Maríanne was performing on the streets in Illinois (possibly Springfield). Her old gang members had been tracking her and finally found her. She and her friend tried to run from them when they caught her (she regrets dragging him into this because he got hurt), they got separated during the chase…

Atlas, Mordecai, and Viktor were coming from a business meeting and were heading back to Lackadaisy. Here’s what happens next:

They remind her of her life on the road, when she lived back in New York, and her childhood!

…Well they only remind her of the good parts, at least.
