I cannot believe I’m only 10k words away from writing the end of this 5k fic
PROTIP: Whenever you're feeling discouraged as a creator, think of the absolute worst popular media you've ever seen. Then remember that no matter how bad it was, it got popular
One thing I genuinely like about writing, is how the story unfolds as you write it. You may start with a general idea, but little did you know that something you put in the story would become a major symbol, or that two characters would grow as close as they did, or that apparently you need a scene between Character A and Character C…
I just love how the story grows under your fingers, and becomes something beyond what you first imagined.
if writing your novel doesn’t feel like herding cats, your characters aren’t developed enough
If your plot feels flat, STUDY it! Your story might be lacking...
Stakes - What would happen if the protagonist failed? Would it really be such a bad thing if it happened?
Thematic relevance - Do the events of the story speak to a greater emotional or moral message? Is the conflict resolved in a way that befits the theme?
Urgency - How much time does the protagonist have to complete their goal? Are there multiple factors complicating the situation?
Drive - What motivates the protagonist? Are they an active player in the story, or are they repeatedly getting pushed around by external forces? Could you swap them out for a different character with no impact on the plot? On the flip side, do the other characters have sensible motivations of their own?
Yield - Is there foreshadowing? Do the protagonist's choices have unforeseen consequences down the road? Do they use knowledge or clues from the beginning, to help them in the end? Do they learn things about the other characters that weren't immediately obvious?
I will confess here that I do have a favorite ship dynamic its that one reddit aita comment that goes "esh. Youre clearly just enabling each Others mental illnesses and are both fucked up and are perfect for each Other. Just Please Never involve anyone else in what youve got going on, Please."
