No other post has so accurately expressed my feelings on this matter. It's truly beyond me how anyone can hate Percy. It's literally Percy Jackson, the heart of the Riordanverse. I know everyone has their own favorites, and that's only natural, but it's literally HIS series. It's like driving out and disrespecting someone in their own house. You don't do it. You just don't.
And I could maybe understand it if the main character was terribly written or just an awful character, and it actually happens a lot with many series. But we, the PJO fandom, are extremely lucky to have one of the best main characters of all time. Percy is absolutely awesome and badass as a character; he is beyond powerful, but he is neither malicious nor self-absorbed. My man's been suffering since Book 1 without break and has literally been driven to his breaking point and subjected to every possible horror that exists, and he is still desperately excruciatingly doing his best to be good.
He has done everything a main character is expected to do, has gone above and beyond even in case of his personal relationships, has accepted every single responsibility both asked and not asked of him and fulfilled it. WHAT MORE DO YOU WANT?
There's not a single other main or side character (non antagonistic) that Percy has a bad relationship with. In fact, he has single handedly saved all of them at least once.
So no, you don't get to have your deluded anti takes on this one. All arguments are literally null and void. Percy is such a dynamic and inspiring character that antis have to invent some falsehoods to even take a shot at him.
I don't know what other fandoms do, but in this one, we stan our main character completely and passionately.
For the longest time I've pretty much thought that Percy Jackson and Hermes are both my fav characters? like their both tied first place. Can't choose between them.
But then I saw a Percy Jackson anti talk shit so much shit about him... and like. it wasn't even things that Percy did wrong. Part of it was just them going "yeah Percy did all that but I don't don't he deserved a reward. I don't think he's worth anything. I don't think he's smart - he's dumb and all his plans were dumb" and boy. let me tell you. I was M A D.
This is not how I wanted to figure out that I like Percy Jackson more than Hermes. Hermes hate makes me lowkey mad but Percy Jackson hate?
It's an entirely different year (less than a month tho) and I'm still steaming M A D.
Nothing pisses me off more in this fandom than 1. people insulting Percy's intelligence (a kid with two learning disabilities) or 2. not acknowledging how much blood, sweat, tears, insomnia, time, risk etc. Percy has put into his quests and fighting the war. And to have that so casually disregarded? *exhales* yeah as you can tell I'm still fucking pissed.
but anyways, long story short: Percy Jackson is now my undisputed all time fav fictional character :)
This might be a genuine Controversial opinion of mine. Really because I Always see The Black Percy fanart or POC Percy and I love them, even though i still love the book version...it had me thinking...
But I highly think that if Percy were Black or Any minority I Doubt he would Take Annabeth's Bs or let her treat him the way she does
What do you think?
I have mixed opinions on this. I think it's a bit controversial but not for the reasons you are going for. Bear with me.
I think all this diversity propaganda has warped our perspectives on characters and their roles. Rick is shit at diversity roles cause he is trying explicitly to write them as diversity characters. I mean yes coming from a certain race, culture or ethnic group does play a large part of who you are but most authors make that the entire point or personality of their character.
In a world like Percy Jackson, where far greater things are at stake, I don't think a character's race or ethnic group should be prioritized so much. In fact, their motivations, how they choose to cope with their trauma and insecurities, how they love, how they fight is what makes a character.
In contrast to Rick, Leigh Bardugo writes tons of diverse characters who are just that, characters in her eyes. It's not because she needs to meet some quota or write diversity for the sake of it. She writes as it comes to her, and I think anyone would appreciate that far more.
Now, coming to your point, I don't think Percy being a minority or person of color would have changed him much. Because the points that you are trying to make should already be valid for Percy as he is.
He had an abusive stepfather who not only physically and mentally abused him but also always harassed him for money. Percy has grown up in that environment, he knows abuse well.
Percy can't stand bullies or people who impose their will, which is a fundamental part of his character which we are actually introduced to very. early on
Not to mention, Percy grew up in the streets of NYC all on his own, also moving from one boarding school to another. He is seasoned player when it comes to cops or law enforcement.
Plus I headcanon that all demigods have issues with any kind of normal organization or law enforcement cause what explanation are they supposed to give for their actions when the person across from them can't fathom it, see it or let alone imagine it. So they are all kind of in similar situations despite whatever culture or ethnic group they are from.
