Not everyone has the privilege to study as openly as they would like. Maybe your parents are against witchcraft. Maybe your roommates or the person you rent from are too ignorant to explain the craft to. If that is the case, here are a couple tricks so you don’t have to halt your practice.
Mint Tin Altars- Altoids and other mints come in small, deck of card sized tins, that you can fit a surprising amount into. Small crystals or crystal chips (which often can be found for less than $1 at most new age shops). Keep a tarot card at the bottom (drawn is fine), think of this as an altar cloth. You can also keep sigils, small cone incense (which can be burned safely on the metal tin!), and herbs.
These can be hidden pretty much anywhere. In dressers, closet, purse, backpack, or almost anywhere. You can also do these things in a shoebox, pencil box, or makeup box if you have/want the space.
Online Grimoire- Make a blog for your grimoire! Or use google docs for notes. There are lots of places you can do your note taking and book of shadow making all online so no one asks questions! I have a specific sideblog here on tumblr that is for all of my Book Of Shadow things. Tags keep things organized too!
Apps- #Selfcare is an app that helps you do self care right on your phone. It doesn’t give you “goals” or pesky reminders that make the self care feel like more of a chore, it’s simply there when you need it, to give you an escape. The app uses a lot of witchy things in it though, like crystals, tarot cards, altars, and more. It’s a great place to have a bunch of small daily rituals all on your phone! (I swear this isn’t an ad I know it looks like one)
You can also find many apps for tarot, moon phases, candles, etc. Many people like to keep all of their recourses on their phone or tablet. These people are usually known as cyber witches
Kitchen Herbs- Find out what herbs you have in your kitchen that you can use without anyone noticing. Most herbs use in spells can be swapped out for things you have around the house. (Examples include cinnamon, nutmeg, basil, bay leaves, rosemary, or thyme)
Other Kitchen Magic- Often kitchen magic is pretty easy to cover up. Stirring drinks with intention (Clockwise for manifesting, counterclockwise for banishing), as well as simply mixing certain herbs together in good. Making Tea a ritual in your life is a great way to have a secret moment in your craft
Okay witches, this is just a small list, and there are countless ways to study your craft, but for people who may be limited, or need to keep things hidden this may be a place to start! (As well as spoonies, people who travel, and people who just don’t have the space!)

Hanging rosemary above the doorstep, and/or above doors of the house for protection.
Sprinkling a line of dried red pepper on a windowsill, to counter a curse.
Placing a mix of dried & ground eggshells and black pepper in every corner of a room to keep out unwanted spirits.
Placing a decoration representing a witch in the kitchen, to keep away illness and to favor health.
Crafting an effigie (no matter how crude!) and make it into the guardian of your home by charging it with your intent of protection and placing it near the front door.
Crafting small witch ladders to hang around the house.
Inspired by and incorporates an old Irish curse
“May those who love us, love us, And those who don’t, May [God] turn their hearts And if not their hearts, may [he] turn their ankles so we’ll know them by their limping”
Inventory: - salt - lemon juice - black pepper - red pepper - 2 paper - red marker - black string - tinted, dark bottle - sigil form of the curse
To Do:
Draw curse sigil on paper with red marker. Recite curse throughout spell, inserting the name of your own god if wanted. Fold sigil up tight as it will go, then unfold once into a bowl/crevice shape. Place paper into a bowl of salt. Sprinkle black and red pepper into paper. Burn sigil paper down to ash, still reciting curse. Once paper is burned, pour salt and every single piece of the paper into bottle. Prepare second piece of paper by lightly soaking in lemon juice until slightly moldable. Form paper into a cap for the bottle and tie down paper with string. Place in a hidden, dark place in a room that people pass through often. Turn in a counterclockwise circle once a week.
Cleanse your work area thoroughly after you’ve hidden the bottle.
Hello! I’m excited for the beginning of another year and I will be celebrating the special day with a few simple spells. You can do these without the knowledge of others that may be around you. All chants can be done without the spoken word. I hope you all have an amazing new years and I can’t wait to make more memories with all of you. Thank you for everything!
Sparkler Spell - This spell if for making a resolution clear and reachable. I have a goal in mind and I want to stick with it, so I perform this simple spell. As you light the sparkler, recite either out loud or in your mind your goal in the form “I will succeed through my own will. I gather determination and resilience to complete _____.” Then you can either use a sigil, sign your name, or use any motion that represents a promise. Make sure you have clear intentions and know what your goal is. This isn’t a spell to help find a goal for you, but instead to give you strength to complete the resolution you have already come up with.
Champaign/Cider Spell - This just a little bubble spell that I use. It is very simple and I like to throw in a few pieces of fruit, but y'all don’t need to do that. I just chant a few soothing words and encouragements into the glass both as a pour the drink and put the pieces of fruit in. I go with just telling myself I did a great job and that I worked really hard. That sometimes things got tough, but I overcame those struggles and I’ll make it through this next year. Very simple and easy. It really puts me in a good mind for the new year.
Popper Spell - I’m not sure everyone can do this, but if you have those firework things where you throw them on the ground and they pop…those are what I’m talking about. ***Also if you do this please please please remember to pick up those left over and not just leave them on the ground for an animal to eat.*** I use these to ward and warn previous negative energy and incoming negatives that this body and mind will not be up for grabs. I pop them in a circle around me and each one I throw I tell something to stay away. For example, “Leave out my anxiety.” or “No more paranoia.” This gives me a feeling of protection and strength. The action of throwing gives me power and the sound from the popper shows a physical reaction. This helps me a lot.
I hope theses simple spells can be of some use! None of theses require too much and are really easy to do if you are a closet witch. I find the coming of New Years to be hectic and I need fast spells that I can do surrounded by people. These really get my mind and body ready for the new year.
Happy New Year!
