My only hope was to kneel, silent and docile, hoping they would tire of tormenting me. Who knows how many hours I spent like this, cowering and helpless, alone in the hot and muggy dark, afraid to move a finger for fear of the abuse coming back? Countless times did I pray for someone to save me from the stillness, the darkness which pressed in on me and suffocated me, and not once have my prayers been answered.