Percy's actions are also a reflection of his self-esteem. That's the thing driving his behavior. Percy wouldn't stand for this from a stranger, but Annabeth is his best friend. The first person he got close to in Camp. She represents his demigod life in a way. To him, the fact that someone like her wants to date him seems unbelievable. He goes in that relationship or any relationship feeling inferior. Then he begins dating her, and he desperately wants to meet her expectations cause Percy Jackson can't take her walking out on him, not because he disappointed her. Cause what sort of shit boyfriend is he if he can't even stand and accept Annabeth as she is. So he takes it as it is. He takes her demands, her violent way of expressing her emotions and her need to be in control. She wants to go to University and study, she wants to be involved in the demigod business, wants to be the heart of it and Percy isn't about to leave her to be on her own. He is Percy, he would go to the ends of earth and beyond for people he loves and cares for. So he goes along with that too.
The question shouldn't be what it would take Percy to be done with Annabeth's bullshit or what would finally make him snap. That shouldn't be the focus.
The focus should be at what point will Annabeth realize that she is stifling Percy, leashing him. (Before you snap, percabeth stans hear me out, not my words. Literally a bloody conversation from Mark of Athena, in which Piper word to word says and agrees with Annabeth that someone needs to leash him and Annabeth can do it.)
And I love how the fandom just glossed over it. What the hell??? Are you people blind? How is that a healthy relationship??
Annabeth should realize how badly she is hurting Percy or how badly she has misunderstood him. How awful her actions have been and how her actions are enabling his lack of self esteem. (For confused people who think Annabeth can do no wrong, please check other posts. There's nothing wrong with admitting that your favorite character is flawed and can make mistakes. )
And then if she truly loves him they should separate, go their ways, still be friends but not romantic partners. Or they should go on a long break in which Annabeth needs to sort out her behavioral issues, come back to Percy, apologize to him earnestly, then to Rachel and even Reyna. And then if Percy (after he too understands the problems in their relationship and how disastrous his lack of self esteem and self deprecation is) is willing to give her a chance or even willing to be in any romantic relationship then and only then should they get back together.
It might not be the answer you were hoping for anon but I had to give my honest thoughts on this. Feel free to comment your own opinions on this as well.
At this point after reading 10+ books about Percy if they still came to that conclusion despite having the context of the whole thing then they are just trying to pick faults, desperate to find something bad and negative about Percy but jokes on them there's not a single thing to find . The only thing wrong with Percy is his abysmally low self-esteem, and that's literally anybody fault but his.
This is like when someone gets an upper hand in a life for death situation, and their mind due to being high on adrenaline and emotions gives a perfectly natural sort of a hysterical response to the situation and everyone else going "Stop that, it's scaring me. You should have just died instead of doing that."
Say it with me. Percy choked Akhlys out of anger. Not sadism or enjoyment.
You know, love is a tricky thing. It's like walking blindfolded through a maze, never quite sure if you'll stumble upon the exit or fall into a pit. You can pour your heart and soul into loving someone, give them everything you've got, but you can never be sure if they'll love you back the same way.
It's like, you're standing there, baring your soul, hoping they'll see the love in your eyes and feel it in every beat of your heart. But you can never really look into their heart, can you? You can never know for sure if they're feeling the same way, if they're holding onto you as tightly as you're holding onto them.
And that uncertainty, man, it's like a constant shadow looming over you. You question every smile, every touch, wondering if it's genuine or just a facade. You want to believe they love you as much as you love them, but deep down, there's always that nagging doubt.
So you learn to live with it, I guess. You learn to cherish the moments when they make you feel loved and pray that they're real. You learn to trust, even when every fiber of your being screams at you to run away.
Because at the end of the day, love is a leap of faith. It's about taking a chance, knowing full well that you might crash and burn, but hoping against hope that you'll soar instead. And maybe, just maybe, that's what makes it worth it in the end.
The same rules as the last poll apply. This has nothing to do with sexual intimacy or no. of romantic scenes. Which couples worked best together and had a natural understanding of one another.
For a very long time I have been extremely respectful to Percabeth shippers and made no comments on Annabeth out of respect but overall I have had terrible experiences with Percabeth shippers so at this point I have no patience for their brand of bullshit. It's such a toxic bunch(not all but most), that nothing but blunt criticism will get through to their skewed heads.
