"you're okay. i promise you're okay."
"it's not your fault. it's not your fault."

"you seem in dire need of cookies."
"oh, honey, come here." (hugging) "it's okay to be vulnerable, okay?"

"can't sleep?"
"are you sick? no, no, you're staying home. i'll make you soup and put on a disney movie you're not going anywhere like that."
"have you eaten?"
"i love you as much as my children, and no one hurts my children."
"nightmares?"
"you don't have to do anything, just rest. please."
"you're going to hurt yourself. take a break."

How Jinx ends up in braids
WORDCOUNT: 2.1K, SERIES ON AO3: LINK HERE
Okay, blog regulars, I promise this will be the last bit of father Silco content we'll see...we'll get Wedding Bells part three out and read Lalo going feral over...everything of Princesa, but this is how I cope with Arcane season two okay???
"The kid sees things, Silco. I know she ain't ever been...the way kids should be since we took her in but -" Sevika looks to the cigar between her strong-welded fingers. "She sees things. And she talks to whatever she sees. That's not right. If you're really, actually thinking of putting that tween's hobby of exploding everything in her sights within our line of business...that could, I don't know, affect said line of business. You know it."Â
Silco does not sigh nor move, really. He does not stare at Sevika in her confrontation. He takes another inhale of his own cigar. The man gave one to his guard twenty minutes ago when she stepped in to relay the dealings and their issues today.Â
He offered, and she was hesitant to accept, considering he'd never offered anyone a cigar of his own before, and it felt too...far away from professionalism. But Sevika took it from Silco and has been smoking since then. He can tell it's not her cup of tea. He assumes her true enjoyments lie in paid women and a stinging whiskey.Â
âSilco.âÂ
Silco thinks these things because he doesn't want to think of Sevika being right about Jinx. She is. It's been a few years since her first true outburst when she was an ill little girl before she accepted Jinx - when she was little Powder. Her tendencies to whisper to herself (but not to her) and mutter in manic laughter where there's no humor has been growing ever since. Silco hasn't done much to not normalize the issue.Â
In turn, Jinx hasn't put much effort into hiding her tendencies, as if it's not an issue at all.Â
With every wide-eyed look and growing hand in his, Silco finds himself agreeing. It hasn't been so much of a burden on her, obviously. Jinx does not come crying to him, asking for his help in getting rid of these hallucinations. She still comes to him for her nightmares, though. And if his methods of helping her during those nights of nightmares are any clue to what he'll do with Jinx's hallucinations...well, then. He'll do nothing at all. Nothing but soothe her over until they come again .Â
"You can't stop a bad dream. I can't stop a bad dream, but I'll always be there after. Here for you. That's how our world works."Â
It's not an act of neglect . It's an act of selfishness. How would she come to him if he fixes her terrors? What will he do then?
"What am I to do, Sevika?" Silco blows his puff, a ring of smoke floating up into the air. "Smack her blind? That way, she won't see whatever she sees anymore?" That would be how the woman would have it.Â
"...Yeah? You'd have to take out her ears too, she hears what she sees. Listen, Silco. You're saying she'll be ready soon to be out with us. In a year or so...what if this is not fixed? What if she has...a what? What'd you call it, an episode? What if they happen in the field and she gets us all killed?"
