The chair is a supreme discipline among designers as it has to combine comfort and appeal quite naturally. Throughout his entire career the Danish designer Hans J. Wegner (1914-2007) worked on all kinds of chairs and furniture but was never fully satisfied with the status quo, a circumstance that resulted in some 500 individual designs. As a trained carpenter Wegner approached chairs in a very hands-on manner that entailed model making, careful fine-tuning, great attention to details and sophisticated material handling. Wegner designs like the Wishbone Chair, the Chinese Chair or the Round Chair combine function and the efficient use of material with a pinch of expressiveness that give the designs a character beyond pure functionality.
On the occasion of Wegner’s centenary Hatje Cantz in 2014 published Christian Holmsted Olesen’s monograph „Wegner - Just One Good Chair“, a book that mirrors the designer’s ethos by virtue of its beautiful layout and excellent content. It is roughly divided into two parts, a biographical account and a thorough overview and analysis of his furniture. In the first part Holmsted Olesen follows Wegner from the carpentry apprenticeships he began at age 14 over his relocation to Copenhagen and his studies at the local daytime school for artisans to his international breakthrough in 1949 and his late work. The second part then elaborates on the different categories of Wegner chairs, explains their sophistication with regards to constructive intelligence and details and also draws connections to models and influences. Wegner frequently returned to older designs in a move to improve and elaborate them, a working method that not only relates to the book’s title „Just one good chair“ but also documents his intense self-reflexion.
Christian Holmsted Olesen’s book is a true reference work, beautifully designed, intriguingly written and thus recommended to anyone interested in Danish modern design.