Question. do you think Percy should have stayed Single? Or ended up with somebody other than Annabeth? I Really think he should have stayed Single. Because I personally don't Like Percabeth, I don't Ship Percabeth and I don't Like Annabeth at all because of the way the Shippers act, or The way the characters themselves in Canon Act, like how Percy just does whatever Annabeth says, or how Percy is scared of Annabeth, Or how fans make it seem like Percy would become an Emo Edge Lord if something happened to Annabeth, Or How much she Belittles and Degrades him (I hate the nickname Seaweed brain), Especially since she acts like Percy cant do anything without her That moment when She and Reyna were talking about how ("Percy Couldn't find his way out of a Paper Bag without you")Made me SO mad it made me Dislike Annabeth even more and Dislike the Percabeth Ship as a Whole, I even hated when she Pretty much Restricted percy of using his powers You Know? "The sea doesn't like to be Restrained" well here it is.. being restrained...Exactly what it hates, and I hate how the Fandom makes Percabeth a Godly Ship saying they are the "It Couple" which they aren't and how They treat anyone who doesn't like Percabeth or Ships Percy with someone else other then Annabeth, but the one thing I HATE the most is how they make EVERYTHING percy Does Romantic for Annabeth like she's the only person who matters to him (Percy Only Remembering Annabeth (a Girl he's Known for only a couple years) Instead of The woman Who RAISED him by a goddess who isn't even the goddess of Love Made me SO MAD and Even when Annabeth made Percy remember when he was in the River Styx when it should have been his Mom made me mad) which is why I mostly believe that Percy Should have just stayed Single (I'm all for an Aromantic Percy) or At least Give him a Love interest who he can be Comfortable around and doesn't have to Constantly walk on Eggshells around her (I wished he Dated Rachel) or Hell Even make him Gay i've saw characters who have Better chemistry with Percy then Annabeth IMO but this all just my opinion.
You honestly don't know how long I could rant on this exact subject.
It's partly Annabeth's fault, and it's partly Rick's fault.
Anyone and everyone who has read the Pjo and HoO series should have noticed how illogical Percy's personality change was.
Percy Jackson, the hero of Olympus and the strongest demigod to ever live, sassy as can be, laid back but scary beyond measure if you cross him and an absolute menace to his enemies and loyal to death.
That's who he is, and Rick remembered that initially, and even till Son of Neptune then he just forgot how Percy someone he himself wrote to be this way is.
It's like Percy has no identity of his own, and he is only significant if he is with Annabeth. Like hello, he's the main character people, is the Fandom seriously going to degrade the main character, especially when the said mc is Percy Jackson???
Percy, despite his own issues, is and will always be foremost in helping people. He would be the first person to help keep the seven together. He would be the first to try and make a bond. He wouldn't have some stupid and illogical and totally ooc beef with Jason. Instead, he would help Jason be more sure of himself to stand up to Jupiter and for himself.
He would help Leo personally to bring back Calypso and they would both shit talk Olympians and how fickle their oaths are.
He would literally do anything to save Nico. Like hello, are you telling me that the boy who at 14 took it upon himself to bear the Great Prophecy, which he thought who end up killing him just to save Nico from that fate????? He would go absolutely madly feral to save Nico from the Giants.
If Piper and Reyna had their screws all properly fit they would see that Annabeth and literally everyone else would be all left to die if it wasn't for Percy. Percy gets himself out of everything by his own efforts and his own strategies. (Annabeth's rarely work). It's time the Fandom acknowledges that the best strategist in the verse is Percy, no questions asked and finally give him due credit for all HIS efforts.
Percy would never ever leave Sally unless it was for a quest, especially not when she was pregnant and absolutely not to go to college, something he hates especially when it concerns New Rome.
Here's a thing about Percabeth shippers they care about Annabeth's plans and her dreams, not Percy's. It is literally so out of character for Percy to want to live in New Rome a place that invests in a child army, a place that despises his father and wouldn't even build him a decent temple, a place so extremely cut off from the sea.
If Percy wanted to live in peace and grow old, he would do it in a place of his choosing close to his mother, Paul and Estelle, and close to the sea. But here's the thing about Percy.
