I am realizing that I’ve been obsessed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer for more than a month now but I haven’t put anything on my main blog from it yet, so it’s time to remedy that :)
There is something so tragic and darkly beautiful about Spike and Drusilla’s relationship... I quite like the light this quote casts on Spike’s turning, how he was a poet out looking for his ideal of love, and in her own way, Drusilla was looking for her ideal of love too, but neither of them got quite what they expected--and yet they also sort of did, oddly? In a twisted sense, Drusilla got her knight, brave and true, inasmuch as a vampire can be one; from a vampire’s point of view, killing a slayer could indeed be akin to slaying a great beast, except for the part where they themselves are the beasts to be slain (from a human perspective, at least). And Spike really did get a grand romance with Dru (until it ended), though it involved perhaps more pain and death than he had anticipated. They are in many ways a dark, grim old fairy tale couple.
528: First time I’ve ever wished for a disney version.
I watched this episode tonight, and I must say, I’m not sure if I was in just the right mood or what, but I don’t think I’ve ever shipped anything on the Orville quite this much before. Like, I find Claire and Isaac and Ed and the Krill lady intriguing, and I root for Ed and Kelly, but none of them give me quite this many feels.
I mean, it was clear from the start that this was going to be a tragic ship, and in a way perhaps it was that underpinning of inevitable tragedy that made it so beautiful. But like... it was so sweet and moving and I felt so much for Gordon. I wanted it to last even though it obviously couldn’t; I wanted them to be happy.
Now I want them to develop time travel for real so he can go back and meet the real Laura, not just the computer-synthesized version of her. Perhaps this is the perfect time for a Doctor Who crossover AU...

My gosh this is super fun. I went and looked up Rex Velvet, too, and his videos are hilarious. Like you said, he doesn’t seem to have done anything truly villainous, at least not in an illegal sense, but he seems to have distributed these “Superheroes not welcome” posters. It’s interesting that he seems to be pro-police, actually, so he’s not nessecarily promoting villainy, just denouncing vigilantism (and brandishing weapons in a vaguely threatening manner, but other than that).
But yeah, the videos turn out to be sketches more than anything, but it’s still really fun. It’s hilarious how he keeps calling Phoenix Jones and crew nerds when he appears to be out-nerding them by leaps and bounds. I mean, he’s sitting there straight up drinking Firewhiskey, and apparently he has a DeLorean? He’s a ridiculous nerd and I love him, even if I don’t nessecarily agree with his anti-vigilante stance. (I mean, there’s pros and cons. We can discuss the legal/functional implications of vigilantism another time.) Anyways he’s also thrown a super swag villain party and he has cat-minions, so.
(This is his intro video with the firewhiskey, his anti-Phoenix Jones premise, and his vaguely threatening weapon brandishing. This one introduces his anti-superhero poster campaign, also featuring the DeLorean. Here is the sketch with his totally not photoshopped cat minions (that might be spoilers, sorry), which is probably the funniest of all of these, and here is his villain party, with some villains who are more swag than certain others.)
Also there were links in the comments section of the first video to more articles about Phoenix. I started reading this interview and it was quite interesting--it explains how he chose his name, for example: “Phoenix is my son's name, and Jones is the most common last name in America, so I did it for my son and for the common person.” But then I got distracted by Rex’s nerd-swag villainy and I didn’t finish reading the article. Phoenix seems really cool, too, though.
Washington State (not DC) is the only state in the union where you can legally have a fistfight with somebody (with police as referees) to settle your differences
Me, believing every word of this: Wow, this is fascinating!
Me, who knows almost nothing about music: I wonder what a high C sounds like. Maybe I should look up songs in the key of high C so I can hear--
Me, finally getting it: Oh... Oh. Ooooooh! Ha.
Me, a little disappointed: So... none of that was real then. But... but... pirate shanties...
Me, still not sure how music works: But I still want to know what the key of high C sounds like, though.
hey did anyone hear the news that scientists have actually been able to figure out the most common key that old pirate shanties were sang in
I was just rereading the Beatrice Letters and I must say, taken out of context especially, some of Mr. Snicket’s love poetry is really dark and intense.
Also, as a southerner,
is similarly ominous.
I just remembered that I submitted things to this page years ago, long before I had a tumblr, and a couple of them got published. Now that I do have a tumblr I thought I might as well share a thing to which I contributed :)
I should note that I did write this one back before I saw the 50th anniversary special, though that was still not quite aaaall the epic Time War drama I was hoping for. Also, someone in the notes has pointed out that the Big Finish audios go more into it, and I have really been wanting to get into those more for a while. I should put them on my Christmas list.
