⚠️This is NOT a drill ⚠️
Monterey bay aquarium has released a 1 hour megamix of skeleton shrimp headbanging to metal music and it’s SICK as FUCK ‼️
This will never NOT be funny
thinking about that one au I made back in sept 2024 where mo’at adopts spider (part 1 here)
NOW I’m thinking of the sully kids’ roles here… been being torn between caring and play-insulting his friend or.. respecting his uncle????????? And TRUST Kiri is definitely abusing the uncle privileges now.
Jake: where the hell were you? You were gone for the entire day— kiri: I was out— Jake: since dawn?! Kiri: well, I was with uncle spider, you said to bring a trustworthy elder with you! Jake: I meant people like Norm! Or Max! Kiri: *blows raspberries whilst walking away*
SPIDER is using his “respect your elders/ uncle” card EVERYTIME on lo’ak whenever possible. He wouldn’t do that to tuk, though. Also finds it funny with neteyam confused on either calling him uncle spider or spider???
now that I think of it more.. more family gatherings of Mo’at, Spider, and Neytiri. Someone (I don’t remember and I can’t find their repost) said that it would be hard for neytiri to get used to it since now she’s the elder sister, and not the youngest baby.. and I think YES.
it’d be hard for neytiri to get used to it— maybe it even strains their already fragile relationship MORE but sometimes big sister instincts set in. At some point she starts… big sistering spider.
I’m imagining a family dinner with the sullies + Mo’at and spider where they all are eating together, and neytiri notices spiders smaller bowl.
Mo’at, having gotten used to the smaller portions the boy always took always accepted it since Sky people have notoriously smaller stomachs than them. Neytiri, who most of her time catering to her family and not spending as much as she used to with her mother and spider is … odded out.
spider had always eaten with them, not always ofcourse, just the average once in awhile. And it was only for a short time as he never overstayed his welcome and she never really cared to see how much he was really eating. But now? After months of family bonding days brought on by mo’at (which was always painfully awkward between spider and neytiri)? Yeah, that isn’t gonna slide. That’s too little.
she rips off a bit of the meat from her bowl and throws it into spiders.
Jake freezes, wondering if he accidentally sniffed some pandoran weed in the air or is actually seeing what he’s seeing. Spider also freezes but quickly goes back to eating after glancing up to an unbothered Neytiri too busy digging into her own food. Mo’at simply smiles from where she sits. The rest of the sully children just view it as an average dinner.
so for Avatar fans who don't already know, Kelutral's "Omaticon" online convention (streamed on their Twitch channel) is going on this weekend, and the kickoff panel earlier this evening featured franchise loremaster Josh Izzo.
Some may remember this little panel in the High Ground, featuring Norm with a Na'vi child addressing him as "Daddy":
In the Visual Dictionary, there's also a very brief mention that Tuk has a best friend named Popiti.
...so here's the fun bit:
Apparently Popiti also has a sibling, and her mother/Norm's mate is from the Olangi clan (which makes sense given that the Visual Dictionary mentions Norm having a bunch of Olangi trinkets).
ngl I love this lore drop but now I have so many more questions also!! How old is Popiti (I assume close to Tuk's age since they're best friends but there's still some wiggle room there so)? Is her sibling older or younger and what's his/her name? If they're Norm's biological kids, do either of them have avatar features like Kiri and Lo'ak? What's Norm's wife's name, what's their story? Norm didn't get his consciousness permanently transferred like Jake did, so how does him switching between two bodies affect things? PLZ I NEED TO KNOW
@theoptimistictabby thought you'd be interested in this one ;)
btw let it be known that I speculated all these things like two years ago, my mind is still reeling that what I thought was merely wild wishful-thinking speculation at the time turned out to be CANON lol
Can you write a snippet of Quaritch following through with his version of “an old school ass whipping”
Nothing too serious because I don’t think he’d abuse Spider but I do think he’d be the type of parent to resort to physical discipline if pushed enough.
In the exchange between him and Spider, Spider does not seemed alarmed with fear and is actually a little cheeky. I think he’s used to adults just letting him get away with things.
