I feel you.😅
For the past week or so, Obiyuki has been on my mind like crazy, crazy. It’s like my new religion or something. I went into Akagami no Shirayukihime anime thinking that it would be a cute fairy tale romance between a prince and a commoner, but who knew that I’ll fall into the second lead syndrome hole again.
For some reason, I tend to like the second lead more than the first lead in most love triangles. Probably because the second leads I like tend to have more chemistry with the female leads than the main leads in my eyes. However, it hurts my soul when I have to see the second lead being used as drama fuel to boost the drama of the love triangle. So when I went into Akagami no Shirayukihime anime, I fully prepared myself that if there was ever a love triangle, I should suppress my second lead syndrome feelings and focus solely on the main leads because I don’t want to go into the void of second lead feels again.
Even when Obi showed up and caught his Young Miss when she was about to faint, I paid no mind, and believed that Obi was just a character that served a similar role as Kiki and Mitsuhide. No love triangle whatsoever. Everything was going smoothly and my focus was still on Zen and Shirayuki’s cutesy romance until…
this scene came:
My heart exploded. Pterodactyl screams left my mouth. All my focus and love for Zenyuki were gone, completely destroyed. This, was the cutest thing I have ever seen in the first season of this anime. Not even a passionate kiss shared between Zen and Shirayuki can ever captured the level of intense cuteness of Obi gifting a hairpin to his Young Miss.
What I love about this scene is that even though Obi is aware that his Young Miss is cautious about revealing her hair in public, he still decided to gift her a hair accessory. It’s like, he’s indirectly saying that she’s beautiful and her hair doesn’t deserve to be always hidden away. Also, the design of the hair accessory is so fitting. It has a red flower mark embedded on it, which compliments Shirayuki’s red hair. If Obi did pick it out instead of claiming to win it at a martial arts tourney, he sure does have a keen eye for details. The manga does this scene even more justice because it shows more details leading up it, such as Obi gazing at his Young Miss after Zen commented on how her hair is beautiful, and Zen asking Obi what kind of gift would she like, with Obi responding with an “I don’t know.” (BUT HE TOTALLY KNOWS OMG)
And then Season 2 just punched me in the feels with all the Obiyuki moments and fluff. I had to pause and compose myself whenever Obi and his Young Miss shared a moment together. They. Are. Just. Too. Cute. At this point, my resolve of not falling for the second lead was dead and I boarded the Obiyuki ship knowing that it’s bound to crash and sink eventually.
And then the manga doesn’t even give me any breathing room. The Obiyuki moments just keep coming. It’s CRAZY! My feels were choked, stomped, and murdered, and I had to wonder if this shoujo manga I was reading was actually a shoujo. Even though there are two male love interests, it doesn’t feel like a love triangle because there isn’t any intense drama, which I wholeheartedly love since I’m tired of the usual love triangle shenanigans. Romance is barely the focus of this series from what I have read so far. It’s more like an adventure, self-growth type of series. It’s a unique take on the shoujo genre, and I can’t wait to find out what kind of destinations the characters will find themselves at.
Also, the moments that Obi and Shirayuki share in the manga give me hope? That the Obiyuki ship might not sink, and that it can actually sail off towards the sunset without any icebergs in site? There are a lot of foreshadowings in the manga that I had to go back to several chapters and reread. If these foreshadowings lead to an Obiyuki ending, then Sorata is an absolute madwoman for making a bold and strategic move. If not, I will feel sad, but happy at the same time because the bond that Obi and Shirayuki shared, grew and bloomed into a beautiful sunflower that not even a heavy storm can uproot it. Also, Obi as a second lead doesn’t get trashed and burned for love triangle drama fuel, which I appreciate. He grew as his own character, and even if he doesn’t end up with his Young Miss, he can proudly walk towards his own future.
Before my Obiyuki rant approaches its end, I just want to say that I have never came across a love so pure like Obiyuki. Obi doesn’t resent or envy his Master for being together with his Young Miss. Hell, he actually supports them. He doesn’t want anything in return for all the things he has done for his Young Miss. He just want to see his Young Miss happy, healthy, and safe, and that is more than enough for him. Shirayuki provides Obi a home, a place to go back to with open arms and warmth. They both rely, TRUST, and walk with one another towards whatever path they choose.
They are pure perfection.
Now every romance I come across looks like potatoes to me because they can’t be compared to the absolute purity of Obiyuki. And thus, Obiyuki has consumed my soul and nothing can save me now :,)
Happy holidays and we hope that everyone has had an incredible and wonderful beginning of 2021. We know that things were not easy but, we made it!
