[Standing right in the middle of them was Beck, his expression...not hard, per se, but...]
[One could take it as either anger, determination, or resolve. Or all three. ]
[Avi didn't seem to be bothered at all by the unfavorable conditions--in fact, as he and his camera spun around the smaller Mighty Number...]
Avi: And now to Avi for the weather!
[And--the VOLUME, WHEN DID IT GET SO HIGH--]
Avi: THANKS, AVI, WE GOT STRONG WINDS OUT THERE TODAY, BEEE CAREFULLLL!~
Beck: Argh--!
[The… static kept going IN and OUT and IN and OUT—]
[At first it seemed RANDOM, but—]
[Wait was that MORSE CODE IN STATIC—]
Avi: --... ... ...
Avi: Ladies and Gentlemen, please be advised that we are experiencing some technical difficulties during our broadcast, so please bear with us...
Avi: (Stupid annoying--!!)
[KKKKKKKKKKKK—!]
Avi: UGH--WILL YOU SHUT UP?!
Beck: --!! I GOT THIS, TOBY--!!
Beck: I'LL SAVE HIM--!!
[And then, the form became more visible.]
[Only MUCH larger than the LAST time Beck had seen a Robosoul—life sized, really—!]
Beck: --!!!
Avi: --?!?
[He also didn’t look nearly as COMPLETE—as if he really WERE just a ghost—
—though other than that brief appearance, possibly out of sheer defiance, he only left one thing behind—a fading, echoing lyric—]
“But to your aid An unlikely friend! Programmed to Fight ’til the very END!”
Beck: (TOBY--!!)
Avi?: Y O U--!!
Beck: (Wh-what? That doesn't sound like Avi—!)
Avi?: YOU'RE the GLITCH!
[He would immediately regret that statement.]
<RMDC>: > CROSS-REFERENCE FOUND.
[A song BLARED over the comms.]
“We are the city We are the heart We are the life force We are the SPARK!”
Avi: GRRR...!
Avi: I don't have TIME to deal with you now--WAIT YOUR TURN...
[He turns his attention to Beck, who already had his arm cannon primed and ready for battle.]
Avi: News Flash: Exclusive footage caught at Avi News World Headquarters of Mighty No. 9....
Avi: MOMENTS BEFORE HE FELL TO HIS TRAGIC DEATH!
[A MUCH harsher blast of—not MUSIC, but—]
[Cold.]
[It was so cold and wet and dark—]
[It was as if the CENTRAL CORE were EXPOSED.]
Avi: NGH--!
Avi: ....Heh...
Avi: Ooo, sorry Beck-am, your segment is getting cut!
[There was a HORRIFIC screech at that—
Followed by INCREDIBLE PAIN beyond measure.
Luckily for Avi, it was short-lived, but OW—!]
Avi: NNNGH--!!
[Beck took this chance to jump and land a few shots while Avi was distracted--which causes him to stumble back and fly JUST out of reach.]
Avi: Oh, you little—!
[Static Morse.]
[LOUDER static.]
Avi: SHUT IT, SPARKY. I'M TRYING TO GET THINGS D O N E HERE--!
[He shifted into his Jet Plane mode, banking hard left and around the tower--]
[Wait--]
[That's too close--]
Beck: AHHH--!
[Beck dashed out of the way just in time to avoid being rammed by Avi--if he got hit at those speeds, he wouldn't just fall, he'd get launched off the tower.]
Avi: GH...!
Avi: NO THANKS TO YOU AND YOUR LAME BORG SET UP--!!
Avi: I'll have to DO something about that L A T E R--
[WOAH. A sudden erratic shift in Avi’s electrical flow, OW—]
Avi: ARGH--!
Beck: AVI--!!
[Avi was flying a little erratically, now; for a moment it seemed as if--]
Beck: —!!! PLEASE, DON'T—
[Avi's flying was erratic enough to show that he was hardly in full control of his movement—Tobias was already making good on his threat. If this kept up…!]
Beck: STOP! I CAN DO THIS—! LET ME SAVE HIM!
[There was a twisted, garbled, static-filled cry of despair.]
[Avi's helicopter blades suddenly locked up.]
[There was a scream—]
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUUUUUUUUUUGGGGHHH—!!!"
[—and Beck had to dive out of the way as Avi shot back up into the sky.]
Avi: I swear I'm gonna...gonna...
[There was no response from the fragment of Toby’s mind—presumably, it had fainted when it seemed Avi was about to fall.]
Avi: You....don't GET IT...
Beck: .....!
Avi: All I ever wanted was to make people laugh. And smile, and feel GOOD about themselves--
Avi: That's what I am--a SUPPORT unit! SUPPORT!
Avi: AND YOU ALL SAY--SAY I'M ANNOYING--
Avi: A BLABBERMOUTH--A BOTHER--!!
Avi: WELL, EXCUUUUUUUUSE ME FOR TRYING TO MAKE THINGS BETTER WHEN THEY AREN'T!
Avi: EXCUSE ME FOR BEING WHO I A M--
Avi: EXCUSE ME FOR BEING WHAT I WAS B U I L T TO BE--!!
<RMDC>: > CROSS-REFERENCE FOUND.
[But the music played did not hamper Avi this time—rather, it only seemed to REFLECT some sort of bitter torment and sorrow.]
“No one in this world can understand Who I am— That is why I’m my own biggest fan!”
Avi: YOU DON'T GET IT--YOU ALL N E V E R HAVE--!!
“Do you know what it’s like to be built this way? With only the power to push others away?”
Avi: SO IF I CAN'T MAKE PEOPLE LAUGH--IF I CAN'T BE WHO I AM--IF I CAN'T BRING GOOD THROUGH WHAT I LIKE TO DO--
“For if I can’t walk among them Then I will walk the world alone There’ll be a fire in the sky And your doom will rain down!”
