Naturally, I knew the police were looking for me, so when I was walking down the street and saw the police car moving toward me, I put my head down and casually moved down an alley between shops. Once out of sight of the road, I ran down the alley, then ducked into an abandoned building, ran through it, then across a vacant lot, down some stairs to a culvert, through the culvert, then through an industrial area and hid in another abandoned building. I waited for the sun to go down, confident I had avoided capture.

Once it got dark outside, I came out of my hiding place, looked around, then moved down another alley and out the other side.

I halted.

“Now Ryan,” the female officer said to me, looking at me with the look of a disapproving mother, despite her youth. “You know I’m looking for you, and you know I have a warrant for your arrest. So why go to all that trouble to walk around, hide, and then wait, knowing I saw you and I’m going to catch you?”

My heart sank. Her tone was mockingly playful, but I also knew this officer from a previous arrest, and she would not tolerate nonsense. Leaning on her car so casually, I knew she was ready to pursue me if I ran. Instead, I sighed and my shoulders drooped.

“Very good boy,” she said. “I’m proud of you. Come on, let’s go.”

She stepped aside, and I put my hands on her car. The beautiful officer searched me, then pulled my hands behind my back, and I heard the click of the handcuffs, signaling to me I had just wasted my whole afternoon trying to avoid my own capture.

“You’re under arrest, honey,” she said, leading me to the rear door of the car. “Now, let’s get you comfortably tucked away in the car and off to jail where you belong, Ryan.”
