How did Annabeth Chase even bag Percy?

Listen he has his flaws (like all the other characters) but he's still too good for her, especially with how she treats him.

Annabeth treatment of Percy is sometimes pretty unhealthy, to be frank. They love each other and there are many sweet moments and poetic parallels (that I can't be bothered to find, go dig through the Percabeth blogs for those theses.)

They had a pretty good friendship when she wasn't punching him or calling him a nickname that he had to grow used to simply because she wouldn't stop or making him think really hard about what he had to say or calling him a coward for the crime of *Checks notes* being stressed about a high chance of possible death!

Hm. Even their friendship was somewhat unhealthy at times.

And if you pull out the emotionally stressed card, then why didn't she apologise to him for it later? Not everything requires an apology, of course, but this does.

They also have a really nice romantic relationship when she's not judo flipping him and victim-blaming him for getting kidnapped, when she's not bringing up Rachel to keep him on his toes, when he's not almost scared to death by her and when she doesn't hit him.

It baffles me how Rick is able to write such toxicity in his relationships. Like. Rick. You know that this is unhealthy behaviour, right? You do know that having a healthy fear of your partner is not normal. It's not normal for them to hit you either (and don't get me started on the 'but they're demigods!' because Annabeth is the only one whom we see exhibit this kind of behaviour. Clarisse and her cabin don't count because this behaviour is negatively associated with them and they're called out on it while Annabeth is not.) It's not normal for you to get used to a nickname that they keep calling you (this was in TTC too, before he went off his rocket.)

You know that, right, Rick? You know it?

She was pretty much the only girl that he really interacted with throughout the series. Sally doesn't count (I'm talking about people of his age, plus she's his mom) Thalia went away after one book and Rachel came in later and left soon. Annabeth is also one of Percy's only friends (apart from Grover and Nico, who don't interact with Percy that much after HOO and then there's Rachel who drops out of his life fast after becoming the Oracle.) In fact, she's the person with whom he interacts the most. So that explains a lot of it.

I don't think that he's too good for her, but I would really like her unhealthy behaviour towards him to be called out and fixed. It would be absolutely amazing if it was treated as a character flaw, which, unfortunately, won't happen.

A potential reason for why Rick didn't make Ares love his children, and an explanation for why he should have

So, in the PJO series, Rick makes Ares hate his children. Or, if not hate, at the very least ignore them and be abusive to them like all the other gods.

And I've always found this an odd choice, because in the myths, Ares really loved his children more than the other gods. He killed his daughter's rapist, who was a son of Poseidon, whom we also know loved his children, and so of course Ares probably knew that Poseidon would retaliate, right? And Poseidon is more powerful than Ares and he could definitely hurt him if he wanted to.

And Ares still kills Poseidon's son anyway, because he raped his daughter Alcippe, knowing that he would most likely be punished for this and he still does it. That just speaks volumes of love when he could've ignored his daughter for his own safety.

He also gives Hippolyta a magical belt that makes her stronger because she's the best out of all the Amazons, implying his pride about it.

He tries to avenge his son Cycnus when Heracles slays him-and Cycnus DESERVES IT, he literally stole Apollo's sacred grove and his offerings, and Ares still tries to avenge his death (they were even riding chariots together when Heracles encountered them, do what you will with that).

And a lot of people say that Rick made Ares neglect his children for the sake of the plot, but here's my counter argument-

Rick should've made Ares love his children TO STRENGTHEN PERCY'S BELIEF IN FIGHTING FOR THE GODS.

Imagine not knowing if you're even fighting on the right side. Imagine wondering if Kronos really was right, does your godly parent care about you?

And then imagine seeing Ares come down and talk to his children and encourage them.

And you're envious that they get to see their parent and you don't, but you also feel that fighting spirit come into you. This man, right here, he's showing that the gods can change, that they're not all bad, that there's something worth fighting for on their side.

(Also cue the angst and comedy of Ares and Percy hating each other and Ares being a good parent to his kids and actually being there for them while the whole Poseidon and Percy shebang goes on).

Anyway:

I highly doubt that Piper, the teenaged daughter of a famous Hollywood movie star, had 0 access to phones growing up. I could see Tristan blocking certain social media apps to try and protect her (cause people are gross online to teenage girls and I don’t think he’s that incompetent of a parent to not care, especially as his fame grew). It meshes well with her backstory as well - Jane/ another assistant/ Tristan himself could’ve handed Piper a phone and expect that to fix her need for parental attention that wasn’t purely monetary, especially since Tristan wouldn’t’ ve known about demigods not being safe near phones

Frank could’ve not been allowed a phone due to his grandmother knowing about the Poseidon ancestry (if I remember right), but he also had the most normal childhood compared to the rest of the 7, as he likely went to a regular school (I remember he mentions participating in spelling bees), so he would’ve been around them for a good chunk of the day

Maybe consistency with his own worldbuilding is too much to ask from Rick anymore

This-all of this. You're right. Frank's grandmother could not be around him and protect him all the time. He would have used some technology-he would have encountered some monsters.

I wish we knew if he was homeschooled or went to normal school. We don't even know that much about his pre-CJ life.

My theory as to why Rick added the judo flip

I was thinking about how weird it was that Rick added the judo flip scene to the reunion and I have a theory for why he did it.

Percabeth's reunion was supposed to be happy and romantic, and a judo flip is the antithesis of that.

My theory (And keep in mind that this is only a theory, so don't take it as canon) is that he added the judo flip in to make the scene unique.

Listen-every reunion scene like Percabeth's is happy and romantic, right? Happy couple is separated, they go on a journey to find each other and when they do it's seventh heaven and euphoria again. They kiss, hug, laugh, cry happily and declare that they'll never leave each other again.

Rick probably wanted to do that with Percabeth but he also didn't want to make it just another generic scene-he wanted to add somethjng distinctive that made it stand out. Not just 'Oh, it was a really sweet reunion scene' but 'Yeah, she judo flipped him! Crazy, right?' Something that people would remember, not just dismiss as another lovey-dovey reunion scene.

Thinking about going through the next year without my dad is literally so terrifying that I start to cry.

Now that I've lost my dad, I'm feeling kind of overwhelmed about next year, which is important for me. I thought he'd be there to help me, but he's gone. It feels scary honestly. I don't know what to do.

I keep thinking about Piper and Hazel, the girls, being the ones who have unique eye colors and not Frank and Leo, the boys, who are allowed to have normal eye colours.

It's intersectionality-they're girls of color, so they have to be prettier, but the boys of color don't have to be as good-looking because they'e boys.

Rick really just missed the opportunity to tell us about Bianca and Nico having dyslexia and ADHD and living in the literal 1930s, huh? Were they kicked out? Did they have to move from school to school? The only thing we know is that Nico studied Dante in elementary school. Other than that? Nothing.

I bet you my whole fortune that Nico and Bianca probably had some kind of trauma from the schooling in Italy. Maybe that's why Bianca felt that she needed to take care of Nico-they were ostracized in school for their weirdness (AKA ADHD and dyslexia). And Maria was such a nice mother, but would she really understand? She didn't have ADHD or dyslexia. And even if she did know about the perils of being a demigod, even then she wouldn't really be able to understand Bianca and Nico. Sympathise with them, protect them a little, but she still wouldn't understand.

Not 'Annabeth Chase they could never make me hate you' or 'Annabeth Chase they could never make me love you' but 'Annabeth Chase what the FUCK did he do to you.'
