Also, I feel like a lot of the anons you're getting are not fully understanding Arajin's character or purpose in the narrative. More fundamentally, I think they're misunderstanding shame as a motivator. Like saying, "if he's so ashamed of himself he should be trying to get stronger" is such a misrepresentation of how shame works. You don't run towards the problem and try to overcome it you run away from it. To overcome something you have to reject that shame and believe in yourself in spite if it. You have to let go of shame to even be able to look at the problem head on. Arajin wouldn't want to get stronger (the desire that led to his trauma in the first place, by the way) because he doesn't believe that he can, and he's too ashamed to try.

I also have the theory that Arajin won't be forced to change until something happens to Matakara, like whatever is being teased in the intro.

Something I find fascinating is the way Matakara just refuses to take off his rose colored glasses when it comes to Arajin. Matakara is a kind, sincere and thoughtful guy, ready to fight injustice, so you would think he would not stand someone with a personality like Arajin. But that's not what's happening here. He always talks about the "super cool and kind and strong Ara-chan" even though this description could not be more removed from reality. Even as "Matakara's childhood friend", Arajin didn't have the strength to defend his opinions or protect Matakara (and the bullies make fun of him for that!)

I wonder what Matakara is seeing in Arajin, that we, the viewers aren't seeing yet

Maybe it was just due to lack of time, but I think it says a lot that we never saw Mitsukuni hospitalized until the end. I like to interpret this as Matakara now feeling supported, finally having the strength he needed to face his reality, and his brother showing signs of recovery is his reward for taking that first step

I’m so glad you mentioned this because I didn’t quite notice it as an added bit of their dynamic, but they both, as the should go, got a little bit of what they’ve wanted!!!! Which is really charming that they both kinda stay stubborn in their ways, regressing or simply doubling down respectively, and then actually both grow a little bit by the end! While obviously they should progress (or land somewhere other than where they’ve started until that’s another point/purpose), it’s just a charming detail they did get something, by actually dropping the delusion/confronting a bit of who they are and what things are actually like in reality.

They make me so ill, I think. I love my little bad coping mechanism mfs. They rlly thought if they just just dug their heels in, stubborn as shit, double down again and again, it’d just work out. Like no. Dumbass. I love them, though. They match each other’s narratively, but they haven’t caught got to the actual bestie / seeing each other completely yet. I agree!! I think something cool about bucchigiri is that fighting is neutral morality wise. It's an outlet for all kinds of emotions; it creates community and connection (ie arajin’s look-that-a-way welcoming party, the siguma & minato group combat date) but can also divide people (ie akutaro is kicked out of minato because he fought unfairly, matakara pushing everyone away by fighting people)

as someone who enjoys fighting as a hobby/sport, i feel like bucchigiri has some of the best messages about it. like, between people who respect each other, it can be a fun outlet and way to form community, but whether someone wants to actively pursue fighting or not isn't a judgement on their worth or character
