They'd been arguing for about an hour. Yelling at each other and throwing stuff all over the car. Before that they'd been laughing their asses off, for a good 10 minutes too. Until his phone rang and she threatened to throw it out into the rain.
At least that's how Amara thinks it went down by the looks of it. Her mom's car's only close enough to see the whole thing go down, too far for her to hear anything. All she can hear is Me and Your Mama by Childish Gambino blasting through the radio. She purses her lips when the woman leaves the car. She knows its her fault.
Although to be fair, Amara had no idea that Lakeith was with his wife this weekend, let alone in the same grocery store parking lot. She only saw his face clearly after Nia started playing with his blinkers and started yelling. She actually called to joke about seeing a guy who looks a lot like him in the parking lot.
But she called at the wrong time.
Amara grimaces as her eyes follow Nia who storms off into the store, probably to get herself a bottle of wine to calm her down. She turns her head back to Lakeith's car to find him frowning at her from across the lot. "Fuck," she mutters, scrambling to find a mask and her sunglasses. She quickly slips them on and slides down her seat, hiding behind the steering wheel in shame.
She checks stares at her phone waiting for him to call or send a lengthy text about how much trouble she was in.
Nothing.
Maybe he left, she thinks to herself. She shifts her body, positioning just enough to take a peek at his car. There's no one there. "Maybe he followed her into the store," she says.
A knock on the window startles her but she doesn't look immediately. She's afraid it's him. "God, I know we don't have the best relationship and that I haven't been to church in years, but please God, I am begging you to not let it be Lakeith," she silently prays as she turns her head slowly.
It's her mother. And she looks pissed.
"Thank you Lord," Amara chuckles as she opens her window. "Yes ma?" Her mother rolls her eyes. "Vula iminyango. Ziyasinda ezizinto," her mom demands. "Yes ma." Amara happily obliges, even getting out of the car to help her mother with the groceries.
After putting the bags in the trunk, the women are back in the car, ready to go. Right before Amara starts the car, her phone dings with a notification.
It's a text from Lakeith.

I will have what she is having
More of this! Insurrection needs consequences.
You break the law? You get a trial. Get convicted? Lose your elected office. Simple.
I realize that Iām order to explain slavery to white people, you have to speak to them in their white language (true crime documentary). And I realize itās not all white people so please use your comprehension skills when reading this.
Your ancestors were Jeffery Dahmers and Ed Geins of their generation, before there was a Jeffery Dahmer or Ed Gein š. There, does that help you realize that this shit isnāt āa long time agoā for us? That this isnāt something that we can just āget overā? If your obsessive need to reintroduce serial killers to the masses by giving them sympathetic villain-esq movies then I donāt wanna hear shit about black people talking about slavery and systematic racism too much. Let me give you a list of what these people have done:
Used our teeth for dentures
Used our hair to stuff furniture because the cotton they had us pick was too valuable
Used our skin as leather
Whipped, burned, lynched, dismembered us
Sexually assaulted us and forced us to have their mulatto children that they wouldnāt claim unless it was as property
Wrote us down as cattle/livestock and didnāt consider us as human
Put us in zoos or kidnapped us for circuses
Use us as medical and scientific experiments (I.e, Henrietta Lacks, Sara Bothem, the way women are expected to give birth on their backs)
You donāt even wanna know where the term motherfucker came from so donāt ask
Manipulate the system to work in their favor even though they like to blame us and other minorities for its failures
Steal our work
This list can go a lot longer than this but just know, this isnāt a game. This isnāt old news, this isnāt some flyby night movie thatāll have Twitter all ablaze until the next scandalous topic pops up. This is a generational curse.
*reblog if you agree*
Hell, I'd be hype for this even if it weren't a true story!
You wasnāt in love with him at all
You couldnāt see yourself falling for him but for the first time
You saw him in a different light as your fingers traced his tattoos on his chest.Ā āY/N, honey.ā He leaned in closer toward you, his lips hovers yours.
āAndy..ā your voice was low.
His gaze slowly met yours as his tattoo palm cupped your cheeks.Ā āYou donāt have to pretend anymore with me. Let your heart accept me,ā
