i think we make non-death eater pure bloods too “nice”
andromeda can love ted and not be prejudiced against him for being muggleborn, but still have some anti-muggle/squib biases. i firmly believe shes still a black through and through. she can be progressive and still carry the pride she was raised with. personally, my adromeda thinks she better than everybody, and sees a “proper” way to life. eg wanting tonks to keep her hair natural colours and her face human and use the right fork for salad godammit! she can accept her werewolf son in law but also be a difficult mother!
same goes for sirius. its canon he thinks hes better than everybody and can get away with anything. he bullied/pranked kids at hogwarts not because he was blood purist, but because he was the popular guy.
even the blood purist blacks. i think they refused to join volemort because he was some low-born wannabe sacred 28 (half blood secretly). theyre old money. theyre not on the streets killing muggleborn wizards, theyre removing squibs from the family tree and moving laws so pure bloods have more sway. they dont rally against muggles because they see them as ants.
even james’ parents. they werent blood purists, but that doesnt mean they were perfect parents. james in hogwarts was very mich the product of two eldery parents who treat their little miracle like he owns the world. i know theyd get brought into the principal’s office in kindergarten because james threw sand at a bunch of girls and pulled their hair (cuz they didnt pay attention to him) and they were like “ummm no that doesnt sound like james, our baby wouldnt do that” and then theyd get hik ice cream after
one thing i love about tlt is that almost every character (save coronabeth) is described at some point in some way or another as ugly
theyre all just scraggly, wet rats. awkward, and sharp, and lanky and offputting
theyre human.
and it makes them all so beautiful
a breath of fresh air
Please read the whole thing through. I am saying this specifically for audiences that forget what Death Eaters stood for.
Their ideology was centred on:
⁃ Pureblood supremacy
⁃ Genocide of non-wizards
⁃ Genocide of muggleborns
⁃ Torture and murder of “blood-traitors”
⁃ Government infiltration and dictatorship
I really don’t understand how fans (so many of whom hate JKR, are Palestine activists and are watching the USA fall under a fascist regime) aren’t connecting the dots.
People seem keen to forget that the Death Eaters and their supporters were canonically privileged aristocrats (the Malfoys, Regulus Black and his parents, Barty Crouch Jr, the Lestranges and likely many more but these are the only ones I could find EXPLICIT mentions of being from privileged backgrounds) who thought of themselves as superior for unproven reasons that were canonically false.
This is why so much of the fandom hates it when people create tragic backstories for blood supremacists, think up inclusive headcannons for them or ship them with resistance fighters.
People may as well be making headcannons about Hitler, Donald Trump or Elon Musk.
There are exactly two dark characters that we know the backstories of pre-dark alignment: Severus Snape and Tom Riddle.
(Not mentioning Regulus and Peter because there’s no in-depth information on them in cannon. Draco was aligned towards the dark since the beginning so I’m not mentioning him either.)
These two ACTUALLY have troubled pasts! Severus Snape comes from abject poverty and Tom Riddle was orphaned and grew up in an place where he was disliked as a young child.
This doesn’t excuse the stuff they did, but it seems strange the fandom (Marauders Era fandom especially) creates fannon backstories for fascists they like while ignoring the cannon ones for fascists they dislike.
It is a fact of history that any up-and-coming fascist movement starts from the top down. Only the elite can pass oppressive laws and hide their misdeeds behind money. Then they employ the people below them.
(To anyone about to argue that this contradicts what I said about Tom Riddle not being privileged; we have canon information that tells us that muggleborns and muggles were already viewed as “lesser” far before his time. Tom just used his charm and intelligence to organise the fascists into a group which made it easier to commit genocide.)
The fandom want to headcannon every character as lgbtqia+, autistic, poc, disabled and whatever else.
I really need you guys to have a reality check: there is no racist organisation that draws the line at racism. None. They will always find another target.
Now, does this mean your interpretation of the characters shouldn’t be diverse? FUCK NO!!! I am literally begging you all to continue making the characters POC and queer and whatever else you want! HOWEVER, Please think of what it means to be a Death Eater and consider what it may say about you to be fixated on a fascist’s race, romance and friendships when there are SO MANY other non-Death Eater characters who would be better suited for your headcannons.
