File Under Fine Art: What is Nudity?
Pardon my absence the past week. I have been in Florida where it snows never, shines stronger sun, and offers communities single, double, even triple gated for your safe retirement. But upon my return, New York proved to me once again why it is great: The Armory Show Modern. Some great work from artists all over and in such a monstrous locale it took hours to get through. I imagined many of the attendants of this contemporary art show having the below conversation.
The Fine Art of Design.
Did a magazine ad for a great vintage shop in Palm Springs. Was a fun project and allowed me to do more textural work which I’ve been getting into recently, and a touch of screentone which I’ve found hard to incorporate into my style but like the challenge a lot.
I’ve been a bit busy with Regulation Room stuff and summer stuff like bicycling and getting real panicky about the warmth and sunshine almost being over. I drew some people’s heads in pixelart for the RegRoom team members page which’ll be in the next version that is launching real soon.
This is an alternate look for the upcoming art for DJ Lani Love's new summer mixtape. In this version, the text for Lani Love is large and interacts with the front row of trees. I really liked this treatment but also have to admit that Ms Love was right in requesting a smaller, more cohesive nametag down at the bottom. Final version coming soon.

I've recently been turned on to scoring baseball games. It involves intricate note-taking, pens and attention to detail (i.e. just the right thing for me.) I was a bit stressed though, having to use the provided scoresheet in the program. It was too small to allow for any flourishes of the pen whatsoever and did not keep track of how many hot dogs and beer I consumed or how many high-fives I gave out or got. This is why I chose to make my own.
Not to mince words - this is the Cadillac of scoresheets. Each team has two 8.5x11 sheets of luxurious score-keeping real estate. I've added in special marks too, like whether a pitcher is a lefty or righty, an icon for pitcher change (oh so important to note to keep accurate pitcher stats), and most importantly, a wonderfully large at-bat cell, with room to draw hit trajectories and cleanly label out sequences. If you don't really care about size, you can always look to the wonderful Eephus League package, but I needed a bit more room and details.

I play with my banana all day at work. https://www.instagram.com/p/BsOn-qzH8rm/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1gttg3n3azmet
The day at the end of 4 days, as long as you start that count on a Monday.
Process Post: Cover Art
Again, a view into the way I work for better or worse. Process of the cover art for DJ Lani Love’s winter mixtape Snow To Stars. Projects for Lani always get me to work in a more sleek, hip fashion. Not much room for smiling pixelart or batmen, but I’d like to think I can do cool too. You be the judge (I’ve decided this is going to be pretty cool if I stick to it, but your confidence is highly appreciated).
Step 1 & 2.
Left: Extra rough sketch for the basic layout and concept. I went with the snow and stars. Right: Less awful rendering of Ms. Love. Coolness tip: head slightly raised, shoulders slightly back? Coolness. Who knows why.
Step 3 & 4.
Left: Serious cleanup of the face and hair with a rough shape for the space-blouse. Right: Her hair loaded the right side of the frame unexpectedly - so the sweet gloves and dropping the collar for a bit more asymmetrical balance.
Step 5.
Clean it all up. Next step will involve the tough decisions of shading, color, text, etc.
May - Catwoman.
Continuing the 2015 calendar, this month is Catwoman à la Tim Sale’s covers on the excellent When In Rome series who worked à la the excellent René Gruau. I used a Gruau illustration for pose reference and the Sale covers for general styling. As a bonus, the recipient of these pages liked this one best so far. More coming.