Avi: N O. O N E. C A N!
[In his sheer rage, demonic flames and voice taking over, Avi raced around the sky trailing violet flames, the bomb panels on his feet unfolding--]
Avi: SPECIAL DELIVERY, TRASH FACE!
Beck: --!!
[An incoming air strike--!]
[Beck had two options--Dash Glide out of danger, or shoot the bombs before they hit the ground...]
Beck: (Avi's bomb range is wide enough--better dodge--!)
[Jumping from the middle, he dashed left and right, the bombs passing harmlessly in between--although they certainly rocked the tower beneath them!]
Beck: (No--! If he keeps doing that--!)
Beck: DAD--?!
Beck: No--!!
[No advice from family. No input from Toby now, either.
It was all up to him…!]
Avi: Headline: Boss attacks Beck!
[He heard machine gun fire--and suddenly, Avi again, on the opposite side, doing a offensive fly by--!]
[The shots nail him, and he is knocked onto his back--]
Avi: Correction--
Avi: T W I C E !~
[When-- when did he get upside down--]
[More machine gun fire! No, it wasn't BECK that was upside down--it was Avi!]
Beck: HRK--
[ACCESSING XEL STOCK 1...]
[XEL ABSORBED.]
[Not even halfway through and he already had to use a Xel Stock--]
[Not. Good.]
Beck: ......
Beck: (Avi....)
Avi: Aw, what's wrong, loser?! Can't handle my air raids?!
Beck: Avi...
Beck: Stop.
[.......? Beck's....tone....]
Beck: Just let me SAVE you...please...
Beck: I don't want to hurt you any more than I HAVE to.
Avi: Oh, so now YOU'RE making threats?
Beck: Last chance, Avi--
<RMDC>: > CROSS-REFERENCE FOUND.
“I stand before a line in the sand The fight lies ahead The fate in my hands Today the end begins
One step and the battle is born The road that I walk Is a gathering storm Today the end begins!”
Avi: WHOA, orders? I'M the one that's--
Beck: [ S T A N D.]
[-PING!-]
[COMMAND CONFIRMED.]
Avi: --!?!?
Avi: What...why aren't my weapons--?!
[REXELECTION: DYNATRON ]
Beck: AVI!
Avi: Wh--I...-
[XEL ABSORBED.]
Avi: ACK--THAT--STINGS--
Beck: Almost there--
Avi: YOU--YOU WON'T...!
Beck: I can and I WILL--!!
Beck: I SWORE I WOULD SAVE YOU--
Beck: I SWORE TO EVERYONE--!
Beck: I SWORE IT!
Beck: SO FOR O N C E IN YOUR L I F E, AVIATOR--
Avi: Ah--
[..........]
"Here we are, Becko!"
"Nnnnngh I don't wanna look I don't wanna look--"
"Aw, don't be scared, bro, we're OK! I'd never let you go at THIS height."
"WE A R E UP HIGH, I KNEW IT--"

"Now onto my surprise!"
"Surprise...?"
"Hold on to your goggles, Beckoroni--"
Avi: Wha---
Avi: I....
Avi: I...Is that you, Beckles...?

[The green glow continued—only… now it was shifting to…
…some sort of… electrified yellow?]
Beck: --?!?
[THAT WAS NEW--]

“ ….. ”
“Listen bro.”
“… -Whine- ”
[…Wait… this wasn’t one of the memories HE had with Avi…]
“I mean, we don't BLAME you for thinking that way, just...what ELSE are you supposed to think, right? From your point of view.”
“ … I was just made to work in a power plant. Dad was the one who taught me about radio.”
[This had to be…!]
“I… I really liked Dr. King, especially.”
“ ..........”
“He… he was a really good speaker, and people listened to him. And then things started to get better. Because people were working together.”
“-Fervently- I still think we can do it…!”
“I think… I think if humans weren’t afraid… things could be okay.”
“They… can be so kind. So good. I know they can do it.”
“…Especially…”
“ ........ Heh…”
“Especially now that we met you guys.”

The first thing was a wave of abstract data.
It was very basic, not even having words—the family was overjoyed to hear from them again. To know their friends were alive, that they were well—that they had been rescued, they had been SAVED!
There was concern and worry, reassurance and comfort—all unique and individual to all those who sent it… which was pretty much everyone who was awake.]

FIGHT! Enigma Vs Masa!
Intro Quote(Versus): …So it begins. Stay in the present, or pay the price, Time Lord.
Intro Quote(Team Up): Hmph. It is one thing for the likes of them to defy the whims of fate and tides of time, but this approaches borderline stupidity.
Taunt: Stop daydreaming about the realities where you’re winning this fight and start making an effort in THIS one.
Special Attack: {At high enough speeds, time is relative!}
Assist: Lay out the dotted line.
Ultimate Attack: {Your thread is about to get shorter!} ((Referring to the classic Greek literature regarding the thread of life, subjected to the shears Atropos used to seal the ultimate fate of mortals.))
Ultimate Team Attack: {Seal off their escape!}
Win Quote(Versus): {An honorable fight. I am certain your father will be proud.}
Win Quote(Team Up): {You fought well. We’d best leave this place before the others start pestering…}
Lose Quote(Versus): Ha…. {It would seem… I cannot fight fate…}
Lose Quote(Team Up): -Suspicious squint- … ((…Heh, he’d be cynically wondering whether it was “supposed” to happen this way, and what the implications of that would be))
Knock Out Quote(Team Up Self): Gh…! Go—! {You must carry this to the conclusion!}
Knock Out Quote(Team Up Partner): {How is this possible?!}

//This blog is going to be repurposed to be a story-oriented blog. The characters from sirensniper will be moved over to join the crew on @mowseries.
