obviously there is a lot of very loaded significance in the way that while katara tried to force herself into her mother’s role after kya’s sacrifice and sokka tried to force himself into his father’s role after hakoda & the other men left for war, katara actually grows up to take more after her father, both as a brave warrior who charges into battle (and as future chief *cough cough*), but also just physically resembling him more than sokka does, who actually looks very similar to kya, as well as taking on the mantle of sacrificial protector to katara, his tribe, and the gaang (it feels like no coincidence that the only thing we truly know about kya is also one of sokka’s defining characteristics). but also I just love the concept of katara taking after hakoda and sokka taking after kya physically-speaking, not only for the larger thematic ways in which this contributes to the subversion of gender roles, but because I think it would be very cool and fun if as sokka got older, he got taller but no more buff, like no matter what he will always just have the frame of a lanky nerd, and katara is the one with epic muscles, just like her dad <3
“bitter work” aka “angry local gays yell at god”
Sokka is the member of the Gaang that scares me the most because while Katara, Toph, and Aang are all extremely powerful and talented they all consistently trained with immense dedication and effort. Meanwhile Sokka learns fighting techniques in a matter of days. He's a skilled welder but this never comes up after a couple of episodes. He's instictually good at haikus??? He's a skilled inventor and scientist but I have no idea where LEARNED it in the first place. I imagine he grew up hunting and trying to defend his village. He fucking invented the submarine during the series. Sokka is TERRIFYING not because he's more powerful than any other member of the group but because he picks up skills so quickly. If he had the time consistent training and instruction he would too powerful
Me: There’s no way Kaminari’s just a side character! Horikoshi draws him so beautifully!
Horikoshi:
Despite all the relationships inside tmnt 2012 and the guys having their ways of interacting with each other (a lot of the time fighting), it wasn't an abusive household...
Yeah it was different to how they portrayed them in Rise and how they were brought up had a massive effect on that, but taking what they had and calling it abusive is a major exaggeration. 2012 has portrayed the love the family had for each on countless occasions but that gets shoved under the rug as soon as they wanna compare it to Rise.
Both iterations showed a great example of what it's like to have brothers, the good and the dirty stuff, but they both had just as many links to the other as well as the differences both shows have
Nah fam 2012 was abusive asdfhjk. No parent is perfect, but the was 2012 Splinter overtly favored Leo to the point where, after his death he only addressed Leo specifically when his other grieving sons were right there. He also never gave them the choice, he put them in a feud with a man he had beef with. He made them soldiers, and pushed specifically both Leo and Donnie to breaking points bc they were under such pressure to find and cure Splinter’s daughter all while Splinter sat back and barely joined the search.
All of this is a byproduct of poor writing but it was still compelling if u looked at it through the lenses of “this is what happens when u live in a toxic, abusive household”. And 2012 could have been successfully less frustrating if they would have just acknowledged that this was intentionally meant to portray a sucky family dynamic instead of trying to play it off as normal.
Ultimately 2012 Splinter fostered the tense and strained relationships between his kids, didnt really make the important decisions and left a majority of it on Leo- who then projected his stress onto his brothers, namely Donnie. Then 2012 Splinter knew his favortism was causing Raph a lot of anger and hurt, and did nothing but teach him how to channel that anger...instead of ya know, not favoring Leo to an extreme. He also never spoke to Mikey asfdghjkkl
And when Leo got beaten into a coma, Splinter convinced him his pain was all in his head to get him to recover quicker just to send him out to fight his battles again. He also taught them healing hands mad late and only taught it to Leo and not Donnie who...was the family medic at the time.
Like cmon this is abusive atp! Still interesting! But still abusive!
god with Sokka's whole quiet fear of losing someone else the way he lost Yue I can't even imagine how he must have been feeling when he watched Katara and Zuko go where he can't follow to face Azula, who literally killed Aang the last time Team Avatar fought her, and this time they don't have any spirit water
Sokka just stares at them for a bit before they leave and you can just tell he's trying so hard not to consider that he might not see them again
Sokka: Well, it’s time to move onto Plan 2. Aang: Plan B, you mean? Sokka: That would insinuate I have only twenty-six plans.
You know what?
I love that Sokka and Bolin are always clowning around. I know people think being the comedic relief character is a bad thing but do you know how much care and effort goes into making other people laugh?
Like putting aside your own hurts and fears and baggage to cheer up others is hard. Bolin and Sokka aren't as stupid as they act, they just play it up.
Making people laugh and smile in times of stress is hard because you have to shove all of your own stress aside and joke it up and smile and pretend its all going to be okay even when you don't feel it will.
Sometimes you've just got to let that built up energy out and it might as well come out as laughter.
Like pretending everything is fine and giving your humor to others? That's learned behavior.
No doubt Bolin and Sokka picked it up to make Mako and Katara feel better or less stressed. After all a joking and happy sibling is a safe and cared for one. Then they just extended it as their friend groups grew.
And don't get me started on when they slip up and drop the charade. Sometimes people are more concerned the comedy stopped over the character's emotions and that can lead to people overlooking their more emotion heavy moments for their funny ones.
Like comic relief characters are vital man, because who else will make you laugh when you really just want to cry?
