YES! When I say I SOBBED at the end. Such a well-written character arc, and I'd admittedly love to know more about her backstory.

***Iron Flame SPOILERS****

I am so incredibly disappointed with what everyone is choosing to talk about with this book. Everyone is concentrating on what happens with Xaden but you know what to me was the absolute most gut wrenching storyline in the whole book? General Lilith Fucking Sorrengail.

From the moment we see her again in the beginning of the book she is nothing but supportive and proud of her daughter. Yes, she absolutely made the wrong decision where she stands in the war, and what she did to Xaden was absolutely inexcusable. (Although I do think if she hadn’t done that they would have killed all the marked ones.) But she made all those decisions for her children. Because she did what she needed to to keep them safe. You can’t convince me that even after Violet leaves, that even after Mira leaves, that she wasn’t incredibly thankful for the fact they were together and with Xaden who would never let something happen to Violet.

Lilith went into the dungeons to get her daughter out of there and I am not unconvinced that had Violet not already been mid rescue the General wouldn’t have turned traitor right there to get her out. The scene when Brennen reveals himself to her?? She’s cracking and can hardly hold herself together and my heart felt so sorry for her in that moment. It made me mad at Brennan because he threw it in her face like ammo when Violet spent all of fourth wing describing how his death ruined their mother.

One of the most heart breaking quotes in the whole book is at the beginning of chapter 65:

“Most generals dream of dying in service to their kingdom. But you know me better than that, my love. When I fall, it will be for one reason only: to protect our children.”

General Sorrengail didn’t support the war, she didn’t fight for Navarre she made it clear fron the beginning that she was just a mom protecting her kids, and she did so without second thought. Without hesitation. She didn’t do what she did for the war effort, or even to help everyone on the battlefield. She did it for Brennen, and Violet, and Mira.

Lilith Sorrengail was just a desperate mother and everyone glossing over her sacrifice is bullshit.

It's complete and it is GLORIOUS. I have read it twice - once while in progress and once as a full read. And oh my goodness. It's just. Agh. I love it.

Character Development Qs

I'm writing a character who thinks her partner is cheating. I'm trying to come up with the list of reasons one would think their partner is cheating.

The usual suspects outside of straight up seeing them out with another person or messages or full-on evidence, kind of eludes me.

Some people I know say their partners acted completely differently (colder, crueler, etc.). Some say they were extra nice. I understand it might be different across the board, but I just want some real-world ideas behind this.

I apologize if this upsets anyone, but how did you/your friend/family, etc. KNOW? What tipped you/them off?

@tlaquetzqui thank you so much! This is spectacular. I've been looking for days trying to work out what rank he'd be in - my initial thought was Pilot Officer, which I think might still be right. Such a shame, as Squadron Leader felt more fitting, but he'd be too young, even in wartime. I don't necessarily need the historical accuracy, but I want it to at least make sense to anyone reading it, you know?

My MMC is 25, my FMC is 23 - I'm also looking at the roles she would have played during the war, though I'm kind of looking more into the Night Witches sort of arena for that.

Thank you so much again - clearing up some very confusing and vague aspects of my research here! :)

Help! I can't work out my character's Royal Air Force ranking. I'm looking online but it doesn't make it clear what age bracket you'd fall in to be these roles, especially in WWII...?

Does anyone know or have any resources they found particularly helpful?

Latest Sketch-a-Wish Voted On By My Lovely Patreon Members For September, Featuring Elspeth And Ravyn

Latest Sketch-a-Wish voted on by my lovely Patreon members for September, featuring Elspeth and Ravyn from ONE DARK WINDOW by Rachel Gillig! I don't know about you all, but I got Pride vibes (from Full Metal Alchemist) with The Nightmare and so paid a little homage to that here. I know functionally it would be more like Greed/Ling, but the patient and lethal personality reminded me of Pride.

I notice his hands.

After so many years together, I thought they would have changed. I thought they would be stronger, show the years of hard work we've put in to this life we've created.

But they're soft, calloused only from the bar at the gym.

They don't show the effort.

They don't show the strain.

Is that because mine are the only ones putting in the work?

Is that because mine are the only ones gripping the tools, breaking apart the wood, ripping down the walls?

Did I make a mistake when I chose this man?

Did I not look closely enough at the details?

I have forgiven hurts so deeply carved, transgressions no other woman would allow, and now...

Now, I notice his hands.

I look at mine, scarred and marked from the backbreaking work of building our home, our life.

I look at his - as perfect as the day we met - not a blemish to be found.

And I wonder.

I notice his hands.