Actually, now I’d say it’s not specifically that I want more about the Time War anymore. I just want more Gallifrey in general. Like, I know the Doctor left because he found it stuffy and boring and whatnot (or because he was afraid, according to 12, but I imagine it was some combination thereof), but I want more backstory on his childhood and his school days, and more emotional drama with his family (who are apparently no longer disapparated from existence, so he should have to deal with them) and old friends (especially the Master, but other ones, too). There’s just so much emotional tension for the Doctor to deal with on Gallifrey!
I should really go back to those Doctor’s childhood fics I was writing. I even came up with my own longform version of the Doctor’s original Gallifreyan name--his real one, not his school nickname. Remind me to tell you about it some time; I was starting to write it here but then I realized this post was long enough and my naming of the Doctor is going to take a whole long post of its own to explain.
Okay, so I'm finally catching up on Dracula Daily (I got like a month behind somehow, which I know sort of defeats the "daily" of it, but I'm working on it) and anyways I'm just now reading Jonathan's June 29 entry, and--
"The last I saw of Count Dracula was his kissing his hand to me"
Did Dracula just blow our boy Jonathan a kiss??
I suppose it's likely some other old-fashioned gesture that I'm not familiar with, but then again, it could well be the blowing-you-a-kiss gesture in a mocking way ("with a red light of triumph in his eyes, and with a smile that Judas in hell might be proud of." I do love that description.) I feel like there's something I might be missing here but right now I'm definitely picturing Dracula blowing Jonathan a wicked little kiss.
It has occurred to me that Gerard Way and Rivers Cuomo both play D&D and I've begun assembling my dream rock star D&D party in my mind... What other rockers play D&D?
And also like... they played My Name is Jonas together that one time. They know each other, at least kind of. Do you think they *have* played D&D together?
Imagine if they did a D&D stream together. That's something I'd pay to see.
It’s a weird time for me fandom-wise. Normally, the way I cycle through obsessions, I’d be fading out on Gotham in favor of A Series of Unfortunate Events, because that’s kind of just how I process things, cycling from one fandom into another, and then back around again after taking a break for a while. But now Gotham is coming back, and both because I’m on tumblr now and because it’s exciting and rare for me to be current on a show I’ll want to keep up with it, especially since this is the final season, even though I was getting a little burned out on my obsession with it. But also, I’m in rehearsals for a play right now (which I need to leave for soon) and so I’ll be missing it live tonight (and for all of January) and I’ll have to stay off tumblr tonight until I can see it on hulu tomorrow--probably not until after rehearsal again, actually. Also I was going to try to put out a season 3 inspired Nygmobblepot fanmix before Gotham came back but that’s not getting done in the next 5 minutes so I suppose it’ll just have to come out this weekend amidst the rush on season 5 premiere stuff. Also I got a Doctor Who audio drama for Christmas and I’ve been listening to that in the car on the way to and from work, so it’s like I’m actively consuming things from 3 of my fandoms all at once, which is probably not that strange for most people, but which is rather strange for me given the way in which I obsess over things.
tl;dr--I’m going to try and put up a Nygmobblepot fanmix I’ve been working on this weekend, but because of play rehearsal I won’t be able to watch Gotham live on TV this month so I’ll be watching a day behind on hulu and avoiding tumblr in the space inbetween.
The more I think about Victorian Christmas traditions and Spike, the more I wonder whether this may’ve been a Christmas party. It probably isn’t, given the lack of Christmas decorations, and I suppose there are plenty of other occasions for which Victorians might throw a party, but I still enjoyed the thought of it being one as I imagined it yesterday. (Also, even if it isn’t one, I’m quite sure Mr. William Pratt would’ve also gone to Christmas parties, and they probably would’ve looked a lot like this but perhaps with a few more pine boughs and red ribbons.)
I also recently discovered this podcast from the Weird Christmas blog, which has fit well with the cravings for Victorian Christmas traditions Spike's awakened in me. I already talked about Spike and Christmas ghost stories, in this post and a bit more in my tags on my reblogs of that podcast on blagueofchaos, but another thing mentioned in that podcast was Victorians playing hide and go seek at a Christmas party. I would just like you to join me in imagining sweet little William the Bloody playing hide and go seek at a fancy Victorian high society Christmas party.
I just... I really love pre-turn Spike and thinking about him and Victorian-ness and Christmas things.

I love how soft and whimsical this art is; it feels subtle and minimalistic and yet still very pretty. It’s like something out of a story book, and it captures the aesthetic mood of daydreaming. Lovely :)
Also I still haven’t seen 13 yet but now I own her coat since I dressed as her for Halloween and it’s very fun to swish around in her long flowy coat :) Definitely putting her season on my Christmas list.