Hermione Granger (muggleborn who fought for house-elf rights and in the war against the people trying to kill her kind) would absolutely have a dictionary on pronouns memorised, start eight different heritage clubs and hex any racist she came across.
Remus Lupin (werewolf who has lived a life of discrimination due to his condition) 100% could be a disability ally! He knows firsthand how unseen mental and physical disabilities weigh you down and impact how people view you.
Luna Lovegood (bullied for being strange) take one look at her character and you will understand that this girl would be using (and probably creating) neopronouns and being the one all of the bullied people flock to for comfort.
You could take anyone who fought in the rebellion or their allys (just skim the wiki, there are lots of interesting characters) or even create an original character if none of them suit your fancy.
I personally feel quite offended by the way much of the fandom treats Death Eaters.
I remember kids drawing swastikas on the school windowsill while having pride pins on their bags.
They thought it was funny.
I remember learning about the pink triangles. I remember being called a gypsy for having old ill-fitting clothes and tan skin. I remember reading Anne Frank. I remember not being able to dance with a girl at prom.
I remember reading Harry Potter: a story about how kids stood up against a fascist takeover.
Now more than ever we need to be remembering these things.
I'm a Marauders era fan. MY take on what it should be
Sirius Black- is the tallest (Well over 6 foot), maybe one or two tattoos, black hair above his shoulders, doesn't simp over Remus and can easily do anything without him, one of the smartest in the school, hell of a dark humor, dark looks, VERY popular, has many flaws, but is still the best, prefers James over anyone, one of the hottest in the school, reckless
James Potter- not as tall as over 6 foot, like 5,10 or 5,11 (Like Harry), one of the smartest in the school, popular, not constantly asking Lily out or assaulting her
Remus Lupin- quiet, coward, tries to keep to himself, good at quidditch, but doesn't play, isn't the school's Casanova, not the hottest guy, a bit below average or such, not over 6 foot, not the smartest in the school (Like average or just above), doesn't swear like a sailor, doesn't have anger issues, isn't an asshole, not a tattoo type of guy
Peter Pettigrew- most likely more popular than Remus, is included, not hated by his friends, not a bitch to his friends, doesn't act like his adult self
Lily Evans- isn't Hermione 2.0, she does swear occasionally, is able to beat someone's ass, rightfully hates Snape and the other Slytherins or blood supremacists, strong, smart (Not as much as James and Sirius though
Regulus Black- not a twink, isn't a crybaby who constantly cries about Sirius (They probably threaten each other and use death threats until Pandora and James are like 'Oi, wtf'), tall, not as much as Sirius, but probably James' height and maybe taller
Walburga Black- doesn't use unforgivable curses on her kids, doesn't physically abuse them. I hope you guys know that emotion abuse exists. DOES spoil her kids, puts expectations on them, but does praise them about being the Black heir, she's the reason they're so bloody hot
The others aren't so bad (But they still have bad characterization)
The Slytherins are not softies. It was the 70's, LGBT wasn't s respected, though there could be a few gay kisses and other stuff. They don't have so many tattoos that it covers their whole body, there's nothing wrong with that, it's just that there's pure bloods and they're still in Hogwarts. Sirius is TALL. He has dark humor, is capable of doing stuff himself, did NOT regret the prank.
The Prank- Sirius openly said (And to Remus) that Snape got what was coming to him for the prank, I bet there wasn't a whole angst thing where they ignored Sirius. James would NEVER do that. Remus was a coward; he probably forgave Sirius very easily (Though he couldn't trust him), they probably laughed about it in the dorms.
Wolfstar- It's one of the biggest ships. I don't ship it or see the appeal. Though I'm not going to hate or tell anyone to stop, but there's so much evidence that Remus and Sirius were toxic to each other (I'm going to say it all in a different post). Sirius and Remus can live without each other perfectly fine. It was James that Sirius couldn't live without. Though you guys can ship whatever you want (But please no pro-ships), but also. ATYD is NOT canon. The writing is brilliant, it must've taken a god long time, it's great. BUT. The characterization is completely off, the girls are barely there, even Snape is wrong (Still hate his guts though).
