Squid Game AU - Playing the marble game with Shoto Todoroki

You will compete with your partner in a marble game of your choosing. The loser will be eliminated.

"The game is simple," Shoto says, his ten marbles simply lying in the palm of his open hand. They should be the promise of something fun, a nice afternoon spent playing games with friends, and yet, you know they'll be coated in blood soon enough.

Will it be his or yours?

"Here are the only two rules. Listen well."

His free hand rises until softly stroking your shoulder, the gesture meant to be reassuring and yet bringing a cold shiver down your spine. It's one of the last times he's touching you, you know. It's one of the last times you can raise your eyes to his and gaze into his mismatched irises. It's one of the last times he gets to look at you lovingly, the promise of a future together stolen far too early by a stupid game of marbles.

"The rules are: you win, and I lose."

Your blood freezes in your veins. This can't be happening. This can't be happening. This can't be happening. Shoto doesn't give you enough time to protest and instead grabs your wrist in his lean, icy cold fingers to slip every single one of his marbles in your palm.

You feel like you can't breathe.

You feel like you're going to die if he says another word.

You feel like you've already been shot and yet you're the one with a golden ticket to your future and not him.

The stupid, unwanted future he won't be a part of.

"Shoto, you can't-"

"Sir?" he calls the masked guy standing stiffly next to the two of you. "We're done here. I lost."

It all goes so fast you don't even see it coming, not while your whole world is crumbling right under you feet at the exact same speed the man in a triangle mask raises his weapon towards Shoto's forehead.

"Don't look," he says with a soft, rare, kind smile. And, then, he whispers, lower, with a tenderness that stabs you in the chest to leave you torn open, bleeding to death. "Love you."

You don't obey his last demand, don't fulfill his last wish.

You look, and blood splatters on your face, in your eyes, on your lips as the bullet goes through his head, as he falls down to his knees and then on the ground, his body now cold, lifeless as it rests next to the stupid marbles that have slipped from your trembling fingers.

They're coated in his blood, now.

Squid Game AU - Playing the marble game with Katsuki Bakugo

"You're fucking kidding me," Bakugo growls, and it's the kind of sound that means nothing good is going to happen now, not if he has a say in it. The kind of sound that means fury is running in his veins, rage burning its way through his chest and brain, hatred coating his heart wholly and fully and leaving nothing behind but a trail of blood in Bakugo's wake.

You're not even sure if he noticed, but he caught your hand in a firm and yet tender grip as soon as the voice pronounced the deadly words.

In this game, you will compete with your partner.

Meaning one of you will get shot in the head in less than 30 minutes. And there is no escape, no way out now that the game has started. One of you will get to walk away from this hell of a fake little town, leaving the other's corpse behind, lying in a pool of blood.

Bakugo lets go of your hand to catch the masked man standing next to you by the collar of his red outfit. You hear him gag a bit under the black metal covering his face, but there's no struggling against Bakugo of all people. He could break anyone's neck with a flick of his wrist if only his opponent wasn't carrying a rifle in his gloved hands.

"What the fuck does this mean?" he barks, and for the first time, there isn't only pure anger dripping from his tone. Raw despair pulls at his vocal chords too, just like it pulls at your thoughts, at your chest, at your heart.

"Katsuki," you call, voice wavering as the masked man raises his weapon to your boyfriend's chest.

Bakugo has no choice but to step back, teeth gritted and fury in his gaze.

28 minutes left.

"I'm not going to play with you," he says then. "Think I care about those stupid marbles?" In a gesture filled with angry violence, he snatches your little satchel from your fingers and opens it with a snarl to slip his marbles inside. "Here, take them all. 'm not going to play with your life over some dumb fucking toys."

You try to get the satchel back from him, but he pushes you away.

"Wait, Katsuki! You have to play with me, you have to!"

You wouldn't be able to live with yourself if he laid his life out for you, and of course, you know, neither could he. He eyes you with a frown, assessing the situation, the little light in his gaze telling you that he does understand that you can't let him go down with a fight, because after all, that's what he is.

A fighter.

"Let's have a game with a 50% chance of winning, right, Kats'? Let's say I put a marble in one of my hands, if you can find the empty one you get my marbles, if you can't then I get yours."

After a few seconds, he nods.

He trusts you.

He shouldn't, not when both of your hands are empty, not when he finds nothing in your palm when you uncurl your fingers to show him the one he chose, not when you give him an apologetic smile as despair creeps over his features, taking over every single emotion in his crimson eyes.