This is a placeholder style announcement. Proper explanation and frills will come after I have things set up.
Not sure how much good this will do, given it’s about to be buried under nearly 200 more posts.

{Several Hours Later…}
[Mikhail sat back with a sigh.]
Mikhail: {Finally, I’m done…}
[Coding the summary condenser had taken longer than he would have liked. However, it seemed to be working—he couldn’t say for sure until Felix came in with the temporary power core.]
Mikhail: -Stands, taking off his glasses to pinch the bridge of his nose- Ugh… {I hope he comes soon, or at least calls—}
[PING!]
[CALL] //: Doctor, there is a call on our emergency line–
Mikhail: ({Perfect timing!}) -Interrupts- Patch him through, Call.
[He stood, gathering up his supplies with his back to the monitor.
Jack, meanwhile, was helping around with minor chores, like sweeping up after the good Doctor—he briefly flicked his gaze to the monitor when he heard Mikhail accepting the call, and…]
Jack: …..
Jack: Doc?
Jack: Why is the CherryDyn logo on the big screen…?
Mikhail: What?
[He turns around just in time for the call to come through.
He was immediately disappointed. Rather than a message from Felix in the Meadow, it appeared to be from none other than CherryDyn’s chief executive officer.
His expression quickly changed to being cross.]
Mikhail: {Computer, end call!}
[The call shut off before the man on the other line could even say a word.]
Jack: –Dude–I mean, Doc–
Jack: That was Gregory Graham–
Mikhail: -Crossly- I don’t have time to deal with CherryDyn and their dragons. Things are bad enough as it is without him making them worse.
[PING!]
[CALL] //: Attention–we are once again receiving an urgent call from CherryDynamics.
Mikhail: =___=“ -Frustrated- -Motions for Jack to move out of sight- Put him through.
Jack: (…This cannot be good.)
[As Jack quietly makes himself scarce, the CherryDyn logo once again fills the main monitor for a few seconds, before cutting to a man in a sharply dresses purple business suit, bright violet eyes, and neatly combed blond hair–save for one strand that seemed to stick out rather largely.
Needless to say, Gregory Graham looked less than pleased.]
Graham: You don’t just hang up on an emergency line, you know.
Graham: And who are YOU supposed to be–I would think that Sanda would be more aware of who was handling his feeds!
Graham: Where is he?
Mikhail: Doctor Sanda is currently otherwise engaged.
Graham: Tch.
Graham: (The nerve of this…)
Graham: I demand to speak with him. This is an urgent matter that I MUST discuss with someone that, at the very least, can provide some actual assistance.
[Mikhail listened quietly as Gregory Graham began to rant. The lights of the lab gave his glasses a sinister glare.]
Mikhail: …
Graham: Did you not hear me?
Graham: Stop muddling around and go GET him!
Mikhail: …Hmm.
Mikhail: No.
[The screen blipped back to a screensaver as he hung up a second time.]
Jack: (Oh my God–)
Jack: -Whispers, even though the call is not active- Doc, I don’t think this is a good idea—
Mikhail: -Still honestly doesn’t care- I have worse things than him to worry about. -Sits down, pulling over a notepad- He honestly doesn’t scare me, not in the slightest.
Jack: But—
[The door to the lab suddenly lurches open, revealing Soichiro walking inside with a breakfast bagel in his hand. Either he was still in the process of waking up or he didn’t exactly care for the lab rules at this point either.]
Soi: -Yawn- But what…?
Soi: I heard talking… was someone calling us? Who was it?
[Mikhail was at a counter, writing out a note by now.]
Mikhail: -Without looking up- No one important.
Soi: Oh–
[PING!]
[CALL] //: Doctor, we are receiving another urgent call from CherryDynamics.
Soi: ….
Soi: …
Soi: -Whirls around- No one important?!
Mikhail: -Grumbles- {The man is a liar and worse, so no, not worth our time.}
[He seemed more engaged in his note writing than anything else.]
Soi: For Tyson’s sake, Mikhail, I KNOW, but he’s still–d'oh, never mind–!
Soi: Patch it through, Call– -Tosses bagel at Jack- And make sure the others don’t hear this–
[CALL] //: Yes, Doctor.
[The line fizzes once again.]
Graham: Sanda–Sanda?!
Graham: Ah, Sanda–thank goodness. Greg Graham here.
Soi: -Ahem-
Soi: Mr. Graham. What a… pleasant… surprise… to hear from you…
Graham: Drop the act, Sanda.
Soi: –….
Graham: You don’t like me and I do not like you–we can at least agree on that much.
Soi: (No kidding.)
Graham: You need to get a better handle on your interns. The nerve of that one…
Soi: (Cripes, Mikhail…)
[Mikhail tuned them out. While Sanda attempted to calm Gregory down, the Russian Doctor stepped aside out of sight and walked over to Jack. He had the note in his hand—and an amulet.]
Mikhail: Jack Parker?
Jack: –?
Jack: Y–Yeah, Doc? What is it?
Mikhail: You mean, why are we being called? I’m not entirely sure myself. But I am fairly certain about one thing.
[He glanced back at the door to the lab with a faint grimace.]
Mikhail: …
[He returned his attention to Jack.]
Mikhail: You won’t want to remain around here for much longer. The Secretary of Defense is in the building.
Jack: … ….
Jack: Fraggin’ hell…
[Mikhail holds up a hand as if to stop him from letting panic build any further.]
Mikhail: He doesn’t know you’re here. There are no records of you entering, since you came by the teleporters.