Silco nearly twirls his cigar between the skin of fingers.Â
âYou already act as a moderator with our crew, donât you? Itâd simply be your job to make sure that doesnât happenâŠand you give that girl no credit, Sevika. None. Sheâs stronger than you think. Smarter. If you would let up on her, youâd know that.âÂ
Sevika stands, coming over to use Silcoâs doodled ashtray.Â
âAlright. I can handle how Powder hates me, I could handle the shit sheâs bound to put us through the minute she steps outside The Last Drop. But then she has her episode out there and doesnât even think to get out of a bulletâs way. Then what? She doesnât even attempt to fight a rival taking her away to do Janna knows what-âÂ
Silco, the side of him against the desk, slams his cigared fist down. Ash flies.Â
âThat will not happen.â
Itâs not logic on his tongue, even he knows that. But the man couldnât possibly care. His eyes shift off to the side, looking up at his everything colleague thin-mouthed.Â
â...Cause Iâll make sure? Or youâre too busy thinking like a father to think right?âÂ
Silco presses his ring, middle, and pointer finger against the middle of his brow before he stands. He puts out his cigar in the ashtray.Â
âBecause youâre talking about Powder. Iâm talking about Jinx.âÂ
Sevika stares before she nods. Silco thinks he could imagine her scoffing right here.Â
âRight. Weâre still calling her that. Itâs a little too on the nose. But Iâll go with what you decide, and if that decision ends in her getting us all killed or getting herself killed or worse, then-âÂ
Janna, let him find some fucking quiet without being reminded that Jinx can leave him.Â
âIâll talk to her. Iâll confront her as youâve confronted me. Will that suffice or will you continue with this incessant need, this near desire to imagine the girl dead?âÂ
Sevika turns, going to leave. Thankfully. They agree and work with each other much better without the mention of Jinx. But of course, thereâs always one last thing to be said.Â
âI donât want her dead, Silco. Not now, maybe give it another three years of her and sure, but I donât want her dead. Thatâs why Iâm talking about this now. But shit, with my luck, sheâll trip over those bunch of strings she refuses to cut and fall onto one of her bombs. Will I still have a job, then?âÂ
Silco looks to the ashtray. He presses a finger there.Â
âSheâs quick on her feet, that wonât happen.âÂ
With her back to him, the man doesnât see Sevika hold in a laugh of no humor. She leaves. He sits back in his chair.Â
Itâs a position that lasts seven seconds. He gets back up. Itâll be a talk heâs on his toes for. Silco has no interest in putting Jinx in a place where she thinks her mind exists wrong. It does not. It never could, even if it burdens Sevika. Even if it burdens herself.
Even him, on occasion - but burden does not outdo perfection, especially when it all falls on him to take care of her, to let his child grow into him, a relationship neither of them could run away from.Â
Before heâs able to enter Jinxâs hideout, Silcoâs already treated to frustrated groans and belty-shouting.Â
âWhy are you doing this to me?!â
Would this be what Sevika calls an episode? Silco thinks so until he enters. He slows in his steps. Â
Jinxâs attempting to put her thick, blue hair into buns. She fails. Again and again. This time, the person sheâs talking to is truly herself. Or her hair.Â
Silco tilts his head.Â
âWhere did I put the CLIP?? DAMN IT!âÂ
The girl, nearly twelve, lies on her stomach, legs kicking in pale-child anger. She groans into a mirror sheâs managed to keep upright on the floor.
âHow did she do this??âÂ
Jinxâs face falls into the floor. She throws a bomb off the plank. Down it goes into a puff of smoke. Silco almost feels itâs right to smile. He takes soft steps closer.Â
âJinx, what is wrong?âÂ
âIâm gonna throw myself off, Silco. Iâm gonna. Throw. Myself. Off!âÂ
Every word is said with each harsh brush through her hair. Itâs his old brush he gave to Jinx three months after he took her in. He realized she would, at some point, need to brush her hair. Sometimes heâd do it for her. Not so much anymore. He wouldnât mind if that changed. It takes no time out of his day, and he gets to hear her say the funniest things that can even break a laugh in him. Only sometimes, though.Â