I think it’s be interesting to read Spider’s reaction to an adult/authority figure disciplining him (whether physical or some other punishment) for not following instructions rather than just checking to see if he has not been harmed.
It doesn’t have to relate to him running off which is where Quaritch uses the threat. It could be anything.
Wish granted!✨

“UGH! Did y’all ever even wash these before??”
“Not since they were put here.” Miles responded nonchalantly, reading the latest report off his holotable as he lay in the bunk opposite of the shower entrance.
“This is disgusting.” Spider grimaced, his back aching from labour.
It must have been about seven hours since the dreadful words of an incoming punishment were spoken, yet it felt more like an eternity as Spider was been tasked to clean the floor of every room in the recom barracks with only a rag and soap. If hell existed — this had to be it.
“How…” The boy breathed, letting his arms rest minutely, slumped on the foamy tiles. For once, he was thankful to be forced into an ugly shirt and camo-pants. “How much do I have left?”
“A lot less if you didn’t yap all the time.” Miles, yet again, responded without giving his son prisoner as much as a look.
“No, seriously. How many rooms?”
The recom let out a heavy sigh, as if he was the one hunched over the tiles with rubber gloves. “Five. You’ll do toilets next.”
Spider groaned in misery, before taking a deep breath to steady himself and keep working. Maybe Miles would eventually get tired of seeing him like this and let it go.
“Oh, and don’t think I’ll let you off easy. You’ll be scrubbing these floors until you’re done with them all. No breaks.”
Socorro snapped his head towards him. “Are you crazy!? These are avatar-sized! The place is big as fuck! I’ll be stuck here until morning!”
“Then you’ll have to quit talking and get back go work.”
Spider growled. “This is child abuse.”
“You wanna take me to court?”
The blonde’s growls turned to a hiss as he got back to the task, fuming. What the hell was this old bastard’s deal?
“All this…” Spider grumbled as he slid the soapy rag over the floor. “Just for me calling you an asshole…”
“Oh no.” Miles snapped, his keen ears catching Socorro’s low mumbling form across the room. “All this is for you saying that shit in front of my superiors. You crossed a line. I could let your attitude slide in the forest, but not in public. You will not put me in a spot like that again. Got that?”
“Yes sir.”
“No you didn’t. Keep scrubbing.” Miles commanded, going back to reading. “How in lord’s name did those lab rats even tolerate you?”
With no warning, these last words hit Spider like an arrow to the chest. Out of nowhere, he got a strong urge to take that damned rag and strangle the colonel with it. “I was very well-fucking-behaved, thank you.” He spat.
“You? Behaving?” Quaritch smirked, raising a brow. “Nonsense.”
“You think you know me? That you got me all figured out?”
“You’re not as mysterious as you wanna be, kid.” The recom side-eyed him. “You’re an audacious, lazy brat who was never taught manners because those traitors had no patience to raise a proper man.”
Spider laughed in disbelief. “Oh. Really?”
“I didn’t say you could stop. Quit whining, or I’ll assign the B-squad’s barracks as well.”
“Wh-NO!” The boy barked, standing and throwing the wet rag in the bucket. “We’re NOT done!”
Miles rolled his eyes. On some level, he could feel that this outburst was coming, but held out hope that they’d skip Spider’s desperate self-affirmations. He’ll let him talk it out and add onto the punishment after the rant is over, which was the only reason why he didn’t plan on tunning the kid out.
No other reason at all.
“You think I’m like this at home? I’m not! I worked day in an out at hell’s gate and then high camp, to help those I care about and keep hem safe!” He raised his voice. “I’ve always tried to be quiet, stay out of the way, keep to myself! The rest of those ankle-biters didn’t come close!” He stepped closer to the stone-faced colonel. “I’ve always did my best, alright?!”
His voice wavered, and Quaritch’s ears flicked down instinctively. Was the kid getting emotional? “If you were so damn good then why the hell had no-one scrambled to get you back yet?”
His implication hung in the air, simple and clear; that it was Spider’s fault that there was yet not a single rescue attempt made.
Another arrow to the heart.
“You know why.” Socorro spat.
