video game fan art day

Yesterday Jimmy Giegerich and I decided to make "video game fan art day" happen, and these are some of the quick little drawings that resulted on my part.  Here are Frog from Chrono Trigger (always in my team) including a little one of him croaking, Alucard from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and of course: Solid Snake. It's been so long!  I've missed you all!  Sorry about the lack of posts.  Lately inspiration has been a little bit scarce, but I thought I'd jump back on the horse with a new kaiju painting!  This is Agasukeron, one of my favorites.  These colors aren't exactly true to form as far as the figure goes, but I do love some pink every now and then.

Here's a tip: don't paint with gouache on top of reg'lar old acrylic without some sort of matte medium between the two!  For some reason my brain turned off and I thought I'd save some gouache by painting the background here in acrylic.  Mistake!  Ended up using more gouache to keep my colors solid and even.  So don't be a noob like me: all gouache, combo gouache and acrylic gouache, or make that acrylic a decent surface to paint on.

The Vodyanoi is a sort of water demon from Russian folklore, sometimes called the Father of Mermaids, who, when angered, causes floods, breaks dams, and drowns people, dragging them underwater to serve him forever. Victims of drowning were not buried at Orthodox cemeteries, as by taking the souls of his victims away from him, the Vodyanoi would become angry, causing drought or hail in retribution.

I created my own interpretation of the Vodyanoi for Seventh Church Ministries, a small press publisher who is producing limited-edition prints of this in conjunction with their release of Jeanne D’Angelo’s upcoming zine “Unclean Spirits.” Prints will be available September 25th.

My man Jimmy is putting together a zine called Bits & Multiples of 8 for video game fan art from the original Nintendo system to Nintendo 64 (Sega + Playstation included), and he's just put out a call for submissions on his blog! The cover features characters from tons of games (see if you can name them all) and will make a lovely 4-color screen print on a lovely zine full of lovely work. Check it out! It'll be rad.