âYou wanted to grow out your hair, a harsh maintenance is eventual.âÂ
Jinx pffts. âI need you to make senseeeeee, please. Literally means actually, right?âÂ
âYes.âÂ
âIâm-â His girl mms , face smushing back into the floor. âImma hafta lit-er-ally die if you donât make sense. Nothing is making sense! This brush is supposed to go through my hair! It always does.âÂ
Silco puts his hands behind his back, he finds his way to her little, tantrum-filled body on the floor. His head lowers.Â
Heâs forgotten what heâs come to do.Â
âWell, you have to brush it every day for that to happen. Have you been brushing it every day?âÂ
She hasnât. By all the tangles heâs been noticing for the past week, she most definitely hasnât touched that brush until now.Â
Jinx sits up, back slumped. She turns to him, but she doesnât look up. â...No.âÂ
âThereâs your issue. And now that you have long hair, you canât get away with skipping days any more.â He kneels.Â
He goes to sit fully, legs crossed.Â
âGive it to me. Turn back around.âÂ
Silco catches Jinxâs eye roll before she turns her back to him. She hands the brush over her head, when he grabs it, heâs already at work in the mess of her hair.Â
âOW! Silco!âÂ
Itâs all tangles in the blue. Her hair is nearly down to her waist and Silco is sure sheâll let it grow further. He wonât stop her. Itâs all hers.Â
âWhen I promised no harm would come to you with me, I excluded this.â He nearly grunts on a particularly hard knot to comb through. âKeep still! Before I scalp you.âÂ
âUGHHHERHRHHEHHERRUGH!âÂ
âDid that help?âÂ
Itâs a beat of silence.Â
â...I donât know.âÂ
Silco doesnât stop. He doesnât know how long theyâre there - but it's the groans of a restless child and his focus on blue threads of hair until itâs smooth, untangled. Perfect on that head of hers. He runs his fingers through.Â
âThere. Perfect.âÂ
And he runs his fingers through, thinking. Wading in his thoughts.Â
âAlright, thanks! Now itâll be easier for me to hide things in the-âÂ
Jinx goes to run off, but he takes her by the shoulders when his thought is finished. When itâs resulted in an idea.Â
âSit back down, child.âÂ
Jinx groans out, head falling back when her hold body does. âWhaaaaaaaat?? I said thank you! Here!â Â
She throws her back into his chest, staying there for a long, restless moment.Â
âBack-hug!âÂ
âWeâll give you braids. Itâs a protective hairstyle.âÂ
âWhat?âÂ
He pushes the girl to sit off of him, already separating her hair into two bunches. âDo not pretend that you donât know what braids are, Jinx. I donât know how youâd make a bit out of that.âÂ
âNo, how can hair be protective?â Â
âHair can be protective. And expressive.âÂ
And there, Silco begins to braid. Itâs easy, and he will not think of how confronting her with her head and everything in it would protect her, cause itâd be separating those parts from Jinx. He wants to separate nothing. Itâs as simple as that.Â
âHair is hair. Silco.âÂ
âThen youâll let me shave all of yours off, hm?âÂ
Jinx is silent after that - just until he moves onto the next braid. He barely thinks of his memories, and whether or not he should relay them.Â
âMy hair wasnât always this short. I had it longer. Not like you, but I couldâve braided it if I wanted to. At my age, itâs easier to maintain what I have now. Not that Iâm old like you say.âÂ
Itâs another beat of silenceâŠ
Then a breaking of giggles. Silco can feel them with every brush.Â
âWhat?âÂ
âI see a braided Silco! I canât-â She giggles so brightly. His lips thin, curve. âThatâs so funny! You need to put your hair into pigtails. Right NOW!âÂ
And there. Heâs finished.Â
âThere. This will hold you over, because I know you wonât remember to brush it every day.âÂ
He puts the braids over Jinxâs shoulders. Through the mirror, heâs able to see her face soften and study them as she patters her fingers over.Â
âDo they work?âÂ
â...Yeah.âÂ
Silco smiles. He kisses the back of her head. There, he remembers, but he only has one thing to say.Â
âYou see a lot of things. And all of them are real, one way or another. Yes?âÂ
The girl doesnât say anything at that, she only falls back into his lap. Sheâs curled, back against his chest.Â
âHow mad would you be if you woke up to pigtails tomorrow?âÂ
Itâs a genuine question thatâs asked so innocently. Silco sighs.Â
âI donât waste my anger on things I canât control.âÂ
âGood.â