I don't think people get this, but Percy can't just up and leave, nor would he want to. His damned fatal flaw is LOYALTY. He would never ever leave demigods or anyone helpless by leaving Camp Half Blood. Sure he would take less quests on but he would ALWAYS stick around and Rick did him so dirty by making all his thoughts revolve around Annabeth and insinuating he would let others suffer just fine to be with Annabeth.
Percy gave up immortality because he took Sally's teaching to heart as she did so too when she denied Poseidon's offer. He did it for himself for demigods it didn't have shit to do with Annabeth, but of course, he would look at her because she represents his life as a demigod.
Rick making Percy see Annabeth near the Styx and making him remember Annabeth instead of Sally is just him bullshitting. We all know Percy is a mama's boy, and he would do right by Sally always, so him giving a girl who he has known for barely long enough has no basis to it.
And Percabeth stans literally can't take a mention of a single alternate Percy pairing that alone is the biggest red flag. Because they know their ship is toxic and that Annabeth is the root of it.
For the PEOPLE IN THE BACK aka toxic stans:
Annabeth's fatal flaw is HUBRIS, and she is by nature controlling and condescending, and her character had the chance to GROW and CHANGE, and it would have been the most epic character growth sequel but she did not and she is CONTROLLING, DISMISSIVE , DEMEANING.
The newest Read Riordan entry literally has Annabeth saying that she needs to catch up to Percy cause he scores a better grade than her in school (even there Percy is smarter folks there you have it) and she literally says if she doesn't catch up Percy might start calling her SEAWEED BRAIN. So it is a demeaning nickname she gives Percy and continues calling him that even after knowing how Gabe similarly verbally abused Percy.
This is the fandom's IT couple? Wow. Percy literally is going against his own nature of being free and unrestrained like the sea because of Annabeth's controlling nature.
The worst of her behavior is when she blames Percy for his disappearance when she dismissed him when he was talking about his trauma induced by Gabe, her beyond toxic treatment of Rachel, especially when she unreasonably asked Percy to supress the use of the very power that got them out alive (she is scared naturally but she cannot force her own fear on Percy when he did nothing wrong).
So yeah, Percy Jackson with anyone but Annabeth. I am all for aromantic Percy, but personally, I find Perachel to be more appealing.
Trust me, I could rant about this for hours, especially how Rick butchered Percy's personality and made it full of Annabeth, especially how he threw Percy's insecurities and trauma and PTSD out of the gutter post tartarus.
this website’s easy watch. *dangles a bunch of greek gods like keys*
This is gonna be an Anti-Percabeth/Annabeth rant so don't come at me if you continue reading.
Can't read HOO without Percabeth being shoved down my throat (at the point in life, I forgot everything in the books, hence why I need to reread them before starting CotG), like ffs, best Percy characterization in the series is SoN and it was TTC in PJO. Guess what they both have in common? Little to no Annabeth.
Honestly, maybe I should just shelf this entire series and give up? I don't understand why I saw Percabeth as the golden standard when I was younger? Have I really changed that much to the point that I hate Annabeth now when I used to like her? Like??? Who can stand this bitch irl? She's fictional and I roll my eyes whenever I see her name written on the page.
Don't even get me started on the Percabeth fandom. I'm reading a feel-good fic with Solangelo (because tsats does not exist for me, thanks) and these people just ask why there's no Percabeth??? This is a Solangelo fic??????
Supported/bought a zine and there's barely any art that has Percy in it with no Percabeth. Thought this was Percy Jackson and the Olympians? Does Percy have no character except for the fact that he's Annabeth's boyfriend? God, fucking hate this ship now, hate their fandom with how insistent some people are to smash our face with it too
THIS fucking close to just writing a character review on why I dislike Percabeth with my entire being and I am petty enough to do it in APA format. Just out of pure fucking spite.
percy: hold on, i’m having one of those things - a headache with pictures
grover: huh?
annabeth: he’s having an idea
Louder, for willfully blind people in the back and, of course, the amnesiac Rick Riordan himself.
you know what? enough with the "Percy is just another dude" trend. He does not look like another dude. Hazel, a powerful big three kid saw him once and thought he was a god.
Percy was offered immortality 3 times before his 18th birthday. The Olympians, who chronically cannot agree on anything unanimously decided to grate Percy godhood. not immortality. godhood. Poseidon, who has literally tens of thousands of children decided that Percy was his favorite. As soon as Percy discovered he was a demigod he started kicking godly ass and never stopped, even in fucking Tartarus.