"You win," you tell him, sliding the satchel in the pocket of his sweats.

You think he curses you, calls you something filthy, maybe tells you that he loves you, every single word slipping from his lips with the strength of an anchor pulling at your heart until it sinks down in your chest, until it disappears into the abyssal depths of the love you bear for the man you just saved by forfeiting your life.

He hates you for that now, but it's alright.

"Love you," you whisper as the shot echoes around the room.

And you don't see it, but maybe he falls down to his knees next to your corpse, and maybe he cradles it while crying for you, blood staining his fingers as he pushes back the strands of your hair that have fallen in front of your closed eyes. And maybe he holds you so strongly that his knuckles have turned white, and maybe Kirishima and Izuku have to pull him from your lifeless body so he'll be out of the room by the end of the countdown because he just can't make himself leave you behind. And maybe he hates them too as they do so, and maybe he hates the whole world and the rest now that there's nothing, no one left for him there.

And maybe he'll see you again in his dreams and you'll play marbles then but this time, he'll simply kiss you better if you loose.

"It makes sense now, but Akane-kun wouldn't like it," turning to your side you hug a pillow and hid your face in it, drowning yourself in your thoughts that is slowly being filled with insecurities that you had pushed away before.

You stop yourself before you could even finish, cause deep down you know he still wouldn't look at you or see you the way he does to Aoi- because you're not Aoi.

Your bard friend suggested after you told him about your little predicament, unable to fall asleep because of your active mind and a wild imagination that scared you enough for you to not be able to fall asleep. How he got into your room? Well, the wind vision bearer bard had heard you through the wind that entered your room as you sigh and complain to yourself about your situation and wanted to help, so he claims, maybe he just wanted to sleep over cause he has no where else to rest for the night.

"That would be highly appreciated, Venti" he smirk upon hearing your reply and immediately took out his lyre to play you a tune, a famous lullaby that every children of Mondstadt knew, familiar words enter your ears that you remember your mother used to sang to you when you were just a little lass, accompanied by Venti's comforting voice that you grew familiar and fond of.

Your body instantly relaxes, your eyes growing drowsy with every word that spills from the Bard's mouth, you grew sleepier and sleepier until your eyes grew tired enough to close, your body sink into the comfort of your mattress whilst your consciousness drift off to dreamland, finally getting your rest.

Venti ended the lullaby and placed his lyre aside, to cover you up with your blanket that protects you from the cold of the night, quietly he stare at the tranquil expression you wear as you sleep.

it was a good day in liyue. the sun was warm but not too hot to burn and the skies were a clear blue with no signs of rain coming anytime soon.

it was a rare opportunity so you decided to take a stroll in the forest.

after a few hours of berry picking, you stopped for a quick rest by the roots of a big and archaic tree.

unbeknownst to you, there was a certain slime floating right over your head.

and while you didn’t notice the foreign presence, someone else did.

you shrieked as xiao plunged right beside you, eyes dripping with strength and malice.

while diluc wanted to kill the slime, xiao wanted to decimate it.

he wasted no time and ran after the slime who bounced away in panic.

‘you almost died. twice.’ was all that ran in your head.

that is until the slime whimpered, effectively attacking your soft heart.

with a hesitant smile, you mumbled his name and xiao turns his attention to you.

were you hurt? did you need anything? should he race back to wangshu inn?

no, it was worse than that.

you wanted to keep… a slime? xiao briefly wondered if he accidentally hit you in the head or something.

good luck convincing him.

i’m not entirely sure how you’ll manage to do that because xiao was looking at you very strangely.

“come on, please? i’ll ignore the fact that you were practically stalking me when we agreed that you wouldn’t do that.”

“…”

it was a silence worth an hour at the very least. just as you were about to give up, xiao sighed and turned around.

“…tsk. you mortals and your odd behaviors.”

so now you have a slime child!

all was good in paradise.

