if parks and rec was still being made they’d do a bit where ron swanson has to wear a pronouns name tag and it’d just be “???/???” And it’d cut to a talking head of him going

Racetrack (to me) doesn't really care about gender. He 'dated' a few girls when he was younger, but none of their parents liked them dating an orphan newsie. He liked one of the older boys at the lodging house when he first got there, but the guy aged out and Race never said anything. Race loves to love, regardless of gender.
Spot had never liked anyone before he met Race. He didn't have time, nor did anyone really catch his eye. That is- until he and Racetrack were first introduced. He thought he was dying, with how he heart would beat and his stomach would ache, but after talking about it with Hotshot he eventually figured it out. He isn't used to caring for people like this, but he likes learning when it comes to Race.
If I had to say it in modern terms I would say Racetrack is pansexual and Spot is demiromantic/demisexual and gay.

For me, spot is Irish. His family immigrated when he was about 6. He left home when he was about 9 and became a newsie pretty soon after. Every Brooklyn newsies has a different story on why he’s called Spot.
Race is also Irish. He was born in America, but both his bio parents were Irish. His dad was never in the picture, and his mother died shortly after birth. He was taken in by a well-to-do Italian family that gave him his name. (He kept the last name of his bio parents to honor them). He became a newsie at about 8, but still would go home to the Italian family. He completely moved out to fully become a newsie a few months later.
At the time of the strike Spot is 14 & Racetrack is 15.
modern Crutchie made it his mission to appear in every club photo at his high school. he totally succeeded, but when administration found out they made him go to all the club meetings

To add onto my b-boy au here's some other random things:
They're all high school/college age and live in New York City.
Jojo is nonbinary and uses they/any pronouns.
Katherine stays an amateur reporter, she interviews the troupe for an article on city culture and quickly falls in with them as a friend group.
Crutchie and Jack are brothers, Crutchie works at a corner store and *totally doesn't* sneak the guys free snacks.
Les and Sarah hang out with them sometimes! the guys all love when they come along
Brooklyn is also a dance troupe, but i imagine they're all also skateboarders and have adventures akin to those in the show Betty
And as in generally all my stuff Medda is Races guardian, Denton is Jack and Crutchie's foster dad, and sprace & specs x katherine are in some way together/ get together

I don't have links sadly but I believe she was supposed to be Spot's mother, but that storyline was scraped. She still stands as a way to point out the struggles of the newsies and how hard their situation really was despite the happier tone of the song :)

Newsies b-boy au no one asked for!!!!
Jack: manager and leader of the manhattan troupe. Not a great dancer personally but gets them lots of publicity with his charismatic attitude. All the boys love him, and he’s very knowledgeable about dance styles. The visionary between him and dave
Davey: manager and leader of manhattan. Classically trained pianist, likes to improv music for the troupe. Helps the boys break down their choreography, in charge of logistics.
Race: trained in dance, extremely skilled in all areas and loves incorporating different styles into his dance. Fantastic toprock. All around very skilled and impressive
Specs: choreo mastermind. Great combos. Former gymnast and makes sure you can tell. Practically the dance captain. FIRE downrock
Albert: very bold dancer!! Always experimenting and trying new things. Seems he may be less dedicated, but he just likes to appear chill. Newer to dance, self taught. Awesome power moves
Jojo: very energetic!! They’re always up to have fun but also down to get serious with it. Lots of spins and total power head
Mush: expert freezes. A little distracted from dancing by his boyfriend but it’s probably fine. He looks so cool at all times
Buttons: very fancy footwork. Somehow knows all the moves, unofficial dance encyclopedia
my newsies thought of the day (among many others) is that tommy boy will find a joke hilarious and in response go "wow you're killing me" in a very monotone voice (race freaks out and tb busts out laughing. he thinks he's the funniest guy)

This song is so him to me. (I'm a huge sprace shipper so that's gonna be in here too a bit, but only if you’re really looking) Let me explain:

Spot tends to act very cold and calculating to everyone he meets. It's how he got so high up in newsie society, it's why he is so respected. So yes it is necessary (or at least he deems it to be), but it means he doesn’t really get close to people.

Not only that he doesnt get close to people, he’s not even sure he knows how. He knows he cares like hell, but he's not quite sure how to show that to other people.

Pretty self explanatory I feel. Spot is real ambitious.

This!!! This part is why I made this post!! He puts on such a facade!! He is used to people assuming he’s an asshole, hence “props to your conclusions”. He doesn't really know how to stop pretending, but does that really matter? He’s safer and more powerful this way.

He is a teenager in charge of hundreds of other young boys (and girls). Don't be fooled by the mask he dons, he is fighting for his life like the rest of them. He doubts himself. Personally I headcanon him to be about 14, which is an especially vulnerable age to be, particularly for a young boy with no parental figures. For cryin’ out loud he is insecure!! He has the world (ha ha) on his sholders. I love him and you should too and this song fits him so well
