Togashi subverted pretty much every trope in a typical shounen story and it’s amazing.
Gon- an exploration of the young male shounen protagonist in a way that actually explores the inherent selfishness and moral ambiguity that comes with the immaturity of youth. He’s earnest and loving yet so undeniably selfish and neglectful. These negative traits are seen at their absolute worst during the chimera ant arc, which, as I’ve seen people observe before, is another subversion of the trope where a protagonist pushes themselves to the absolute limit to defeat an enemy.
Killua- an exploration of emotional growth and empathy. There is a ton to say for Killua’s character, but most notably to me in the context of trope subversion is his codependency on Gon. This unfaltering, unflinching loyalty at the detriment of his physical and emotional wellbeing is something that doesn’t get explored a lot in shounen with characters of a similar archetype.
Kurapika- in terms of trope subversion, he is the most serious, stoic and calculating of the bunch while also being notably androgynous and at times feminine. He wears earrings, he has long hair, he wears robes that resemble traditionally “feminine” clothing and he crossdresses to achieve his goals. Despite all of this, he is taken seriously by the cis straight males in the fan base and is considered a total badass. I really enjoy that the femininity in his character isn’t demeaning or always played for laughs.
Leorio- the most masculine of the main group and yet also the most emotional/compassionate/empathetic. His main goal is to help others and to be a healer- another traditionally “feminine” aspiration.
I love Hunterxhunter
for the sake of archiving, yknow, here are some of my first few sketches for hxh that i made waaaaaaay back in 2018
i love that the right way to draw gon's hair is to just make it the fuck up for yourself so that it feels right, but isn't how it's actually drawn
My friend and I are doing a screencap redraw style comparison challenge. She chose the screencap. This scene left me shook.
Remembering how this is all art by official VLD crew members.
"Klance wasn't queerbaiting" my ass
Hey. Minors following me. Internet safety is key!! NEVER include these in your bio/byf:
Medical diagnoses - this is nobody's business but yours. You don't owe anyone an explanation for why you are the way that you are
Trauma - same reason as above
Triggers - people can use these against you! Don't give people tools to hurt you. No one has to know what tags you block. Just block tags to stay safe!
Age - age is okay for adults to include but is iffy when you're a teen. Predators want this information, don't give people more than they need. Just state that you're a minor, that's all that anyone needs to know.
In general: stay safe. If you're not comfortable with every stranger out there having access to this information, you shouldn't post it on the internet.
Play devil's advocate and ask yourself about what would happen if someone searched for your information with intent to hurt you. You do NOT owe anyone an explanation!
People go on about good healthy queer rep but I cannot express how much I want unhealthily devoted queer rep. Raise your lover from the dead no matter the cost. Kill to get them to safety. Trade your soul for theirs. Die to reunite with them. I want gothic hyper-devotion codependent lovers