…except xiao did not like the idea of playing daddy.

he would glare at the slime and prod at it when you mentioned some out-of-the-ordinary thing it did.

and god forbid you spend more time with the slime than with him. he just might snap.

like that one time you were gushing over the slime because it cuddled into you out of nowhere.

he waited until you left to get a drink before he stared at the slime. after a while, he reached out to tentatively pinch it which prompted an odd (in his opinion) sound from it.

it was like a more durable jelly and it’s very, very strange. it’s a little cold though and for some reason, playing around with it felt satisfying.

not like xiao would admit to it. he heard you climbing up the stairs and immediately withdrew his hands much to the slime’s complaints.

after that encounter, you notice the slime’s inclination to xiao.

like that one moment when you were fixing yourself a snack and when you turned around, it was gone. you intended to ask xiao for help but instead, you found the slime next to xiao just purring at him with puppy eyes despite the adeptus’ pointed attempts to ignore its presence.

one time, xiao was out and about, exorcising grudges and demons and all that fancy stuff.

in the middle of the fight, he spots the slime in the corner making heart eyes at him.

the way his heart dropped—

he swiftly finishes the one he’s battling and speeds to reach the slime.

he grips it very unceremoniously but you can excuse his attitude because he’s literally in the middle of a battle that could end with the both of them dead.

so now, there’s xiao battling cursed subjects with one hand because the other is too occupied carrying the slime.

after a while, he got enough room to breathe and he places the slime up on a tree.

“stay,” he says firmly as he pointed a finger at the slime. it was as if he was a father scolding a child.

in a way he was. trace amounts of disbelief and disappointment were in his tone but he wasn’t angry. 

he cleans up the rest of his enemies as quickly as possible and he brings the slime back to you.

you promptly began scolding it and the slime had the audacity to whine.

meanwhile, xiao was just crossing his arms in the background, watching the scene unfold.

even he had to admit that it was pretty cute.

later that night, you asked xiao to bring it along with him sometimes so it wouldn’t have to sneak around.

xiao surprisingly agreed.

since they’re around each other more often now, the slime slowly began carving itself a spot in his heart.

little taps of affection, not quite close to petting, just fingers lingering long enough for three quick pats.

sometimes, you’ll be on your way back to wangshu inn and you’ll spot them side by side, waiting for you.

even rarer, you’ll wake up around midnight to see both the slime and xiao missing but the soft sound of a flute being blown calms you down.

he’ll never confess to it but if anything happens to the slime, he’ll go out on his way to exterminate whoever did it.

it doesn’t matter if it’s a shrub or a treasure hoarder. they’re done for.

to sum it up, a very protective dad who pretends he doesn’t care but is always keeping an eye on it. 10/10

⠀✔︎ Zhongli realizes he loves you suddenly, though it’s been mounting for some time in the back of his mind. It hits him on a quiet night, when he’s at the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor signing papers. One moment he hopes that he hasn’t kept you waiting too long, and in the next his thoughts drift to you. Of how peaceful you look asleep, breath coming in steady whispers and brow devoid of furrows and stress. How you instinctively cling to him when he joins you in bed, even unconscious. Zhongli can’t help his smile, nor can he fault the way his chest feels fuller knowing that he has someone to come home to. The realization hits him, though, when he thinks that he wouldn’t mind spending the rest of his life with you in it, and it shakes the immovable geo archon so much that he doesn’t even realize he’s dropped his pen.

⠀✔︎ Diluc doesn’t realize he loves you for a long time–– mainly because he isn’t really familiar with the topic. At first, he finds it strange that his throat tightens up whenever you near him, or that he grows frazzled when you merely bring him a trinket that reminded you of him. He thinks he might be sick at first, and he confuses the hell out of Barbara when he relays his symptoms to her. It takes him having to consult Jean, then Lisa, then taking a good, long time to mull over the fact. His realization hits him fully when he sits near his father’s grave, pensive yet peaceful in the moment. He rambles aloud, as if his father could nod along to every word. He talks about how your eyes glitter when you talk about something you enjoy, about how he itches to hold your hand and wrap you in his coat on colder nights. And when his mouth is dry and he’s exhausted himself, it’s as if he could hear his father’s voice in his mind saying, “You’re in love, son.”

⠀✔︎ Kaeya realizes it relatively quick, but is in denial. He’s observant, so it’s easy for him to catch the way his stare tends to stick on you or how, when you enter a room, his head always raises and a smile quirks his lips. He knows the signs of budding feelings when he sees them, but at first he merely thinks of it as attraction and nothing deeper. It takes someone hitting on you at Angel’s Share for him to realize that it might not just be skin-deep, though. When you smile at the man who politely complimented you and asked if you’d like a drink, Kaeya realizes that even if he wishes to intervene, at the end of the day, you’re not romantically with him. This encounter pushes him to realize the depth of his feelings for you, to say the least. Thankfully, you politely decline the stranger, and the rest of your night is uneventful. But when he walks you back home, your hand in his, Kaeya finally accepts that what he feels for you is so much more than just infatuation.
