Code Refactored| Chapter 1

Chapter Title: Short fall, hard landing

Chapter Summary: Chell is alone and starving, and she’s desperate enough to poke around in long-abandoned buildings -- until one collapses beneath her feet and she falls into the depths of Aperture once more. Virgil is begrudgingly assigned to the task of assessing the damage afterwards and, finding the injured human, is hit with an idea: to use her to find his friend Mel. 

Fic Word Count: 3599

Fic Summary: Chell was free, left stranded and adrift in a sea of golden waving grass. She lost a friend named Wheatley and expected him to float in space forever. Virgil was trapped, subject to the orders given by the Central Core. He lost a friend named Mel and hoped to see her alive, soon.

Chell is tenacious, having learned never to trust a core, even if they are friendly. Virgil is snarky and sarcastic, but has seen first hand what a human can do.

Chell and Virgil make a deal, and for such an innocuous decision, the secrets they would discover would be Earth-shattering.

I don't actually own any animation software, so this was all done in Unity using a combination of 2D rigging (pearls, iterator body) and using basic C# code to script in certain effects (the spinning halo). I was careful to make everything loop on the 2-second mark, and then opened a running window of my "game," screen-recorded it, cropped the boundaries of the screen recording, and then converted a 2-second slice to a gif.

Story idea: The most wanted woman in town has announced that she’ll only marry the one who can open her front door with the key around her cat’s neck. Many men try to hunt the cat down, chase and trap it, but to no avail, the cat is simply too quick, smart and clever, and always finds a way to evade and avoid them.

 You are the first one to figure out the obvious: Do not chase the cat. The cat is befriendable. Get the cat to trust you, to genuinely enjoy your company, and you can hang out with the cat. You may eventually be allowed to touch the cat. The cat will freely let you take the key.

 Secondary plot twist: The woman is a shapeshifter. She is the cat.

I started off just wanting to draw Chris wearing fledgling wings (as in, the item), and then decided to give Andrew and Malik just straight-up bird wings for fun.

Nothing here is colored, but I imagine Malik’s wings to be black like crow feathers. A sort of combination of his general shadiness and wits.

Andrew has phoenix wings. He vehemently denies this and claims they’re cardinal feathers. (The tips of his feathers are jagged and black, almost like they’ve been charred. He, again, ignores this.)

Wheatley's character is so fucking funny. Like if you look at his character as a whole, all the comments about "they told me if I did this I'd die," his complete desperation for control and power even when it is blatantly obvious he does not have the ability to wield it, that is genuinely fascinating. Wheatley is a genuinely interesting, compelling character. but also his entire character is

So I purposefully skipped yesterday because i wanted Sun and Moon to go together. I wanted to do something where they could stack and look like they were eclipsing each other but i don’t know if I pulled it off really well. At least the independent versions of the two turned out okay….This is a concept i may revisit at some point later but otherwise I’m satisfied for now.
