Imogen's immense capacity for empathy for things wriggly and "wrong" and lonely, things grotesque on the outside with a pure sort of want a sincerity, a truth on the inside.
Ashton, feeling fundamentally broken, fighting for good, for a purpose, telling her she has quite a crew of broken things following her. Saying there's a reason for that. Himself and Laudna.
(Ashton counting themself and Laudna as kindred spirits, Ashton looking at Imogen and seeing some reflection of what Laudna sees.)
(Imogen saying - Ashton is good. That they're special. Imogen who does lethal things when it needs it, who has almost taken a level of satisfaction in Ashton's approving assessments of her lethality, her decisionmaking.)
Imogen says she likes the All Minds Burn, she actually does, Ashton agreeing, thanking her for backing them. Imogen and things cast away, things found as horrifying, and an almost inexplicable empathy. Ashton and things to fight for, things to throw their lot behind until the light in their skull goes out.
Its like, both so sudden and also- no i kind of get it. I get it. They're complimenting each other very intensely, openly, they're both laughing with a weird seed of a telepathic brain between both of them, walked into a den of danger and back out again and like. No. I get it.
Took Alexandria Neonakis' Schoolism class on costuming, and the main assignment was to design the costume for a character in a book, movie, etc. Her example was Tom Bombadil and Goldberry, so I designed Mina Harker from the book Dracula! I tried to make her outfits as close to 1880/1890's designs as I could. Her clothes are of an older style, as she was a school teacher and Jonathan had only just been certified, so in my mind they didn't have a lot of money, and then...Dracula happened.
Very informative class, would recommend!
Iām so fucked up about simon. His character arc in the main series was set up that ice king becoming a simon again was inevitable. It wasnāt a matter of if, but when and how.
but now that itās happened, itās the worst thing that couldāve happened to him.
he had friends! a special secret club of wizards he had matching rings and would go on roadtrips with! he wasnāt even really a problem anymore!
bettyās character is so fantastic. she traveled through time for him. She went insane for him. She become a god for him. But him being Simon was easier for her. Did she ever truly consider if it was what he wanted? Sheās not even there with him. Sheās not there and now heās Simon and heās more isolated than ever.
He lives with humans! At this point, Finn has known him longer as Simon than he knew him as Ice King. Ice King is just an old memory now. But Simon is over a thousand years old. āSimon Petrikovā is just an old memory too. Heās human again, but not really.
Whatās worse is how smart he is. Heās an intelligent and emotionally competent man. So he really, truly, profoundly knows how deeply fucked up his life is. Heās so aware of it.
wouldnāt it be easier? If he was stupid and naive and magical? does he miss magic? maybe not ice, but magic itself? would he try to learn? Does he remember the password to Wizard City? Would they even still let him in? thereās a school. He could learn magic again. but would he? Doesnāt Simon Petrikov like learning about magic?
Everything Stays. Heās still here. But heās different now. Everything is different now except itās not because the world stayed the same and heās the one who changed. He canāt go back. Except he did, in a way, and it wasnāt even his choice.

The ongoing "Jason Todd is a cop" debate has reminded me of a brilliant brief image essay by Joey deVilla. So here it is, images first and the full essay text below:
"A common leftist critique of superhero comics is that they are inherently anti-collectivist, being about small groups of individuals who hold all the power, and the wisdom to wield that power. I donāt disagree with this reading. I donāt think itās inaccurate. Superheroes are their own ruling class, the concept of the übermensch writ large. But itās a sterile reading. It examines superhero comics as a cold text, and ignores something that I believe in fundamental, especially to superhero storytelling: the way people engage with text. Not what it says, but how it is read. The average comic reader doesnāt fantasize about being a civilian in a world of superheroes, they fantasize about being a superhero. One could charitably chalk this up to a lust for power, except for one fact⦠The fantasy is almost always the act of helping people. Helping the vulnerable, with no reward promised in return. Being a century into the genre, weāve seen countless subversions and deconstructions of the story. But at its core, the superhero myth is about using the gifts youāve been given to enrich the people around you, never asking for payment, never advancing an ulterior motive. We should (and do) spend time nitpicking these fantasies, examining their unintended consequences, their hypocrisies. But itās worth acknowledging that the most eduring childhood fantasy of the last hundred years hasnāt been to become rich. Superheroes come from every class (donāt let the MCU fool you). The most enduring fantasy is to become powerful enough to take the weak under your own wing. To give, without needing to take. So yes, the superhero myth, as a text, isnāt collectivist. But thatās not why we keep coming back to it. Thatās not why children read it. We keep coming back to it to learn one simple lesson⦠The best thing we can do with power IS GIVE IT AWAY." - Joey deVilla, 2021 https://www.joeydevilla.com/2021/07/04/happy-independence-day-superhero-style/