[He handed over the amulet.]
Mikhail: This is a teleportation amulet. It will take you directly to the Meadow.
Jack: !
Jack: (…He wants me to leave before…)
Mikhail: Once you get there, there are a few things I need for you to do.
[He handed over the note.]
Mikhail: I’ve written them all down in here. Just follow the instructions, and tell Felix to leave the swords behind, if you see him.
Jack: ….
[Jack glances down at the note, giving it a quick read–and confusion fills his face.
There were instructions to see to Kalinka, and to start up the database—to send over one singular set of files for printing, and then to cut the communication off again.]
Jack: But, Doc—
Mikhail: It will make more sense once you get there. Just… please do this for me, alright? It’s very important. For Tobias, for Cardinal, for you—
[By now, the conversation was once again getting louder.]
Mikhail: …You should go.
Jack: ….. (I shouldn’t leave the Doc like this, but…)
Jack: (I can’t help from behind a cell, or worse.)
Jack: Okay.
Jack: …Good luck, Doc.
[Jack looks reluctant as he dons the amulet.]
Jack: Tell the Xel kid I said bye for now or something.
Mikhail: I will. I’m sure you’ll get the chance to speak soon enough. -Frowns, looking in the direction of the yelling- Stay safe.
[Pressing the center of the amulet transported Jack away to safety in the characteristic swirl of 0s and 1s associated with the Ambassador’s magic. Mikhail stepped back into view of the screen, his expression becoming sullen again.]
[To his annoyance, Gregory Graham clearly still hadn’t reached a point, and was still complaining, not even letting Sanda get much of a word in.
Seeing his friend and colleague treated such a way after all they had been through was starting to make the Russian feel exceedingly nasty—it wore right past his submissive baggage of the past and to his protective, fatherly nature.
There’s a saying that applies to people when they’re frustrated, and it was oh so apt for him—
Don’t poke the bear.]
[Mikhail sighed and walked over to the console again. He looked very annoyed.]
Mikhail: If all you’re going to do is insult people, then you can do it on your own time. We have more important things to attend to.
Graham: Grr–
Graham: This doesn’t concern you! What is this upstart even doing in this room, Sanda, I don’t even see any staff identification on him!
Graham: I doubt you even know the gravity of the situation–
[Mikhail slammed a newspaper right into the screen.]
[His glasses slid slightly, causing the glare to leave to reveal an even fiercer glare beneath them.]
Mikhail: On the contrary, Graham—I know a great deal more than you think. You want gravity? You want to play serious? Fine—try THIS on for size. I know you are ultimately behind all of this, and someday I will prove it. Do you understand me?
Graham: Excuse me?!
Soi: (Baaaah, I can’t handle this anymore–)
Soi: (I’ve got to get Will–!)
[Mikhail slapped the newspaper down, paying no attention as Sanda hurried out of view to find Will.]
Mikhail: Do everyone a favor and go away. We have more important things to deal with than your mind-boggling incompetence.
[He ends the call abruptly.]
[MEANWHILE, WILL’S OFFICE.]
Soi: WILL–!
[Soi knocked on Will’s office door as hard as he could, until the Doctor abruptly opened it with a panicked whisper–]
Will: Shhht–!
Will: Do you WANT to let Mr. Donald know I’m here–Hey–!
[Sanda didn’t waste time pushing Will inside, locking the door behind him.]
Will: Soi–?
Soi: Will–
Soi: Graham is on our emergency line.
Will: –!?!?
Will: Wh–What…?
Soi: Will–
Soi: Mikhail is dealing with him right now, but I don’t think they’re–
Will: YOU LEFT MIKHAIL ALONE WITH GRAHAM?!
Soi: He just–sort of–uh.
Soi: (…Oh dear–)
Will: Nononono–
[Will paces around the room in a clear panic, biting his nails and holding onto his hair with a grip that threatened to tear a good chuck of it off.]
Will: (Why why why, why is HE calling, why did Mikhail have to answer, why is this HAPPENING AGAIN–)
Will: Soi–
Will: Wh–What if he–?!
Soi: No, Will–
Soi: G-Graham hasn’t mentioned you yet–and all Mikhail is doing is scolding and hanging up on him, at best…
Soi: I…It’s kind of getting worse, though, and–I…I don’t think I can handle it, Will, I’m sorry–
Soi: He–he listens to you, Will, so–m-maybe–
Will: NO!
[Soi is taken aback at Will’s sudden outburst, full of fear and guilt–]
Will: I can’t–
Will: I can’t ever face Graham again, Soi, you know that–!
Will: I don’t…
Will: I…
[……]
Will: I don’t trust myself.
Will: I don’t…I don’t have the strength t-to…
[Will shakes–his entire body is shivering as he sits on the ground, one hand covering his face.]
Will: A-All this time…
Will: I…I thought…
Will: I thought that part of my life was over and DONE with, Soi…
Will: Why–Why is it happening again–?
Soi: Will…
Will: What if he…
Will: What if he recognizes me?
Will: Right there, in the open, where Mikhail is?
Will: What if my façade is not GOOD enough?
Will: …What if I’m not good enough?
Soi: Will–
Soi: Come on, Will.
Soi: You even fooled me, at first.
Soi: And I’m sure I’m at least twice as smart as Graham ever will be.
Will: —….
Soi: ….
Soi: Listen, Will…
Soi: I…I can’t imagine what you’re going through right now. I mean, I can, but…
Soi: …I haven’t been through what you have. Not then…
Soi: But…
Soi: I’m your friend, remember?
Soi: No matter what happens.
Soi: And no matter what the world thinks.
Soi: I’ll always be in your corner.
Soi: And that’s a fact.
Will: ….