We want to apologize to everyone for the delay, but we can guarantee that our Zine is happening and in its entirety and in full swing! We are in the final stages of editing and we can’t wait to show you all the content of talented artists and writers who went head, soul and heart into this project.
We can’t thank you enough.
Love to all of you and see you soon with more news about our long awaited Zine!
In college, I took two amazing courses–scratch that I took one amazing course and one semi-disappointing sub-par course–Fairytales and Graphic Narratives, respectively. And until right this very minute, I believed them to be an utterly, though fascinating, waste of my time and tuition though they made me smile. Okay, it was college so they didn’t always make me smile because finals are the worst but I digress the point I am trying to make is this:
I HAVE AN EPIPHANY CONCERNING MY BELOVED SHIP OBIYUKI DUE TO MY TEACHINGS!!
So, first and foremost the birth of my epiphany came from thinking back to my class on Fairytales when we studied Snow White! (Graphic Narratives didn’t really teach me much other than how to think more critically about…Graphic Narratives, so I guess it really doesn’t deserve any cred for this post TBH, lol.)
But like I said we studied Snow White.
Not this one:
Or whatever this one was supposed to be (sorry not sorry):
But, the original one. There are two versions (maybe there are more but I forgot them if there are) of the Grimm’s version of Snow White. In the very most original version, everything pretty much happens as we all remember it minus the singing: Snow White makes Queen step-trash jealous by her beauty, Queen step-trash tries to have her killed, due to her amazing beauty Hunstman is a wuss and lets her live because he’s weak to a beautiful damsel, Snow White plays Goldilocks and breaks into a dwarven settlement, the dwarves also wuss out and take pity on her because she is pretty and can cook/clean for them, then step-trash gets angry realizing she is, in fact, alive and goes out to kill her herself. Now, this is where everything diverges from what we know. In the original version step-trash has to try several times to kill her. Once with a bodice/corset torture device that basically suffocates her until the dwarves get home and cut her out of it, twice with an evil hair comb that kills her until the dwarves pull it out of her hair, and then thrice with the age-old apple trick. The poisoned magic apple gets lodged in her throat and she becomes a stone statue for all intents and purposes, so what do the dwarves do? What any logical group of men would do with a beautiful woman who isn’t decaying but still dead in their eyes, lock her in a gorgeous crystal casket so that they can still gaze upon her beauty on the daily! From here on there are two different endings to the Snow White saga. The very, very, first one published states that the Prince comes along says, “ooooooooh pretty, let me take her home with me and put her on display” and sits around gazing at her all the time until someone in the castle gets pissed off and hits Snow White’s corpse which dislodges the apple finally and wakes her up. What an awkward way to wake up yeah? And then the poor girl gets married to the Prince–ta-da! The second version makes it a lot better ending for poor Snow White. Someone trips while hauling the casket to the palace and dislodges the apple and then the Prince sweeps Snow White off her feet and yay happy ending they get married and now the Prince doesn’t seem as creepy just staring at a dead person all day long pissing off his staff.
(Whooo that was a lot of background info, sorry, and also I know that I could also do a huge comparison post on the tales of Snow White versus our Shirayuki tale, but that is for another day!!!)
Depending on what you want to go with there are so many ways you can analyze the story of Snow White–all of them, old, less old, new, even our beloved Shirayuki’s story–but one of the things that stick out in my mind is how in every single version of Snow White she is always a trophy of some sort. The Prince is always going to get his trophy wife in the end. Even in Shirayuki’s case, if she does end up with Zen (which I’ll die if she does) she will be nothing but a trophy wife. Even though Zen is precious and certainly not a bad guy by any means, he is a Prince, therefore their relationship will not be the same as normal couples have. She won’t be allowed to be an Herbalist and tend to the sick who may infect her and kill her before she can provide an heir. And poor Zen will still be stuck behind a pile of paperwork and responsibility to his Kingdom that he dearly loves.
But, hey who knows, maybe Sorata will go against the entire universe she has built in her storytelling and let Shirayuki be wild and free and a Prince’s wife…
I think this is where “A Romance that Cuts through Fate” comes in to play. Hopefully, if you’ve made it this far in my post (bless you if you have) you’re thinking what I’m thinking. Or maybe you’re thinking I’m a lunatic.

I wanted to do this for ages and now I will take my time to explain why I will definitely go down to hell (or up to heaven) with this ship. Obi stole my heart since his first appearance in the manga and even if I have already explained here why I love him more than Zen (i’m really sorry, Zen please forgive me), I really want to do some “proper posts” about one of my fav couple.
So here we go with the links to my other posts! (constantly updated under the cut!)
