So I don’t know how many of you saw this article where they interview Caleb:

https://www.indiewire.com/2022/07/caleb-mclaughlin-stranger-things-4-spoilers-1234739587/

The interviewer asks: You mentioned that Lucas was made fun of for his skin color, which was very jarring, and in Season 2 we had Billy not wanting Max to hang out with Lucas because he’s Black.

In the first place I don’t know why season 2 is being brought up now but secondly and more important I don’t know why an interviewer is asking a question about a scene which was never explicitly about race. There was never anything about Billy that spells it out clearly for the audience that this character is racist. He didn’t see Lucas in the parking lot without Max and go start harassing him. We didn’t see him targeting other black people or people of other races like at school or at the party he went to or at the pool in s3 before the MF stuff.

What we saw was Billy watching Max yell and cry during an interaction with a boy (who also happened to be black). We then saw Billy ask Max, “That kid you were talking to who is he?” Also, “why are you so upset” and “he causing you trouble?” Questions not tied to Lucas’ race and ones he asked because of the interaction he witnessed between them. Billy also said to Max, “but we’re family now whether we like it or not, meaning I’m stuck looking out for you.” Which to me was his backwards way of saying he cared about her and cared if someone was upsetting her. But I think the other implication from that line is that whatever Max did the consequences fell onto Billy, like we saw the night Max snuck out and Billy’s dad attacked him for it. It stands to reason then that Billy was also worried about his dad finding out Max was spending time with Lucas because it wouldn’t be Max getting in trouble it would be Billy.

The night Billy went to the Byers and grabbed Lucas and slammed him back against the wall I don’t think it was about his race either. Billy had just been hit by his father and was feeling angry and upset and out of control. I personally know what that feels like having grown up in a similar environment. He likely felt helpless and just wanted someone else to hurt the way he was hurting. Someone like Billy was never taught healthy coping skills. I’m older and away from my abusive family and in therapy and I still struggle with my emotions sometimes, so someone young and still living in that kind of environment and never having known any other way to express themselves is going to lash out.

Billy wanted someone to know he was in pain and the only way he knew how to express that was through anger. Which he took out on first Steve and then Max in the only way he could which was to go after Lucas. I will never not believe that if it had been Dustin Billy had seen Max with at school and then the arcade that he wouldn’t have gone after him instead.

I also don’t believe that Billy was planning on beating the shit out of a tween. I think he was angry and trying to piss Max off but I’ve seen people literally say that Billy was trying to kill Lucas or planning on killing Lucas that night but based on what? What exactly had Billy done to prove he was violent before then? People say he was intentionally going to hit the boys on their bikes earlier in the season but I call total bs on that. Even if he seriously wanted to (which I don’t think he did he was clearly just fucking around) do you really think he’d want to actually hurt or kill a bunch of kids and then have to deal with the consequences afterward? This is a teenager who is still crying at home while he’s being beaten up by his dad. Yeah I’m so sure he’s looking to get arrested for plowing into a bunch of kids with his car.

My point is that people say that Billy was this incredibly dangerous person who was going to kill Lucas but there’s just no proof of that. He acted like an asshole a lot in season 2 but being an asshole doesn’t make you a murderer or someone who is going to beat the shit out of a kid. Billy did say to Lucas, “you are so dead Sinclair” but plenty of people have said that phrase even when angry without actually intending to kill anyone. He had Lucas in his hands if he had wanted to he easily could have hit him long before Lucas kneed him in the balls or before Steve punched him and he didn’t because he wasn’t trying to seriously hurt Lucas he was trying to scare the shit out of him so Max would stop running off to see him and so it would be one less thing that would incur the wrath of his father.

Caleb’s response to the question: Thank you for reminding me! I was reading comments recently and I remember people’s theories on part two of Episode 9. People were like, “What trauma has Luke gone through?” And I was looking through everything like, well, his girlfriend’s brother didn’t like him for being Black, also he was being made fun of [for] his skin color in Season 1. People miss those things. I love Dacre, he’s an amazing actor, his character Billy is amazing, but Billy really isn’t a great guy. Jason is actually a better guy; Jason was just misunderstood. Jason took Lucas in, was trying to show him the ropes — maybe he was arrogant, a little obnoxious, but he wasn’t racist. He wasn’t really that bad. His girlfriend died, he thought Eddie killed her, and then he was just trying to be the superhero but ended up getting cut up in half, sadly. Lucas’s girlfriend’s brother hated him because he was Black and threw him up against the wall in Season 2, and was like “Stay away from her.” I think people miss this! I don’t know why.

I get that Caleb is black and I’m white and therefore he’s going to respond to media in a different way than me sometimes. If he feels like the scenes with him and Billy are racist than that’s his right to feel that way. But that doesn’t mean I have to and it doesn’t mean every person who watches ST does either. I know  the Duffers intended to have Billy be racist but that doesn’t mean what they wrote or intended was what was translated to the screen or communicated well to the audience. As others in fandom have pointed out the fact that there are so many takes on Billy and these scenes proves that the Duffers weren’t clear with this part of the story they were telling.

I get that racism doesn’t always mean a white person calling a black person the n word. I know that there are quieter more subtle moments of racism that black and brown and other poc have to deal with every day, still how you incorporate such serious issues into a fictional story matters. If you’re intending to communicate to your audience that a character is racist there’s ways to do that without needing to be super cliche and overt but still being being clear about character motivations and I don’t feel like the Duffers did that with Billy.