Soi: Whatever we have to face…
Soi: We’re doing it together.
Soi: I know you…
Soi: The REAL you.
Soi: Better than anyone else.
Soi: So believe me when I say that you are good enough, Will!
Soi: If you can fool me, and the entire world…
Soi: Then you can fool someone like Graham.
Soi: And…
Will: ….
Will: But what about Mikhail?
Will: And my own children?
Soi: …..
Soi: Mikhail’s been working non-stop trying to fix Cardinal, and the Mighties are all asleep.
Soi: We… we can worry about them later. (Assuming Mikhail survives this, even…. Oof…)
Soi: Right now…
Soi: Right now, I…
Soi: We need you, Will.
Will: …
Soi: I promise–
Soi: The second things go south, I’ll cover for you.
Soi: And we have the Meadow, if we need to run.
Soi: I promised I wouldn’t let anything happen to you, remember?
Will: …..
Will: Yes…
Will: I…remember…
Will: All those years ago…
Soi: Hmm-Hmm.
Soi: I know things seem bad, but…
Soi: Nothing is ever going to hurt you like that again, Will, I’m going to make sure of that–!
Soi: So don’t you worry about a thing, okay? ^^ Mikhail and I got your back.
———————
Mikhail: Just… stay strong, alright? We’ll make it through this. I promised you that, remember?
Mikhail: I intend to keep to that.
———————
Will: ……
Will: …
-*-*-*-*-
Mikhail: I’m sorry, Will…
Mikhail: It was for good reason, and I’m prepared to pay the price for it.
[…]
Mikhail: Between everyone’s efforts, we all made it out alive—and that is all I could have hoped for, so…
Mikhail: I am willing to pay.
[…]
Mikhail: Such… such an action is…
Mikhail: …not something easily forgiven.
Mikhail: …I must… I have to answer for this, sooner or later. It’s the right thing to do.
Mikhail: I’m sorry, William…
Mikhail: After all this time, after all you’ve done for me… I’ve gone and done something terrible, something that places you in danger.
Mikhail: I certainly won’t let anyone put that onto you.
Mikhail: -Places a hand to Will’s face- You’re like a cousin, or… or even brother to me. And I know this is hard enough on you as it is.
[…]
Mikhail: But you…
Mikhail: You’ve been doing such good work, you… you’re already under enough stress as it is… you should definitely not be hounded by the things I’ve done using your equipment. The things my nephews have done throughout this whole mess…
-*-*-*-*-
Soi: Where would you be without me, eh?
Soi: Up the creek with no paddle, that’s what! ^^
-*-*-*-*-
Will: ……
Soi: –…Um. W-Will?
Soi: (He’s not moving…Oh, God, did he pass out from fright–?!)
Will: No.
Soi: –?
Will: No…
Will: N-No more running…
Will: I…
Will: I can’t stand this anymore.
Soi: Will–?
Will: Watching you and Mikhail take so much for my sake when…
Will: Standing up FOR me…
Will: I…
Will: I can’t watch you do that for me, Soi.
Will: I can’t–it…hurts.
Will: Because YOU don’t deserve that, and neither does Mikhail–!
[There’s a strange, sharp edge to Will’s voice, one that doesn’t quite belong in his tone, yet it oddly fits…rather unnervingly.
And it’s all too familiar to Soi.]
Soi: –!
Will: You…you and Mikhail…
Will: You’ve given up so much for my sake…
Will: It’s…
Will: Unfair.
Will: I can’t do this anymore.
Will: I can’t watch both of you take blows just because I cannot.
Will: I…
[He stands.]
[There is a familiar fire in Will’s eyes, one that Soi hadn’t seen in…]
Will: I can’t let that…that wretched excuse of a human being hurt anyone like HE hurt ME–!
Soi: !
Soi: (You…?)
Will: I can’t run from this anymore…
Will: I might as well start now rather than never.
[Will’s voice drops to a growl.]
Will: Starting with Greg.
Soi: ……
[Soi seems kind of…bewildered, for a moment.]
Soi: ….
Soi: Eheh…
[But then he begins to laugh a little.]
Soi: Ooof…
Soi: I forgot how scary you can be when you get like that…
Soi: Jeez…
Will: –…..
Will: I…
[Once Soi said that, all traces of darkness left Will’s gaze, replaced with a sheepish uncertainty.]
Will: I–I’m sorry–
Will: I…didn’t mean to lose it like–
Soi: -Laughs-
Soi: Aw, it’s okay. At this rate, I almost feel sorry for Graham!
Soi: ….
Soi: Almost. ^^
Soi: Heh.
Soi: I’m proud of ya, Will.
Will: –…
Soi: Now, uh…
Soi: We should probably get back before Mikhail sends one of his kids after him or…something…
Soi: Unless you need a–
Will: No.
[Will straightens out his hair and his lab coat, taking a few deep breathes.]
[This would be the first he’s faced Graham in…not enough time.]
Will: ….
Will: I’m ready.
Soi: Good!
Soi: I’m right behind you. ^^
Will: Heh…
{Soon…}
[As Soi and Will bustled into the lab, they could hear what was clearly the tail end of a conversation.]
“Learn to take responsibility for your actions.”
[Mikhail wasn’t even looking at the screen, instead checking stuff off a clipboard.]
Mikhail: Listen to a word of advice from a SCIENTIST, Graham—do NOT experiment with things you cannot personally control. This is your fault.
Graham: My fault?!
Graham: You think I would put this great country of ours at risk like this?! You listen here, you idiotic–
Mikhail: Not interested.
BLIP!
Soi: (….Whoa. How many times has he done that now?)
Will: …..
Will: (You haven’t changed at all, have you.)
Will: What is going on?