Also, I know SOME fans are going to come to my house with pitch forks. THOSE FANS, you can come and suck my nonexistent DIC- (I'm a woman). ALSO, I'm not homophobic for saying stuff about gay not being as active in the marauder's era, there were probably SOME, but I'm lesbian, so I can't be homophobic. And to THOSE fans, I know it's not real, but I don't have a life, and I like being a part of the marauder's era, but it's the characterization
Also, everyone says "Canon? What's canon", but the only reason the marauders era exists is because of canon. It's like me making Sirius a blonde, and I go "Canon? Never heard of her"
can i spread the agenda that lily/remus friendship wasnt in the books but lilypad writing letters to each other and lily trusting sirius with being a godparent and their secret keeper and sirius saying hed die for lily was
anyway LILYPAD HOGWARTS BESTFRIENDSHIP
jily got tgt because jilypad so close bonding over their sibling issues and lily warmed up to the marauders
platonic lilypad BUT lily is kind of drunk in the middle of a gryffindor house party so ofc sirius is there for her<333
don’t cut off the hardest line: “or hide in the closet”!!
james talking to sirius, and loving him unconditionally. prongsfoot for the winners. i love my babies so much. it actually HURTS.
i interact with fanfiction the way i played with toy cars when i was a kid
i made them all drive on the right side of the road, stop at stop signs, and obey speed limits
i like to keep things mostly canon complaint, its fun for me to stretch the boundries of canon here okay, its like an exercise in creativity
if i wanted to make ocs i would do that. let me play with dolls
nvm so I did finish the second half lmao
they pining 🙄🤢
btw can James wear lipstick more pls.. he's so...
if I get a content label for this completely non explicit art, I'm suing Tumblr
sirius would fall first for james - the second he sees his bright sunshine smile with a big front tooth gap he’d be smitten blushing red and getting hearts in his eyes
james would realise he has a crush on sirius the first time sirius opens up about how cruel his mother is and how worried he is about leaving reggie at home alone all year like that - he’d hold onto sirius and want to protect him with every fibre in his body
they’re both first years, eleven and twelve when they get their crushes.
they’re both third years, awkward teenagers with voices that crack and an abnormal amount of body hair they freak out about together, when they realise they’re in love with the other.
it’s not till they’re twenty one, and sirius is cradling james’ lifeless body that he tells him he’s the only person sirius has ever loved
it’s not till sirius is thirty three and looking across the dark street at a boy with james’ face and a trunk beside him, waiting for the knight bus, that sirius lets himself weep for the first time since that night, about the man he lost twelve years ago
the best genre of media is lesbians who cannibalize each other
no one asked me to explain this but i want to
plato has a quote “opinion is the medium between knowledge and ignorance”
in the pilot episode, misty receives a prank call from some girls accusing her of doing anal, to which she responds quoting plato. or rather, misquoting plato
she says “opinion is the WILDERNESS between knowledge and ignorance”
i see this as intentional on the writers part since the word “wilderness” holds a lot of weight in the yellowjackets universe. the girls use “wilderness” to refer to the force/deity they encounter in the wild and blame for all the sinister things that take place/that they do
many people theorize whether or not the “wilderness” is supernatural or if it is a figment of the girls imagination that they use to cope with what happened in the canadian rockies
i argue that the show will never reveal the answer. the question itself is the main theme of the show, and the writers toy with us using plausible deniability with any supernatural event (lottie’s schizophrenia, tai’s genetic mental health issue (??), etc.)
i believe this because of the aforementioned misty line; the writers told us plainly that this “wilderness” the girls believe in is a result of the blind spot between ignorance and knowledge about what is really going on
we will never know if the “wilderness” is real or not, because the only thing that is real is that the yellowjackets did what they had to do to survive and now they have to live with it
i want to give the Yellowjackets writers kudos for dropping the line “opinion is the wilderness between knowledge and ignorance” in the pilot episode
and i want to send my condolences that it has gone so far unnoticed
phenomenal theme foreshadowing
