Can we please just acknowledge the sheer absurdity the “Kuzon’s Parents” disguise scene:
Deadass Katara just stuffed her shirt with melons, did nothing else to even pretend that she was older than 14, Sokka put on what was probably an incredibly fake-looking beard and pulled the most shakespearean accent he could muster.
They just saunter on in with their son who looks literally nothing like either of them, but also almost the exact same age. The headmaster probably just thinks “Fuck it. Okay. Benefit of the doubt. I’m not particularly well-versed in the ethnicities of the colonies maybe this is just normal. Adoption maybe? Good skin care?”
And then when he asks their names, Sokka just comes out guns blazing with surnames- which is implied (but not confirmed) to be sort of nobility status. And not only is their cover story that they have surnames in the first place, but that their name is Fire. Wang Fire and Sapphire Fire.
Can you imagine just being a Canadian school principal meeting a student’s parents for the first time and you just see these rogue teenagers showing up saying “Hello yes my name is Sir Jason Toronto and this is my wife Poutine.”
Looks like you made a new friend, Sokka.
Aang a few years after the war thought it would be a good idea to write up a will of sorts, mainly because while he doesn’t have many personal things, he wanted to make sure Appa and Momo were taken care of should the worst happen.
He chose Sokka, Sokka snottily and loudly cried happily when he was asked.
Piando: You often use humor to deflect serious trauma.
Sokka: Thank you.
Piando: I didn’t say that was a good thing.
Sokka: What I’m hearing is, you think I’m funny.
it is unfortunate that ppl seem to ignore what a miserable grumpy little asshole sokka is because I personally think it is one of his very most endearing qualities
“Suki is a valuable member of Team Avatar, and if you exclude her due to lack of screen time, you’re a coward.” I say into the mic.
The crowd boos. I begin to walk off the stage in shame, when a powerful voice speaks and commands attention from the room.
“She’s right.” I turn to see the speaker, and there, in the back row, is Sokka of the Southern Water Tribe himself.
Aang and Sokka’s friendship is proof that vegetarians and meat-eaters can still be buddies
Snuffles (canon)
Caveman (mix of someone telling her the Omashu caves story and also Toph sticking him in a cave once when he was pissing her off)
Crabmeat (a crab tried to eat him)
Fishfood (a fish tried to eat him)
Birdseed (Sokka has bad luck with animals)
Loverboy (c’mon, royalty sees him and are like o.o, anyone have dibs on that?)
Shorty/Short Stuff/Strawberry Shortcake (he becomes the tallest before Aang’s growth sport and Toph is in denial)
Baby Bro (related to above, but also made Sokka cry, so Toph keeps saying it <3 )
Adopted (this one confused Katara bc she can’t tell if it’s suppose to be an insult or a compliment)
Porcelain (a teapot breaks and Toph pretends to think it’s sokka’s skull)
This isn’t related to anything and definitely not directed at you but I wanted to vent and I love your blog. I wish there was deeper love for Sokka in the fandom :( I feel like he usually just gets treated as a hot beefcake who’s just there to comfort and/or top Zuko, rather than being a complex character with his own emotional baggage and insecurities he’s still growing through. I think he grew up too soon having to take care of everyone and I think he needs someone to care for him too.
You’re right and you should say it anon!!! This is a Sokka stan account. Okay but like Sokka is such a wonderful and amazing character. Like you said he has emotional baggage and insecurities. The boy is traumatized. And like he’s funny-that’s for sure but he is not just comedic relief.
Sokka lost his mother too. And then his father went off to war. Sokka had to assume the role of a leader far before any child should have to even think about it.
I think Sokka’s trauma manifested in protective behavior. With Katara, there is so much anger, especially relating to the fact that her mother died protecting her. But with Sokka, his mother was killed because she was thought to be the last waterbender in the SWT- but it’s really his sister. And Katara is in innate danger just by existing. At some level, Sokka has to be aware of this at all times.
And I don’t think Katara gets this. In the first episode, she says
Ever since mom died, [Points to herself.] I've been doing all the work around camp while you've been off playing soldier!
Even from this line, we establish up front that Sokka has assumed the role of the protector. He’s 15. He’s so young. So young. And like as the series progresses, we understand why we unlock his tragic back story so to speak and it’s just- he loves his friends and family so much and everything he does is to keep them safe. Like the library? get more info on the fire nation to keep his friends safe from them.
And like Sokka works so hard and he’s so good at everything he does. And he’s so smart and loving and caring and all he wants to do is keep the people around him safe. And like then he meets Yue and falls in love with her and then she turns into the freaking moon. Like oh my god?? The trauma??? Therapy, please!!!!
And we don’t see that effect Sokka that much. In fact, the first major time we see how it holds him back is with his relationship with Suki and it’s this moment where we have to realize that Sokka is moving forward for everyone else sake- they don’t think about the events that happened at the NWT the way he does, it’s just another thing he’ll have to carry by himself.
Yeah, Sokka man. He’s so great. He’s so well-written and we need to give him more love because he is amazing.
are you guys ever gonna get tired of calling neurodivergent coded characters dumb or
y’all will see a character that has a short attention span, disorganized, seeks attention through making themselves the butt of jokes/”class clown” and be like wow what a dumb fucking stupid idiot bitch. how do they even tie their shoes in the morning. i bet they fucking faceplant into doors every day because they’re too dumb to know what a handle is.
look me in the eye and tell me sokka wouldn’t wear these
Here’s a concept that’s been living rent free in my mind for a month: Aizawa and Mic own a nursery and these are the kids that attend
“I think your girlfriend is taking care of it.”
Avatar: The Last Airbender - Book 3 Episodes 14 & 15 THE BOILING ROCK
Been experiencing two polar thoughts about this scene…
1. There is no way Sokka is expecting to win this battle. He is the one and only warrior left in the village, about to face down a Fire Nation ship all by himself. Sokka has been the epitome of bravery since the very beginning.
2. Sokka can’t draw worth shit, and yet he sure can perfectly apply war paint on himself without even so much as a mirror aksdflj
We all know that Sokka bears resemblance to his dad, but can we just take a moment to appreciate how much his mom looks so much like him in the flashback from the southern raiders?
It’s that concerned, reassuring, and yet somehow determined look. It’s one that only a true leader could bear. And this says a lot about Sokka’s own personality too as he develops into a leader and warrior throughout the show.

She’s pretty much a pain. She’s always got to be right about everything and she gets all bossy and involved and in your business. Yeah. I don’t know how you could deal with it. Actually, in a way, I rely on it.
Me: There’s no way Kaminari’s just a side character! Horikoshi draws him so beautifully!
Horikoshi:
you know what i just realised? that katara, telling sokka that he ‘didn’t love their mother like she did’ was after sokka lost yue.
like. her brother not only lost his mother and then had his father leave which made him overprotective and extremely fearful of losing people he cares about, but then he also fails to protect his first love after being appointed as her bodyguard which only makes him feel like more of a failure, to the point where he’s desperate and guilty enough to break hakoda and suki out of prison with no backup, because he believes the failure on the day of the eclipse is his fault.
apart from aang, sokka probably knows more about loss than anyone else on that show, not because he’s experienced a lot of it, but because he didn’t get angry at the people who killed them: he internalized it.
Plz watch this show thank-
Ah yes, Family of Choice, my biggest weakness.
Happy birthday, Shinsou!! You’re going to be a wonderful hero.