Mikhail: -Dryly- I’m still waiting for Felix to call back, but the line appears to be busy.
Will: …But…Soi told me that CherryDyn is calling–?
[PING!]
[CALL] //: Correct, Doctor. CherryDyn’s CEO Gregory Graham is calling our emergency once again as we speak.
Mikhail: Tcheh.
[He walks over to wait by a printer.]
Will: Mr. Graham?
Will: What could he possibly want from us?
Mikhail: Good question. He keeps being very vague. I fear his screeching may break the delicate instruments here if he keeps jumping pitch.
Will: …..
[That gets Will to lighten up a little, hiding his smile behind his fingers.]
Will: Was he really screeching?
Soi: You have no idea.
Will: Heh.
Will: I see.
Mikhail: Do you mind if I use the printer?
Will: Oh, not at all, Mikhail.
Will: -Ahem-
[Will smile fades off after a moment, though, and he squares his shoulders back, his body facing away from the screen.]
Will: Unfortunately, I doubt Mr. Graham will give up so easily.
Soi: Oof…Yeah…
Soi: Um, I–
Will: Don’t bother, Soichiro.
Will: Allow me to handle him.
[Prinz… prinz… prinz…]
[Call once again patches the line though, but Will doesn’t even turn around.]
Graham: Bah, finally–
Graham: Sanda, If this call cuts off one more time, I’ll–
Will: No need.
Graham: –?
[Prinz… prinz… prinz…]
[Will’s voice is….]
[…Unusually pleasant, yet with a hard undertone to it. As if he was restraining something.]
Will: Good day, Mr. Graham.
Will: I’m ever so terribly sorry for all that. Right, Dr. Sanda?
Soi: –! Oh, yes! Sorry, it’s just been… so stressful as of late, some of our staff’s been, uh… moody.
[Mikhail has to smile a little at that from his position near the printer. He uses sign language to speak in Russian.]
Mikhail: “{‘Moody’ is certainly one way to put it. A TRUE bear could hardly be more ready to bite the man’s head off.}”
[It nearly takes all of the Doctors’ willpower to keep from snorting at that.]
[Prinz… prinz… prinz…]
Graham: Tch.
Graham: At least SOMEONE has some decent manners.
Will: (Ha. That is funny coming from you, you monster.)
Will: Again, I do ever so apologize.
Will: What seems to be the problem, Mr. Graham?
[Prinz… prinz… prinz…]
Graham: More like crisis.
Graham: It’s our factory.
Graham: It’s out of control!
Graham: It’s cranking out hostile, infected robots and we can’t STOP IT!
Will: …..
Soi: W-What?
Will: (And you didn’t mention that the very first thing.)
Will: (How strange.)
Will: Hmm.
Will: That doesn’t sound good.
Graham: You THINK?!
Mikhail: -Narrows his eyes- …
Will: If I recall, CherryDyn’s factory’s are all mostly automated, yes?
[Prinz… prinz… prinz…]
Will: If that’s the case, I’m afraid your own servers might be affected with the virus as well.
Graham: I KNOW that!
Graham: Our security measures have all failed! Every Xel-Robot in the building has gone insane, and to top it all off, they’ve blocked all the exits in the building!
Mikhail: -Snorts at this- “{Those measures were never very good to begin with, if what happened in April is anything to go by.}”
Will: ….
Soi: So… you’re trapped?
Graham: All of my staff and YES, myself as well!
Graham: Our HQ’s been locked down, but if you and the Mighty Numbers do not hurry–
Graham: Those infected robots will FLOOD the city, and the rest of the United States!
Will: …..
Mikhail: ({A bit late to cry wolf.})
Mikhail: -Russian- {Is there ANY other option? The children are asleep, they NEED rest.}
Soi: {Well…I…I don’t think so. CherryDyn’s robots are mostly flimsy compared to ours–No offense to you know who, of course–but a whole army—}
Will: Call.
Will: Confirm this.
Graham: Wha–!
Mikhail: -Pinches the bridge of his nose- {Gah… if only I weren’t in—…} …
Mikhail: (I can wake up the Rebel Angels, but not my own sons…)
Mikhail: (Once they hear about what I’m going through, they’ll go RIGHT into Defense mode…)
Graham: Are you even LISTENING–
[CALL] //: Confirming…
[PING!]
[CALL] //: Confirmed. Defective CherryDyn robots are rampaging throughout the city, coming from one local source based on local reports.
Will: (So you aren’t lying.)
Mikhail: —! {Wait—flimsy, right?}
[Prinz… prinz… prinz…]
Soi: {Yes–don’t get me wrong, some of them are a pain to deal with, but Beck got through them no problem!}
Soi: {In sheer numbers, however, they’ll cause enormous amounts of destruction…}
Mikhail: -Turns to face him- {More or less destruction than those using explosives to stop them?}
Soi: {I honestly do not know.}
Soi: {CherryDyn is the world’s–the WORLD’S, Mikhail, top robot manufacturer. If this is already in their servers, who knows how long before it spreads off the country?}
Mikhail: {Dammit.}
Mikhail: {Ugh… very well then…}
Mikhail: {You might consider calling the Second Generation.}
Soi: !
Graham: -Annoyed- What are you two nattering on about—
Mikhail: -Dryly- Business.
[Prinz… prinz… prinz…]
Will: …Mm.
Will: Well, this is a predicament…
Mikhail: Will—
Mikhail: {Jaden and Carlos together can truly handle themselves.}
Mikhail: {They’ll be awake by now. The only reason it hasn’t shown up is because I disconnected the servers.}
Mikhail: {This… this is the sort of thing they were made for, you know. To cause destruction. To channel that in a positive way…}
Mikhail: {It would really help the stress they’re going through right now.}
Mikhail: {Please at least consider? Your sons and daughters are so… tired…}
[The poor man looked exhausted himself.]
