Richie froze when he saw the young man on the bridge. He was leaning on the bridge, staring at the river flowing below him.

“If you jump in I’m jumping after you,” Richie called before he could stop himself.

The man turned to face him at that and Richie wanted to kick himself as he recognized the young man.

“You’re Don,” he said coming closer, “Shit, man, I’m sorry.”

“Sorry for what?” Don rubbed his eyes angrily, “I came here for a stupid reason. I keep thinking Adrian is gonna turn up again but I know he’s dead, that bastard clown ate his heart.”

“That bastard clown killed my Adrian too,” Richie said before he could stop himself. He trusted Don though. If anyone could understand the grief and rage and pain he was feeling it would be him.

“Oh,” Don said, quietly and then looked at the carvings, “Where’s yours?”

Richie pointed to the faded R+E.

“So that clown was real,” Don shook his head, “I thought I was just going mad with grief.”

“If it makes you feel better,” Richie said leaning against the bridge, “My friends and I killed that clown.”

Don raised his eyebrows and looked almost intrigued, “I’d like to hear about that.”

“Coffee?” Richie offered.

“You paying?” Don indicated his empty pockets.

“Do I look like I’m made of money?”

“You’re Richie Tozier,” Don cracked a genuine smile for the first time, “You have to buy my silence before I tell the world all about your dirty little secret.”

“Not so secret anymore,” Richie shrugged.

“Not so dirty either,” Don mused as they turned and walked away from the bridge, “I never felt as good and as loved as I did when I was with Adrian.”

Richie hesitated but then said softly, “That’s how I felt with Eddie too.”

BIG HEART. And for that, he's already 100 better than his father. Human Quaritch would've left him to drown if he had been in Spider's place, but Spider knew better. notes on captain k

SPOILERS AHEAD!!

so personally i didnt believe captain k and finkel were nazis, despite being members of the german army and i feel the need to explain why. As freddie finkel had very few lines this will focus on captain k but it is applicable to both of them.

- as with the last time i wrote about this it always comes back to that final battle. any of the later reasons can be mostly disregarded if it werent for those pink triangles that provide the final necessary proof. i am certain that any true follower of the nazi party would wear the insignia of concentration camp prisoners, particularly one which later became such a marker of solidarity. the act essentially vandalises their uniforms, blatantly defying the nazi party. additionally rather than fight they made a mockery of their army playing ‘annoying music’ and firing at walls rather than people.

-before captain k is executed he tells jojo that rosie was a good person. in doing so he commends and praises her efforts to defy the regime, demonstrating a lack of belief in it

-he tries to get jojo to stop obsessing, trying to dissuade his opinions on jews and attempting to distract him from the topic 

-he saves elsas life. he was clearly aware that rosie and jojo were looking after elsa and came to interrupt the gestapo search (he had possibly done this before altho we will never know)

-he repeatedly expresses a lack of faith in the party. He is very much aware that they are being fed propaganda ‘And even though it would appear our country is on the back foot, and there really isn’t much hope of us winning this war, apparently, we’re doing just fine.’

-during the book burning he looked on sadly and remorsefully, clearly not participating or enjoying it

there were possibly other factors however these were the most evident. 

the reasons that i see that he may have joined the nazi army are as follows:

- he was enlisted and had no choice

- he once was a nazi but grew disillusioned and detached himself from those beliefs

- there isnt really evidence for this but he may have been working from the inside as a member of the resistance just as jojos father was

- he did what he believed he had to do to survive. ill admit its not the best reason to become a member of the nazi party but we have no way of knowing the danger he was in or what he felt he needed to do 

you are more than entitled to disagree with this entirely, this was simply my perception of the film and how i prefer to have read it