I need people to start realizing this. immediately. enough with the "he's just a plain dude." no. No. NO. from the get go they see that Percy completely out of their league. camp jupitar saw this and promoted him to praetor in the space of a WEEK. they merely glimpsed the potential and they tried to hang on to him.
Percy's profs at NRU recognize his intelligence (4 languages under his belt before 18 without consistent learning disability accommodations), and offer him a specialized program and he becomes one of the youngest demigods/leggionnares to earn a masters/PhD. In a shockingly short amount of time. they test his IQ and he's a veritable genius.
He joins the basketball varsity team and redos all their strategy plays and his teammates realize that yeah. this is the guy that camp up with the strategy to take down typhon. this is the guy that led the defense against Kronos. they can believe it. after one rousing speech by Percy he has them all ready to fist fight Jupiter himself. they fucking smash every single other college team off the board; it's like nothing anyone's ever seen before. every single one of them get multiple professional offers to join national/international teams.
his classmates occasionally see him hanging around new rome with people they don't recognize. except praetor Reyna does and she fucking gasps and kneels and it turns out his friends he like to hang out with casually? fucking Olympian gods. Hermes. Mercury. Apollo(n). Poseidon. Neptune. Artemis. Diana. they visit on his schedule. they do shit for him. because he's the one that saved their asses. and they fucking know it.
just. enough with the "he's just a normal guy, Percy Jackson." no. No. NO. the man is single handedly responsible for the fact that Olympus still stands and western civilization still exists. He is light years out of everyone's leagues.
Respect Percy Jackson.
Random question that popped in my head.
what if The Percy Jackson universe was Real??? Like I mean the characters, the Gods, The monsters, Everything. And do you think that Percabeth would last if they were a Real Life Couple?? Would any of the relationships last if they were Real??? Would Percy and Annabeth even like each other if they were real people??? Im genuinely curious
I think Percy and Annabeth as two people are realistically very incompatible.
1. Annabeth literally projects her mother's Poseidon hate on Percy for no absolute reason in the first book, and let's just say her behavior is nothing short of absolutely unpleasant towards Percy.
When they finally do bond, it's never because of something they have in common but because they have gone through the same set of circumstances.
2. Their whole entire relationship is completely based on trauma bonding. Their relationship is entirely based on being each other's only company through dangerous experiences.
3. Percy due to his deep self esteem issues sees Annabeth as the only person who will love him despite all his flaws and thus has this blatant misconception that no one except for Annabeth will ever love him which is a complete and utterly horrible misunderstanding and an absolute lie.
But he is so terrified of losing the one person he thinks loves him for himself that he doesn't even try to entertain other relationships even if it's to get an idea about how relationships work.
And when he finally does with Rachel, he finds himself much more relaxed, happy going, and content with her than Annabeth, and despite all that realization, Uncle Rick chose to shove Percabeth down readers' throats.
4. The purely toxic way in which Annabeth assumes some sort of ownership over Percy is truly repulsive.
And don't get me started upon how awfully toxic her response to Rachel's mere presence was both to Rachel and to Percy despite them not even dating yet or at all.
5. Not to mention Percy is a character who has extreme issues with self-esteem and yet Annabeth insists on calling him a nickname that at its core means dumb and Percy is no way dumb at all maybe oblivious but not dumb.
Percy is shown repeatedly on edge around Annabeth, and due to her controlling nature but he, in his own words, chalks it up to healthy fear. (There's no such thing as a healthy fear when it comes to your significant other)
No healthy relationship should, never I mean, never ever contain even a hint of fear. NEVER.
6. Annabeth is and has always been openly insensitive or disregarding of Percy's trauma with Gabe and even when he tries to talk about it she shuts him up by laughing at him, laughing at an ABUSE victim trying to open up.
All in all Percabeth shippers may preach what they want but Percabeth is a very toxic relationship. Because it doesn't matter how many other good moments there were it matters that there were this downright horrible moments.
7. And think on this logically. Percy and Annabeth have literally nothing in common. NOTHING. No hobbies, not aspirations in life, not their perspectives on life literally nil.
So if you are telling me two people like that are going to end up having a long, fulfilling relationship, then yeah, no, you are only fooling yourself.
In real life with actual dating they wouldn't even last six months, even that's too long.