Will: …..
[Will doesn’t quite answer back, but he nods, as if to acknowledge it.]
Will: Mr. Graham.
Will: Do you not have any countermeasures yourself?
Graham: Did I NOT just say–
Will: It’s just a little odd to me.
Will: Surely, you know how tiring this has been on everyone.
Will: Did you not say yourself that you and your company would be doing EVERYTHING they can to help with the situation at large?
Graham: I–
Will: Yet…
Will: We seem to be doing all of the legwork, so to speak.
Will: Is there a reason for that?
Mikhail: {Excuse, you mean?}
[Prinz… prinz… prinz…]
Graham: How dare you—
Graham: We’ve been doing all we can to help CONTAIN the virus from spreading to our other servers!
Graham: We’re not just twiddling our thumbs here!
Will: I see.
Will: I suppose I should thank you, then.
Will: In any case…
Will: I suppose there is no choice. Lives are in danger.
Graham: Finally, you get it—
Will: However…
Will: I ask that you do not disturb us after this.
Will: My children are quite tired.
[Will’s hands ball up into fists.]
Will: And I will not have anyone asking for any more favors like this. For a long time.
Mikhail: {Good for you, Will!} -Clearly quite pleased-
Soi: Eheh…Er. Yes. We all need a…a break, eheh!
Graham: …..
[The CEO narrows his eyes at Will’s form for a moment.]
Graham: So you’re William Apollo White.
Will: Correct.
Will: And you’d do well to remember that name.
[Graham looks over at Mikhail again with derision.]
Graham: And him?
Will: He’s going to chew off your DAMN head off if you don’t MIND yourself!
Soi: –! Will…
Graham: (What the…)
Mikhail: -Grabs a file folder to put his notes in- A question, Graham, if you would.
Mikhail: The virus broke out over a week ago.
Mikhail: Why is this only now becoming a problem? Did something happen that changed things?
[He sounded genuinely curious.]
Will: That’s a rather good question.
Graham: (I can’t believe this–)
Graham: We’ve been TRYING to contain the virus all this time, like I have said.
Graham: At first, we stopped it from spreading to our factory branch–until now, that is.
Graham: We only had so many left in our Tech department after the virus struck.
Mikhail: (So it CAN be manually combated on Xel-based coded servers… that’s important information.)
Will: (Nggg….You don’t care, you don’t care–)
Soi: Ah– (Oh, man–)
Soi: E-Er, we’ll send help right away, Mr. Graham! Yes, we’ll do that, don’t you worry–
Soi: Right, Will–?
Will: …Yes, of course.
Will: …
Will: One more question, if you would.
Graham: -Exasperated- I do not have time to play 20 questions, White–
Will: What makes you so sure Dr. Blackwell is behind all this?
Mikhail: -Freezes- …
[He clutched the printed notes in his hand. His hands were shaking as he simmered in anger. He seemed… hurt.]
((Pic—Doctors & Greg))
Mikhail: (Will…)
[His expression became cold as he forced this anger inward, leaving his face as untelling as stone.]
Mikhail: (William…)
Mikhail: (Why!?)
Mikhail: (I told you, I…)
Mikhail: (I thought I TOLD you, twice—we talked about this, PLEASE, you—)
[His mind was drawn back into a deep memory…]
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
“You can end this, Doctor! Just surrender!”
[Mikhail looked down at the blue robot from his position in the Mecha. He spoke hotly, his voice thick with despair.]
Mikhail: That has never been an option, MegaMan! You are wasting your time!
[The combat robot fired.
The blast was powerful—the force from the blow was enough to unsteady him, and he lurched—]
((Pic—Mikhail captive (flashback) ))
[There was a harsh rattle noise from a chain that was shackled to his ankle and bolted to the floor of the construct.]
Mikhail: -Hisses- {Dammit!}
“I’m being serious! It doesn’t have to end in violence!”
Mikhail: {You… Rock, how dare you, you miserably sheltered boy…}
[He spoke in a private monologue, growling as he clawed his way back to the controls.]
Mikhail: {If there is even a slight chance for her to survive, I must END all that is you…!}
[He lashed out verbally and physically, crying out in emotional suffering.]
Mikhail: You, of ALL people, would say such a thing?! You killed your own brothers, Rock, when they only wanted your help! You could have avoided all of this if you just hadn’t killed his sons!
“What… what are you talking about?! What does that have to do—”
[The fight continued, more intensely.]
“You made your point, sir! The whole world now knows of your genius! Now just stop before you get yourself hurt!”
Mikhail: You cannot end this, boy! You don’t even have the slightest idea of what I fight for—you are not going to be able to turn me aside, for you have chosen to see it through this way to an end!
[Suddenly, PAIN.]
[His head hurt SO bad, he could feel glass shards embedded in his arms, the sick smell of burning electronics made him want to get ill—]
Mikhail: ({Get up… move, you forsaken bastard, Mikhail— get UP and FIGHT until your bioreadings are gone, you have to save her…})
[He staggered back to the console, ignoring the stinging pain all over his upper body.
The American combat construct seemed happy, confident that the fight was over.]
Mikhail: ({Idiot. You let your guard down.})
[His opponent was knocked back against the wall by the force of the attack, stunned ever so briefly.]
“Wha…”
[Mikhail brought the mecha down hard in an attempt to crush him, but it failed. And even worse—moving the damaged parts of the mecha was causing the electrical fire to spread. It was growing UNBEARABLY hot in the cockpit.]
“Doctor! What are you doing?!”