“No I don’t. We’ve spent so much time squatting in the mud miles from Bridgehead yet no one has come looking fo you.”
Spider’s breath hitched.
“Maybe, get this…” Quaritch stood. “You’d be favoured more if you were less of a pain in the ass.”
Of course, the recom did not believe his words. Not fully, but he needed to deliver the punishment in a way his ward would remember. Spider was overdue for a reality check.
Except…the cheer pain in Socorro’s eyes in response to his words suggested otherwise. Quaritch was suddenly rooted in place, pinned under his gaze.
“How…how dare you.” He spoke, his voice shaking. “I was good. I did all I could and then more.” Water began pooling in his big eyes. “I did everything. I was useful, convenient, invisible!” His hands balled into fists. “I did everything they asked! I was at their beck and call! Always!”
Miles felt his heart sink with every sentence. Shit. Alright. Perhaps he overdid it with the cutting words.
“I never complained! I learned to treat my own cuts and bruises! Learned to power through the broken bones! I’ve never been a burden!!!” He screamed.
After weeks, months of staying tight-lipped about his past, all this new information threw Miles’s mind into a spin.
“Spider—”
“You wanna know why I called you an asshole in front of those corporates!? Because you’re a fucking monster!!!” But Socorro could not longer be stopped. “You threaten and hurt and kill and it never bothers you, so why the FUCK should I respect you!?!” He sniffed, throwing off his gloves. “All you’ve ever done is screw me over! It’s YOUR fault no one cared how good I was or that I’m gone, because I’ll always carry YOUR blood. FUCK YOU!” He roared, before sobbing and storming out of the barracks, leaving Miles to stew in what he had just heard.
He looked at the wet rag lying on the tiles, the silence deafening and his tail limp.
Damn it.
Why did his heart ache so?
For some reason I never considered that looms could be small and projects could be accessible ?? How did you get started weaving and what resources did you use?? I saw some of the work you’ve made and I want to get started learning so badly!! Help!
Yess! Weaving is great because of how accessible it can be!! Something I also only recently realized!
I've been enamored with weaving ever since 6 year old me saw an enormous floor loom in action at a textile museum. Despite my fascination with textiles, it still took 20ish years before I picked up weaving as a hobby. Looms were pricy, big, and complicated. It wasn't until I came across bandweaving that it really felt like something I could casually pick up without committing to spending a ton of time and money. I started with tablet weaving, but have since switched to weaving with a heddle. I've been learning by referencing books, looking up weaving process videos, and a lot of trial, error, and experimentation.
Here's a list of resources for two very accessible types of weaving that don't need a loom:
Tablets can be bought, but are also easy to make at home from a deck of cards, cereal boxes, recycled plastic, etc. You can find a tutorial for creating your own here.
Tablets at Work by Claudia Wollny An incredibly comprehensive book featuring 22 tablet weaving techniques. The book is written in German and English. Highly recommend for the very enthusiastic.
Card Weaving by Candace Crockett The book that got me started. Easy to follow, informative, and much cheaper and easier to find than Tablets at Work.
Elewys of Finchingefeld A great youtube channel for historic tablet weaving.
Rigid heddles can be bought or laser cut, and string heddles are created at home out of yarn/string. They are similar, but offer different advantages. Rigid heddles can be simpler to work with, especially if you're working with multiple sheds. String heddles require a few more steps to open the down shed, but don't distort the width of your warp threads. This allows you to weave further down your warp, and makes it easier to keep an even band width.
Here is tutorial for creating your own string heddles.
Norwegian Pick-Up Bandweaving by Heather Torgenrud The book that I learned from! Focuses on pick-up weaving, but is a good introduction to bandweaving in general.
Durham Weaver has a blog and youtube channel. They tend to focus on Scandinavian style weaving, and feature content on weaving with a double slotted heddle, as well as how to set up your warp.
Backstrap Weaving by Laverne Waddington is a blog packed with information about weaving with string heddles. They tend to focus on Latin American style weaving.
A Spinner Weaver is a blog about inkle weaving, though the techniques can be done off of a loom as well. Inkle looms are among the cheaper looms and are designed for bandweaving.