But to Caleb’s other point in his response I sincerely do not get how he can say Jason was a better person than Billy and “just misunderstood”. Jason literally held Lucas at gun point and had a whole team of basketball players with weapons out looking for him (and the rest of the Hellfire Club). Plus if you’re going to call Billy a racist for the scraps of nothing scenes that happened between him and Lucas in season 2 then you sure as hell need to call Jason and his friends racist for inciting the whole town against a club Lucas was in. Holding down Erica with her arm behind her back keeping her from getting away (in a way that the police often do). Threatening, beating up, and almost killing Lucas with a gun. Jason also accused Lucas of having done something to Max and Chrissy when he saw Max unable to move. Which a white guy accusing a black man of doing something sinister to a white woman is a racist tale as old as time.

I just don’t get how so many people are able to empathize with Jason and I’ve even seen some people say Henry was misunderstood, and even Brenner has defenders yet there is still so much hate for Billy. No one has to like Billy. We all don’t have to have the same opinions on ST or every scene in the show. But I don’t get how you can have a character that was on the show for two seasons see how he experienced abuse and abandonment since he was a little boy and how he was still very much experiencing it in his daily life and just say yup he was piece of shit who didn’t deserve to live.

And I’m not saying that Caleb said that exact thing but the Duffers certainly did and many many people in fandom have. Caleb did however talk about how sad it was that Jason died and defended his actions saying “he wasn’t really that bad” and “he was just trying to be the superhero” (because his girlfriend was killed) while at the same time talking about how awful he thought Billy was.

I just feel like most of the time when people talk about Billy now especially in any official capacity it’s to talk about what a horrible person he was without acknowledging at all the abuse he was dealing with or the fact that he was a hero who fought so hard against the Mindflayer and ultimately sacrificed himself to save all of them.

Billy was eighteen and no matter what you think of some of his actions in season 2 he had the ability to grow and change and he should have had that chance. If you defend people like Jason and don’t give a second glance to Billy you’re a fucking hypocrite and this includes anyone who worked on the show too.

You can think that Billy’s actions were racist and still believe he had the capacity for change. I’ve seen so many people in this fandom who are in their teens and early 20′s say awful stuff about Billy but what I think a lot of you don’t understand is that you are not the same person you are in your teens/20s that you end up as later in life. Billy was 18 and even if he had some wrong ideas about people and life from his father (the only real role model he knew) he had time to change and grow. I hope no one ever tells you that you aren’t capable of growth and change because you are, that’s like the major point of growing older. Billy was still a baby at 18 he never even got to live a life away from his dad. When you’ve grown up in an abusive home you don’t even know who you are really until you get out because you’re doing everything just to survive.

Billy matters just as much as every other character on this show. If we are supposed to empathize with Jason for loosing Chrissy and with El for dealing with abuse from Brenner or the bullying this season then we should also be able to do the same for Billy.

Thanks for reading if you made it all the way to bottom.❤️ I know this got super long I’m just tired of seeing Billy be this shows bad guy punching bag.

I've just finished the most recent chapter of an AMAZING fic called Song of the Banshees by Anglotron on ao3, if I'm not mistaken the writer is @letsunity and, I gotta say it, it's incredible. Hands down one of the best Avatar fics I've recently read, and it just made me fall in love with Recom Quaritch. And yeah, it may be just fanon but it does makes me wonder how much of that "idea" James Cameron might actually use for the next movies.

Like, Quaritch's now much more than a villain. He's not even the "big" villain anymore. He's much more than Human Quaritch, and that has a lot of potential.

I've Just Finished The Most Recent Chapter Of An AMAZING Fic Called Song Of The Banshees By Anglotron

And I just need it. I need the conflict. I want to see Recom Quaritch finding out about the wonders of Pandora, I want him to fall in love with it in the same way Jake did as in a somehow twisted karma's type of way. I want him to suffer by not knowing who he is anymore, and I want Spider to be his whole motivation. I want him to feel guilt over all what his past self did, and what he now self already did too (like Neteyam's death). And all thanks to Spider. Istg Spider has to be his downfall, my daddy issues crave them bonding how they actually deserve.

But, returning to the fic, pls read it. It's just wonderful, and it explores the whole "I'm Quaritch, but I'm not actually him nor I know if I want to be him either" thing I feel Recom Quaritch has going on perfectly. Big and honorable mention to the author on making Quaritch actually naming his ikran cupcake a thing

Everyone in this show is so gun ho about running billy through the ground because of his faults. Questioning the value and merit of my boi’s life. When other systems and people in the show are more at fault than he is. Yeah it’s normal for max to think her brother shouldn’t be saved. Yet it’s also concerning to me because he didn’t deserve to die like that. He isn’t some irredeemable monster. He was a kid failed multiple times in the storyline. I don’t hate Max as a character but I think it’s a flaw that she’s unsure if Billy deserve to be saved. It understandable why she thinks that Billy mistreated her. Billy has a lot of unlearning he needs to do. That doesn’t mean he should never be afforded the chance to heal and live a happy life. Billy was a brave kid who didn’t deserve to get his chest ripped out by a spider monster at 8TEEN. In my less than humble opinion.

THE SANDMAN is no longer nr 1 on Netflix. We need to change that.

It seems that Netflix is still unsure whether to renew it or not. In any case, they have not yet renewed it (it has only been a week, but still).

So please, stream the crap out of it. Leave it running in the background and just check in once in a while, if you don't have the time to consciously watch it, convince your friends and family to watch it (again), try watching it in a different language, etc.

How great would it be if we made it nr 1 again?