[No response but another attack—but his prey rolled aside and fired again, trying to immobilize him.]
“Are you insane?! A few more hits and your cockpit will be on fire! Surrender, already!”
Mikhail: YOU CANNOT TURN ME ASIDE! (I will get her back or DIE trying!)
“Doctor, /please/! What you’re doing is causing more trouble than you realize—”
[He interrupted via another attack. Mega was getting fed up and losing patience, however, and began to go at the motors.]
“There are too many lives at stake, Mikhail! Don’t make yours one of them!”
[The floor suddenly gave way, while at the same time, a massive force slammed him into the back of the cabin. The NOISE as the mecha crashed to the ground was deafening, and everything hurt so bad…!]
[Anything that wasn’t screaming in alarms at the damage readings was on fire, or broken.]
Mikhail: (N… nngh…!) -Coughing through haggard breaths- (I can’t…)
[…]
Mikhail: (…The weapons… they’re still… Online…)
Mikhail: …
[He screamed in pain as he thrust his hands through the fire, grabbing at the weapon controls and fired—!]
“Are you kidding me?!”
Mikhail: -Coughing more than breathing now- ({Damn it… the smoke is…!})
[A yelp of alarm.]
“Your cockpit is on fire! Get out of there!”
Mikhail: ({Not… not much time!})
[The cannon turned again, blasting and taking out a chunk of Mega’s shoulder.]
“P…please…”
[Fire… everything was fire…
He uses the last of the strength he has to hit the weapon controls again, but—
Overcome by the smoke, the heat, the dozens of open wounds, jagged from glass shards—
Everything went dark.]
-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
[Will didn’t seem to be faring so well either, and if he did notice, he certainly didn’t let it stop him. His emerald eyes flared with what could only be described as burning hatred.]
Will: You first claimed that he was the cause of all of this.
Will: And then you wasted no time claiming that Dr. Sanda and myself were his cohorts.
Will: Why.
Will: I want to know why you did that.
Will: Why you’re so keen on shifting the blame to everyone but y o u r s e l f.
Graham: You–! WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE?!
Graham: It’s OBVIOUS! That–that smelly old FART is out for REVENGE! Not only is the Blackwell name PROOF ENOUGH–
Graham: He’s outright INSANE, and nothing SHORT of a complete MONSTER! Now stop asking STUPID questions and SEND HELP!
[That was the last straw.]
Mikhail: (You…)
Mikhail: -Visibly grits his teeth-
Mikhail: (How DARE you.)
Mikhail: (You would MOCK that kind of SUFFERING!?)
Mikhail: (Will I can overlook, but YOU…)
Mikhail: (You MISERABLE bastard…)
Mikhail: (I wish I had let Tobias FRY your damn servers after slashing my way into them myself!)
[Mikhail abruptly put the call on mute from his location.]
Will: –!
Soi: (Oh no–)
Mikhail: Let me tell you something, Mr. Graham.
[He turned to face the terminal. The way he held his glasses against his face made him look incredibly sinister—a presence which was only amplified by his frightfully calm tone.]
Mikhail: When a genius suddenly loses it and makes the world burn, there is always something…
[He looked up.]
Mikhail: Or someONE…
Mikhail: … that pushed them there.
-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
Shadow: If Doctor Blackwell has been stripped of all rights and is out of public sight, with restricted access to his person, then that means that there are—forgive the cynicism—fewer people necessary to bribe, blackmail, or distract in order to get at Blackwell himself.
Shadow: When one is kept on a tight leash, be wary to be sure the leash stays in the hand of the right master.
Shadow: …If he IS involved, he may have been for—
Mikhail: {ENOUGH.}
Will: –!
Will: (Oh dear–)
[He was hugging his daughter tightly. She was silent and cowering, with her face turned away from the camera. She was shaking slightly.]
-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-
Will: …….
Mikhail: You are very fortunate that William is a man of incredible integrity with a hero for a son, or else you might have more than Doctor Blackwell to worry about.
Mikhail: (I only kept back from the temptation of RIPPING the dark veil he’s kept that hides the TOXIC corruption that the Angels and I know to be there…)
Mikhail: (…out of respect and protection of YOU, WILL!)
Mikhail: Assuming you aren’t lying— again.
Soi: O~O;;;;;
Soi: (Jeez, I…It’s like looking into a mirror…)
[Mikhail leaned forward, looking over his glasses in waaaaaaay too calm a manner.]
Mikhail: You will address the Doctor— ALL the Doctors, but ESPECIALLY William—
Mikhail: —in a POLITE manner from here on out…
Mikhail: …or you will discover how unpleasant a Russian can be to a rude American.
Mikhail: Good day.
[BLIP!]
Will: … .
Soi: ……
[Mikhail turned to face Will.]
Mikhail: It’s up to you whether you want to get middled in with his mess, and whatever trouble he wants us to drag him out of.
Will: …..
Will: Right.
Will: (Ngh...that was my fault, I...I needed to ask, but I didn't mean to push him over the edge like that...)
Will: (Mikhail, I...)
Will: (I just needed...to know...)
Will: ….
Will: Mikhail?
Mikhail: -Walking over to the door- I’m listening.
Will: …..
Will: I’m sorry.
Will: >>
Will: Please remind me to never get on your bad side again.
Soi: -… Quiet snort-
Mikhail: -Snorts-
Mikhail: I just can’t stand the topic Will, I’m not going to lie about that.
Mikhail: Blackwell is only a darker variation of me, the man I could have been.
Mikhail: -Places the file folder into a plastic tub near the door- I have never forgotten that. And I never will.
Mikhail: So. I’m leaving before I risk the temptation of doing something that will only make my situation even worse. =_______=
[He shuts the door loudly on his way out.]
